Let me warn you, this review will not do this book justice nor will it really tell you what the book is like because I don’t want to even tempt you with spoilers. Simply go into this book knowing that it is intense and lovely and completely beguiling. Think Practical Magic with more intrigue and less witches. I was charmed and deceived and bewitched and mislead at every possible turn. This one comes for your life.
I absolutely love the main relationship in this book. I love where it began, where it went, and where it ended. They both went into the ✨entanglement✨ with false pretenses and ulterior motives. I loved that they were equal in their deceit but also completely unable to keep their hands off each other. Once they fell, they fell hard (and into bed). Since they started their relationship on half-truths and mutual deception, there was a glorious point where they realized fighting was futile so they might as well be kissing.
As for the steam, the level was pretty much perfect for me. There were multiple spicy moments and they added to character and plot development but didn't oversaturate the narrative. We even got some action at the end (the holy grail honestly)!
I found both characters to have such depth to their stories and interactions. That scene where James answered the question in her eyes? I choked! “I know what it is to have you in my life. I know what it is to have you walk out of it. I will do whatever I must to see that you don’t walk out of it again.” Out of context this may not be the most moving quote but when I read it I had to take a moment for myself.
The third act breakup was more of a third act unraveling of secrets and schemes. As soon as one bomb was dropped, another table was turned. I’m pretty sure this book gave me trust issues. I was excited for it all to shake out rather than daunted by the prospect of unnecessary trifles. The last chapter was everything I crave in a last chapter. Their intimacy was delicious and so sweet. There was also a secondary romance that warmed my heart.
This was definitely not a light read though. It was a romance, a drama, and a mystery. There was death and grief and each character had ghosts that came back to haunt. It made me cry multiple times but thankfully at the end they were happy tears. I was thoroughly ravished by everything that this book was.
