It's actually a combination of newspaper and book clippings from vintage sources, many of which are either recipes, crafts, or little knowledge tidbits. It's a unique approach and one I found intriguing enough that, after ordering it from the library, I went and ordered my own copy!...more

From there the author touches on a few other important topics like the effects (or lack thereof) of certain foods/food groups on babies and breastmilk, the need for exercise (and the levels at which the nursing mother should ease back into it), and useful tips for the busy mother to plan meals for her and her family.
I felt that the author overreached a little bit towards the end when she started going in to feeding children, the effects of television on children, and other similar topics. Her research did not seem as sound and they were completely off-topic for this book. The author also makes the mild assumption that there will be lots of people on hand to help. As a mother that does not have a huge local support network, I found some of her suggestions to be non-viable for my lifestyle. I also felt like the author pump-shamed a bit and, as a large-breasted mother whose child could not latch and therefore mainly a pump user, this really discouraged me.
All in all the book has some good suggestions and has specialized topic points for mothers of multiples, mothers who gave birth via cesarean, and other such subgroups within the overall group of "new mothers". But if you've done some general reading on fitness and don't fall into the above subgroups, there's a very good chance that the information on a nursing mother's caloric needs and the effect/non-effect of food on babies and breastmilk is about all you'll really need....more

This boThere are about a half-dozen food allergies in my family and most of them only apply to one or two people out of four to six that we cook for. This book had several easy, healthy recipes that the whole family could eat, several that could be eaten by most of us, and a few that could be used with only minor modifications. I borrowed it from the library but I plan on copying over the recipes for myself and seeing if the family likes them!...more

My family tried a few and the most notably off-key was the "Gus' Mac and Cheeseburger". It may have been family taste but the mustard was overpowering and the beef-to-noodle ration was too light on the meat for the flavor of the ground beef to impact the recipe.
With a few alteration suggestions from parents, however, this book could be a very cute addition to a child's cookbook collection. The recipes are rated on a crown system running one crown for the easiest to five for the hardest, and the instructions are easy to read with very clear photos for each dish's final appearance. ...more

I felt that this book was a bit anti-tech, which I find to be a damaging position for libraries to hold. I could go into the rant about how technology can improve the reading experience, but I won't. Suffice to say that I enjoyed the basic story of the book and the tempting idea of a librarian turning into a dragon when angered, but I don't like the message it seems to send kids: that technology and reading don't sit well together....more

The big exception to that was the idea that every time you buy food, you're trading money for energy. So if you buy a food that doesn't give you nutrients and energy in exchange for your money, you're wasting your grocery budget.
That idea really got me back on track in terms of examining what we buy when we grocery shop. But other than that, I'd suggest doing some Google searches to find all the same information in more concise of situation-specific formats....more
