My family is lucky enough to have a back yard that we can let our toddler explore. And with a book like this, that small yard has become a much more magical place.
I'm a big fan of Avery's writing and this book is a great example as to why. She doesn't use a simple rhythm in her writing which means I have to be on my toes when I read it out loud to my son. This keeps him more engaged as well so he ends up understanding more of the story. In the case of this book Avery talks about all the magical things that can be found outside (like tiny communities of animals high in the trees and low to the ground). I know my son and I can already tell that he's going to be exploring high and low in our yard as soon as I read this to him tomorrow.
It's an adorable book with absolutely gorgeous watercolor illustrations. And, as with any of Avery's books, I strongly recommend it to anyone who plans on reading to little ones!

They are some of my best friends and were my greatest comfort in very dark times. So you can imagine the appeal of a book that is alive. Of course you have to use your imagination a bit but then that's what brings every book to life. This book just happens to make the point directly and all on its own a fair bit of friendly sass thrown in for good measure.
Needless to say I am so glad I added this book to my child's library. And, honestly, my own. Justine Avery is as imaginative as ever and Daria Yudina poured so much magical whimsy into the illustrations and styling that it's just as pretty to simply look at as it is fun to read. I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone who loves books or wants their kids to love books!

"Baby Trolls Get a Bad Rap" was absolutely adorable. The art style was minimalist but still colorful and engaging for the target age group. And, as a whole, the book addresses the issue of representation in a way that little kids will understand. After all, why don't we see baby trolls? They must exist! So shouldn't we see at least a little bit about them?
The best part, in my opinion, was that Avery managed to present several different characters in such a short space. There are several different baby trolls making their case. It's a very subtle way of highlighting the way very different people can agree on important things and work together. It's a very subtle vehicle for the message and one that I am very, very happy to have in my son's library....more

The illustrations are very basic, as is the writing style. This is deliberate, as it lets the scientific ideas shine through and opens up a lot of space for caretakers to apply the lessons in games or songs or conversations once the book has been read.
Most kids are not going to actually grasp the concepts in these books. But the explanations really clarify things for the adults reading them, and that's a good start! I'm sure we've all heard how an airplane moves and nodded along as half the information went over our heads. But reading this book to my son solidified my understandings of the absolute basics. This helped untangle knots further up my chain of understanding.
And while this might not seem important in my day-to-day life, I'm raising a whole new person. He might be fascinated by rockets or planes or any other number of things that are affected by the concepts in this book. Now when he asks questions. I can answer them a little more clearly. And, in the end, everyone will be better off by a net increase in scientific understanding....more

The cadence can be a bit odd since the pages seem to rhyme sometimes but the rhythm isn't quite right. The message, of course, is that you don't have to enjoy Halloween by focusing on spooky things, but on the fun things like the harvest and time with friends.
These "mis-aged" issues aside, the illustrations are cute and it has a good point.
