...more

In the middle of this scenario the book begins and we follow the course of the tragic story with the help of the central character Zoey, who doesn’t only describe in the present how the world is destroyed, but also looks back to the time before the epidemic, before the war and before the downfall of humanity. This happens mostly within the different chapters and thus is marked with a small heading (Then/ Now), so that the read don’t lose the orientation between the varying times, although the flashbacks into the past are also not written in a chronologically order and this got me confused sometimes. I don‘t know, whether others had also this problem or not, but at the beginning I had a hard time to follow the plot and I would have found it better, if at least a date would have been written at the flashbacks, to get a better overview of the events.
At the beginning of the book is an absolute chaos, not only in the destroyed world, but also for me as a reader and a big question mark stood here first of all. To be honest, I needed some time and chapters to understand the first relations, to form connection and to recognize a red thread. Although this is the case, nevertheless it was a great reading, full of tensions and ‘guessing game’ and I couldn’t stay away from book, because I just had to know how it goes on what happens next to Zoey on her way.
As you can see, Zoey is a character with whom I felt and for whom I worried throughout the book, because though Zoey is strong, grimly and aim-oriented to protect herself and the people in her surroundings and to get her to her goal, BUT still she tries to remain human, not to kill other if it can be avoided, and in spite of all cruel circumstances, tries to offer friendliness and helpfulness. Which was amazing for me, because often I would have already giving up or have crept away in a cave, only by reading about the scenery and cruelty of some other people, because everything is simply so hopeless, desperate and somber. Moreover there are some scenes, which are really creepy and depressing and sad, so that sometimes I’ve just waited for some positive things, some small glimmers of hope.
Beside the plot and the great central figure, the writing manner of Adam was just wonderful and for me also like an own poetry. She has described everything very visually, put imagines in the reader’s head to grab Zoe’s feelings and to empathize, to feel and to see everything, as if the reader is a part of the story. In my opinion this is partly good, but on the other side the book got too thick and the action thereby becomes also a little too slow, because of the detailed descriptions surroundings or the graphic representation and poetry of the sentences. I think that is a personal preference and some will find it great and others won’t like it at all. I can’t choice between one of these two fractions, because I’m right in the middle, because I’ve loved her writing but also would have liked a little bit more actions and events and less descriptions.
Luckily for me, after all the sad things and strain, the end could again completely satisfy me and I was able to finish the book also with a good feeling. Otherwise I would have been – to tell the truth – a little bit mad. Because for what else we do everything in life and risk all, endure all adversities and hang on – just for love – and I think that is one of the basic messages of this book. And that in spite of everything, each of us is still able to decide how we care about others and whether we show humanity and cooperativeness, even if we receive none anymore ourselves.
I’ve no idea why it took me so long to read this, but maybe I wasn’t in the right mood. But when I finally started it, the book has really fitted perfect.
The entrance was in the middle of the events when the main character Cali wants to be accepted in the most exclusive BDSM club of the town. – After a failed 22-year-old marriage, two adult children and many years of frustration in the bed with her ex-husband, because of unspoken desires, fear and shame.
There she meets Jake, one of three club owners, and in further result she also falls in love. What begins with initial sex turns out to big feelings, of which they both haven’t dared to dream about any more. Of course it is more complicated during the story than this short summary and it includes some interesting twist and up-and downs, but they didn’t appear exaggerated and unrealistically, but they could be totally from the real life, which I’ve liked very much. For example the problems with her children, who though are already grown-ups and out of the house, but can’t concede their mother a new relationship.
What has thrilled me here very much, were not only the erotic scenes – which I found really great and the reader were gently brought close to the subject of BDSM; always just a little more – but I also loved the rest. The figures were well worked out and seamed authentic to me, also real and charming with their pro- and also disadvantages, like everyone of us.. And Jake was simply a dreamlike lover – although he has long, black hair – which I usually don’t really like. ;)
But he was so empathetic and knew exactly what he had to do and where it was important, but he made himself worse than he was – the typical guy whom a woman has to save, so that he can find his true happiness. *sigh*
The only thing I would like to criticize is that it was almost too short for me and I would have liked more background information, and also the end came too fast. Here it would have been better if it had developed more slowly can develop and don’t run out so fast. But at least it goes on with the second part already this year and I’m already very happy about it!
I can recommend this book to everybody, who would like to make a first insight into erotic books with BDSM parts in it, or who loves adult ‘Contemporary Romance’ with erotic scenes. You won‘t regret it! To visit the Blog, click here: -> http://martinabookaholic.wordpress.co...

English Review: After the great first part which could persuades and inspire me completely, I just had to read the next part. And I’ve been glad abou English Review: After the great first part which could persuades and inspire me completely, I just had to read the next part. And I’ve been glad about the continuation, because there was a little cliffhanger at the end of the book ‘Water’. When I finally get my hands on ‘Air’ to start reading the book, I was a little disappointed, because it was different than I had expected.
To one side the plot starts some time after the events from part 1, but without much of important thing happened in the world or with the characters. What I find extremely odd, if one remember which relation Kaitlyn and Micah had almost at the end, before the thing with Shawn happened, and that Micah has saved her afterwards. After that you think that they would talk about it afterwards, or not? But Kaitlyn didn’t and she still couldn’t tell him or the others, that she is pregnant. And funnily enough she holds particularly to Micah an emotional, as well as a physical distance, which was never so big, as in this time.
Also Micah reveals only too little about him or he didn’t makes obvious steps toward Kaitlyn, what I found a great pity. And then suddenly there came the big revelation and from one second to the other, there also came the big, inexplicable turn in their love relationship; when the action all around Shawn and his bad underground organization tapers to a point and the quick and above all complete turnabout of the relationship of Micah and Kaitlyn takes place, which was for me too quickly and also a little illogical. For weeks there was no real conversation between the two main characters and suddenly Micah is a completely other person and devote all love to Kaitlyn, with all consequences and relations. And what is Kaitlyn doing? Of course not the right thing! And this happens not only in this situation, but also throughout the whole book and particularly at the end, I wanted to punch or shake her so long till she comes to her senses again. Unfortunately a reader can’t intervene in the events of books and thus I was left watching her decisions silently and despairing.
Of course in this part there aren’t only bad things between Micah and Kaitlyn, but there were also really some good, very romantic and crackling scenes of them, which could also score with eroticism. But nevertheless, I’ve not liked the end at all. I almost wanted to start crying or scream or smash something – which on the other side, however show here, that I was completely taken by the characters and that I’ve felt and suffered with them. And that characters not always act like we readers wishes for, is natural, because people also often don’t act like they should. Therefore you could say that the characters and the plot course were realistic and authentic; with people, which make mistakes, act illogically or aren’t perfect and learn from it – hopefully! ;)
What has disturbed me also, beside these points, was the fact that the middle section was to be read a little tenaciously. For me the part with Alex was too extended and drown-out, and in overall the second part couldn’t hold the same tension and speed, like ‘Water’.
As I’ve already mentioned, I’m not happy with the end of the second book at all, and the only bright spot is, that I hope and know, that the author will give us a positive and reasonable end after the fourth part – so, at least we still have two more books, for which we can looking forward to and I really hope sooo much, that after all the up and downs, we’ll get our deserved happy-ending!
Und was tut Kaitlyn?
(Man will ja dann doch nicht sonderlich auffallen ^^).
English Review: I’ve finished the book ‘Legend’ within two days and usually this is always a good sign, but here, I partially had my problems with it English Review: I’ve finished the book ‘Legend’ within two days and usually this is always a good sign, but here, I partially had my problems with it. In any case positively is to be mentioned, that the writing style is very easy to read and it goes on quick and casual, with a special easiness. This is probably due to the fact to that the story is written in the present and on the other hand that it is used a very simply language, without a lot of frills, descriptions or kitsch, what also fits to the whole elitist system, which is described in the book.
However, to tell the truth, the plot and also the characters here didn’t completely knocked my socks off, but it was also at the same time no disappointment, but rather just quite average. The plot is thrilling and also dramatically written, so that I wanted to read on fast. But it seemed to me in between that as if I’ve waited for something certain to happen, but unfortunately it never really came. Particularly with the first third of the book I had this feeling, when also the action got on just slowly. But then the last pages have virtually overturned with action and more action and everything happened here too quickly for me till to the end.
What also stroked me considering the plot was, that for me it wasn’t a real dystopia, but it rather appeared like a book about war, like a story, which has happened during the second world war with the Nazis and the totalitarian, pitiless system – only that here some modern elements were inserted, to be able to let it play in the future and to be able to declare it as a dystopia for the right marketing. Also this selection of the children and these researches, sounded very much like something that already happened in those times and hence, I found these points not very original. But only terrifyingly; like it probably also should be appear.
Now to the central figures in the story: Day and June. The male protagonist Day is quite okay, but I don’t always understand completely his actions or the reason for his past doings, which always were mentioned only briefly or I don’t understand, why he is the most searched criminal of this republic. For me it looks a little too exaggerated, that he should be the ‘#1 enemy of the state’, only because he has committed little things like little raids or smaller sabotages, but up to now he has never made really big damages or killed somebody. So why should this big, strong regime, like this republic here, care for such a prowler and places so much value for his arrest? Otherwise Day was a nice and also attractive character, of whom I liked to get to know more about and I hope, that we still get more from in the next parts.
Also June was likeable to me, but I couldn’t understand, how she should be one of the best agents, the most intelligent person and already got her degree – at the age of just 15 years? Again it seemed to me too exaggerated and phony.
Moreover I unfortunately couldn’t build up a strong connection to Day or June and for my taste they have fallen in love with each other too fast. I mean – these two were drilled their whole life to hate each other and already after two days they’ve spend time together on the street, they have to kiss each other, because they can’t stop themselves? Ohm, hello – have I missed there something? Okay, they were sweet and everything and have also suffered and must endure many pains, but nevertheless, I missed the special spark for them.
*phantastisch*
English Review: For this book I’ve got high expectations, because I’m a huge fan of Jones’ adult series ‘Charley Davidson’ and hence, I’ve been very glad about this new series here. Unfortunately, it couldn’t keep up with my big hopes. I was aware beforehand that this one will be a Young Adult book and therefore it’ll have some big difference to the other books, but however, it was more different than I had expected.
First of all I found some occurrences in the book full of cliché and stereotyped, with this dark, foreign, sexy boy, who is immediately interested in the main protagonist Lorelei, even though she doesn’t look especially beautiful, or that at the moment of their first meeting she would have said something great/ funny/ special to him, which would have caught his attention. Nope – but still he was only focused on her. *sure* And situation I’ve already got this too often and read it in too many other books and hence, I’m disappointed in Jones, because she has also taken this way and I’ve wished for more creativity from her.
As well as in the other book series of her, there are supernatural occurrences and beings in the book, only not a reaper or such, but other things. I won’t tell you much about it, because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but the solution at the end, which is presented and clears up everything, wasn’t my taste and I don’t really liked it. It was too outlandish for me – and concerning fantasy, I’m usually quite open-minded. So actually I really love fantasy and supernatural elements, but here this was even for me too overstrung and simply too much in all, so that it seemed fulsome and fake.
I had also my problems with the characters and wasn’t such a great fan of them as for example of Charley or Reyes, from Jones’ adult series. Partial they appeared like an imitation of them, but only trimmed to teenagers and Jones has reached a little bit too deep in the box of ‘stupid jokes and imbroglios‘. Though Lorelei was quite okay and I also could get along with the other characters, but unfortunately not more than this, and sometimes also here, I had to roll with my eyes irritated. I noticed here, that Jones tried to write juvenile for teenagers and, hence, it was too volitional for me and not authentic.
Unfortunately, this was not a book for me, after the great Charley Davidson world and I don’t know, if Jones just should stay at what she can – namely to write erotic, amusing and exciting adult books, instead of distinguishing herself also in the Young Adult genre. For me this attempt hasn’t really worked. Nevertheless I give still rate the book with three points for the quick and rapid reading, which the book has to offer. At this moment I’m not sure, whether I’ll track this series in the future or not, that remains to be seen. For more Info visit my Blog: http://martinabookaholic.wordpress.co......more
English Review: How can one love parts of a book and doesn’t understand some other parts of it or shakes the head frustrated in disbelieve? Here with English Review: How can one love parts of a book and doesn’t understand some other parts of it or shakes the head frustrated in disbelieve? Here with this book it actually functions quite well, what is also probably due to the fact that it is relatively thick and sometimes the story goes in circles.
But back to the beginning, where honestly at first I’ve thought this story is a YA book version of the movie ‘Fight Club’, when Abby and Travis meet each other at this underground fight and hence my motivation was low. But already after one or two chapters I was totally involved in this story and the characters that I couldn’t stop to read any more, and if I’ve not read, then I thought all the time of them or dreamt about it.
After the false ‘Fight Club’ mistake, the story reminded me a little of the book ‘The Perfect Chemistry’ by Elkeles, but here it’s not a YA book, but for adults or older teenagers (approx. up from 17 years), because there’s sex in the book, but not described very detailed, so that I couldn’t only clarify it as an adult’s book – so you see, the erotic scenes remains within the scope. Moreover there were integrated really sweet elements, as for example the nickname ‘Pidge’ (from Pidgeon), which the Travis has chosen for Abby as a cute nickname.
What has reminded me so much of ‘Perfect Chemistry’ was this bad-guy type and his involvement with the ‘girl-next door’. Also here were included many stereotypes and things which usually disturb me or let my head shake, but here it wasn’t the case at all. It was a really nice, sweet story, which holds me prisoner and in which I could only wish the two protagonists best luck from the first up to the last page, and I hoped for them.
Of course the story isn’t perfect, for example the fact that some students in it were constantly smoking or that women partly got stereotypically stamped if they jump into bed with different guys, while the men aren’t got entitled as such, but were admired as ‚lady-killers’.
The same thing is also for the characters. I really like Travis and he has the certain something, which doesn’t let me go anymore and that I simply hoped for him. But he really could use a certain training against his aggressions and his constant mood changes – in the story he even appears sometimes like somebody that has a manic-depressive illness (described exaggerated, but still ^^). And also the perfect Abby has her negative sides, for example that she runs away from problems and to big emotions, instead of rather to confront it and with that she could have made it easier for herself and also for Travis and the reader, instead of breaking everyone’s heart over and over again – even mine. But in some way I think that exactly this mix of ‘not being perfect’ is the real charm in this book, that one never knows what will happen next and whether they get their happy end or not.
Though this book is exciting and intensely told, but not primarily rich with actions, but by the impulsive characters and their interaction, their chemistry. It is partially like a carousel, a constant up and down of emotions and a trip which goes from ‘sky-high jubilating’ to ‘endlessly depressed’ and back again.
Who is able to want to get into this rollercoaster, has here – besides some tears – also wonderful pages and experiences in view, with dramatic feelings and emotions, which know how to inspire.
But now shortly to a point, which I would also like to criticize: It was a little toughening in the middle part, and there came the point where I asked myself what there’s still to come. But the author has once again thought up something to bring in even more tortures and pain, which though some readers may find more exciting, but for me it was a little bit too unnatural. I think the book wouldn’t have needed this ‘problem’ anymore and therefore it could also have been a little shorter and I still would have been happy with it.
In favor the end was totally my taste and I can say with joy that I’ve not regretted to read this fabulous book. It was an emotional rollercoaster, a lovely journey, which I would make again any time.

English Review: First of all – the cover is absolutely beautiful and it partially also shows greatly the contents of this underwater town. I’ve been English Review: First of all – the cover is absolutely beautiful and it partially also shows greatly the contents of this underwater town. I’ve been totally glad when I’ve got the book and also after the first shock, I’ve liked it really much. Why a shock? The first pages were written very easy, the statements and thoughts of the central figure Evelin, or briefly called Evie, were childish and very irritating, because they sounded like rehearsed texts and they’ve also confused me, to be honest. I already thought ‚oh no’ – what is this for a weird person and the book probably won’t be right for me. Moreover I had the feeling to be stucked in the movie ‘Groundhog Day’ and I was already expecting the worst.
But there I have judged a little too rash, because Evie has entirely changed and transformed and then her ‚true-self’ appeared and there is also a reason for her first weird behavior and thinking, which got explained and solved throughout the story.
Of course at this point you ask yourself what has happened to start this abrupt change, in a society which lives completely isolated and self-sufficiently in a built world below in the sea – in the so-called ‘Elysium’. The people of Elysium fled from the war, which has ruled some decades before on the surface, to live in this refuge and come to peace. Of course they are ready to do everything for this peace and for the protection of their town in the deep ocean, some more than others. Particularly ‚mother’ – the leader in Elysium – has prescribed her life for this town and for the backup of the future. Evie is her adopted daughter and therefore she is trained in all to become the next leader in the Elysium.
But her destiny changes, after a surface dweller succeeds in breaking into Elysium. He gets arrested by the guards and now Evie should try to receive special answers from him. How did he find them? How did he get in? Whether there are even more, which will follow? etc. But Gavin – this is his name – doesn’t let himself get into this questioning so easily and involves Evie in a questions–answers-play and with that he not only lures her slowly from her reserve and win her for himself – but also the readers and above all me :)
I also liked Evie, because she’s a figure which can also sort things out and stands up for herself and for other people or important values. I found that great – no matter which consequences she may gather from it. But Gavin, Gavin, was simply great! Slowly I’ve fallen in love with him together with Evie more and more, also although he had bright hair and I have pictured him at first dark-haired. He is the typical warrior, with a gentle side and a bright mind. He only could have had quietly some more rough edges, but I think, we will see them in the next part.
Otherwise, according to other characters in the book, it was quite thin. Primarily it was about these two figures, or also about ‘mother’, the remaining ones were just minor characters and thus they also appear neutral in the action.
There we would be at the story of the book, which has increased greatly, with a slow entrance – to describe the situation in Elysium – with growing tension, which tapers almost at the end to the final highlight. Sometimes it was a little bit nerve-wracking for me and particularly the second part – at the end – it was also a little fierce. So the also appears blood – a lot of blood – dangerously, also terrible scenes for the head cinema and though here it hasn’t disturbed me, I even found it super-duper. But I think that the recommended age for the book is too young with 13-17 years, and I think it should be raised to 15+.
I have liked the end very well and I was glad about how it has gone out. For me it was a ‘true end’ and if you ask me, this book also wouldn’t need a second part, but could also stand alone. It even would be refreshing to read once again an independent stand-alone book in the fantasy/ YA book genre. But of course a few threads and questions stay open and point to another, second part and I’m curious on the further ideas, Souders still has to offer here.
