Beautiful prose, as expected of Edith Wharton, but not my favourite of her works. 'The House of Mirth' tells the violent fall from social grace of Lily Bart, a woman brought up to be ornamental. She is trapped within her upbringing and she wants desperately to escape it yet, as opportunities arise for her to do just that, she wants equally as desperately to stay within the lifestyle that confines her.
This novel is lovely and extremely well written but travels a path of great tragedy which makes it difficult to read with an ending that leaves one unsatisfied and empty. I would still recommend this novel with a fair warning that it is a true drama. ...more

Excellent novel! I fell in love with the well-rounded characters and their lives from the very beginning--particularly that of Newland Archer, who is Excellent novel! I fell in love with the well-rounded characters and their lives from the very beginning--particularly that of Newland Archer, who is a character one can so easily relate to, that I found myself hoping for his happiness simply because I saw so much of myself in him.
