I personally found the writing a little flat sometimes, and it reminded me of how Tony Stark can be teeth-grittingly obnoxious - without the charm Robert Downey Jnr brings to the role, liking or empathising with the billionaire playboy can be difficult.

With the Gervase Fen series, the solving of the plot is not really the point - it's the apposite quotations, the well-turned phrases and, in this case, the cast of bucolic grotesques that delight. Though this book may have overdone the humorous set-pieces - it did feel sometimes like the cast of Carry On would come scampering over the brow of the hill at any point. Also the casual racism can be jarring; it was written in 1977....more
