We can’t afford to simply go along with the flow of life, because nothing in this world has been created, built, or set up in our favor. If we want something, we have to push back against everything around us and take it by force.” In a world where gender means your future, where it decides your fate, your position and your right to live and die, to be sacrificed or torn to pieces by cruelty of patriarchy, insert alien invasion that lasts for a long long time. Battles have been fought, battles have been lost and yet the war is nowhere near over. Hunduns, the alien race, versus humanity that is bound strictly by their rules with out goal in mind: how to motive their male population to fight by sacrificing women and girls who have no other choice but to fuel their Chrysalis units and die if they are unlucky. Yes, perfect matches exist. Yes, one could survive if their spirit is strong enough. But where is the breaking point? Is the breaking point once the pilots run out of women? No. It's when an anomaly shows itself in form of a woman who managed to kill a man in revenge, defying all odds that the man should have had killed her via mind link. So, how do you get rid of that particular problem? Get the man killer, Wu Zetian - now The Iron Widow - to pilot with the Iron Demon, Li Shimin, who is a kin slayer, family slayer and an eyesore who cannot be killed, because he is strongest pilot of them all. Too bad. I am exactly the kind of ice-blooded, rotten-hearted girl he fears I am. And I am fine with that. Let's not forget the childhood friend/love interest whom Wu Zetian ditched over revenge (i must admit it was very sexy of her) and his beautiful rich mind and connections. There are plenty of witty dialogues, fun dialogues, amusing sentences and highly fun narrative, but sometimes some actions of the characters seemed to happen out of blue, for example… li shimin and yizhi's attraction to each other, while i can count on hand how many interactions they had together. Wu Zetian herself had some very drastic behavioral changes, which sometimes flowed well in storyline, and sometimes didn't. Example: being super resolved to do something, then ending up being a mess right after, and right next second stealing herself again and doing a Thing. Li Shimin was the most interesting character for me, but there is always the fact that i love troubled characters and yet i can say i wholeheartedly enjoyed this couple of murder husband and wife. There is a lot about him that you should find on your own, and i shall not ruin the fun. Gao Yizhi was okayish, wish there were more scenes with him, and more spotlights, at this point he was just there to be there and to set the love triangle to stone. Yes. This is fully functional love triangle polyamory. If this is not your thing, do not read. I really hope he shines more in the second book! Lastly, there are many triggering things in this book, and those unfamiliar with some Chinese customs might find it hard to comprehend or even imagine what pain women had to go through to get their fit bound, or the way their social relationships worked. And of course, if you have any knowledge of Chinese historical figures you will see plenty of people you already know. Zhuge Liang, Qin Zheng for example... Xiran Jay Zhao is extremely fun person to hear and listen to and i have been following them on Twitter for a long time and i still have to say; they delivered. Can't wait for the rest of the books. I am guessing author will become better with each book. I have read plenty of first person view books and i have a feeling that this might have been better as a third POV instead... I could also say that Wu Zetian is unreliable narrator and yet i have read books with much more influencing first person writing than this one, so i feel like there is a lot of room for improvement! ...more |

Although it might be hard to catch up with Cultivation method novels, Seven Seas actually helped with giving notes about terminology for easier reading. This was one of my introductions into Chinese novels in general long time ago, and ever since then I've been in hell. There is also adaptation and it did amazing job (I'm talking about animated version, the drama version changed a lot, but still stuck with the main plot). In short, read it. It will make you cry, it will make you laugh, but most importantly, I am certain you will love it and it will not be waste of time. It's slow burn, good romance and the characterization of all side characters is flawless. I was immensely invested in side characters and their stories and wished there were more. After reading afterword, it's 100% known that this is a long time ago prequel for Legend of the Sun Knight series, as it is about how the first 12 knights came to be. Although we have only 4 so far, epilogue that vaguely tells about the rest of them and artbook that shows info on the original knights. It's interesting how some things changed and some haven't. Silvie, or Sun, is in fact totally the Sun Knight they are trying to act in 38th/39th generation: graceful, elegant, will forgive everyone, smiles a lot, has long blond hair and blue eyes, and worships a god called Ohmygod, which is in fact a slime, but could actually be God of Light? And cold, unforgiving and vicious personality definitely resembles Judgment knights, and hostility & care towards the Sun Knight (or in this case Carol & Silvester's relationships). Anyway, entertaining books. Author said she will expand this series after she finishes LSK completely, which means after 39th generation books 2 and 3! So far, so far.... T_T I can't wait! ► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ 女武 1 (Female Warrior, #1) ◈ 女武 2 (Female Warrior, #2) ...more |

Alas this is old, and it is only a prologue to the main series (including second book too) and yet, no sequels have yet to be written. The only thing I do know, is that these books actually cover the first generation of the Holy Knights, even though it can be read as a stand alone series. They are too short though, but so far we have Sun, Judgment, Metal and Leaf knights (for those who have read the LSK, they will understand). Basically the story goes that the Holy King has 2 wives. The second wife, dubbed the "Warrior Queen" defeated army of demons and went to explore the world... In the current time, however, a bard called Silvester Uriah Nate, dubbed Sun, is a bard who needs to sing the Ballad of the Warrior Queen for three days whenever he enters the new city. After all, one of the ballads has a question directed at her, and he hopes that he will be able to find her. What he finds is a mysterious Red Cloak person, and they love listening to the ballad... Overall nice and short books! :D I can't wait for the main series, whenever it gets written... And ofc, i read the translated version at princerevolution who got permission from Yu Wo to translate her works until they get licensed. ► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ 女武 1 (Female Warrior, #1) ◈ 女武 2 (Female Warrior, #2) ...more |

In this area, you will probably never win against Captain.” Oh how i wish for more books in this series. There can never be enough of the 38th generation of the Twelve knights, and the 39th generation. But there was just something lacking - I wasn't that much attached to this generation as I was for the previous one. But overall, i still love those who were present in this book. Thankfully, Yu Wo said that this will be trilogy, but this book can be read as stand alone too. But it felt incomplete because it was not planned to be actual stand alone... Anyway, i loved the switching of the POVs, recalling the past events (see: how to make Adair into a obedient and loyal Sun's Vice Captain by throwing him down the cliff a lot of times) and the new characters were cute and loveable. ► STORY & CHARACTERS: Even though the 38th generation were absolutely close friends, this generation is more like a family, with Elaro being the eldest one (23) among Hungri, who is 17 and rest that are around 15. Basically Elaro is everyone's big brother, and Ludia is everyone's big sister! What was interesting and great was that we finally found out what happened to Awaitsun and the rest (more or less) but there is just this fact that Awaitsun and Alice are waaaaaaaay too busy to maintain their own pack of children. The relationship dynamic between the Storm (Shuis) and Leaf (Valica) knights, between Hungri and Elaro and others, but it mostly focused on these four this time around. Shuis is in a way insecure, because he feels estranged from his own family and he found a brother in Elaro, who is also a brother figure to Valica who is an orphan (just like Elaro) and therefore there is this unsaid hate between Valica and Shuis. As the previous generation of Sun and Judgment knight were, Elaro and Hungri keep each other in check, but this time it's the other way around. This time Elaro is the one who needs to keep rein over Hungri, so he doesn't go overboard with putting his feelings that get in the line of his duty. And finally, the plot happens in "that" period when Grisia and the rest have to go each 6 months. And then something unexpected happens... an undead appears! Overall, this was a fun volume, and I can't wait for more of it, honestly. So a bit of a note from what i gathered who is who... 1. Elaro Sun 2. Shuis Storm 3. Hungri Judgment 4. Valica Leaf 5. Snow Cloud 6. Youg Blaze (????) 7. Valkyrs Metal 8. Judge Earth 9. Absenplum Ice 10. Luke Hell 11. Leo Stone (????) 12. Fey Moon ► SHORT STORIES SECTION: I will inculde the fact that I also read the short stories, and Unbeatable and the short stories about Cloud and the stories of when they were all children were quite awesome. Also, I never expected for Cloud to have such a big trauma, and i believe that Cloud's drifting made him rest for a while, but also explained why he was always willing to say "yes" - because he was traumatized to the point of never saying "no" as a reply. Or how Metal's (view spoiler)[masochistic (hide spoiler)] tendencies came to be because he was so insecure he needed something else to keep him grounded. (Moon, however, might actually have been too immersed in helping him.) Or how poor Storm was so shy he couldn't even look at the girls, and Grisia helped him by making him do Sun's documents and then explaining what needs to be done... And how Grisia was chosen for the Sun Knight, Chasel Judgment's history, Aldrizzt and Neo's relationship and how they first met... I loved them all! ► OVERALL: I just can't wait for any news about this series additions. Even short stories would do, but I highty recommend this series. It does have it's flaws, but everything else makes up for it. But if you are looking for exceptional female lead or secondary character... you won't find them in these books. Only those who pass by in the volumes. But the humor, feels and story are worth it. EDIT 02/10/2017: Good to know that Yu Wo is working on the second book as she put some snippets from the first chapters of the second book! Final rating: 4.75/5 stars Final rating - for the whole series: 5/5 stars The Twelve Holy Knights remain unchanged through the generations.Final rating: 4.75/5 stars Final rating - for the whole series: 5/5 stars The Twelve Holy Knights remain unchanged through the generations. Everyone should read this series, it is so amazing that it reminded me that not all first person POVs are bad! This is a work of art! It is so hard to say goodbye to one of your favorite series... I am kidding, this monster of a series has one more novel that's about the next generation and bunch of side stories! And even 19 of them (or so?)! And yes, these books can be found on english, as the translation group got permission to translate from the auhtor, and yet I would be among the first to buy this series if it was ever liscenced! Anyway, it is always a hard task to make a character that was your narrator for a long time completely change, yet still be the same old character who acts on his own previous instincts, memories and actions. This is a very hard task and i think it was done very well. Honestly, the beginning was a bit slow and well... not really captivating as all beginnings of the previous books but ever since a certain person appears - that Sun can't do anything without, aka (view spoiler)[Adair (hide spoiler)] - well, that's when things get absolutely more interesting. Considering this is the final volume of the stories of the 38th generation of the Holy Knights, I will talk about everyone in the character section. All of them were just amazing and I loved it. The only thing this series might lack is a constant female character, but there are many of them through the series, but sadly i disliked most of them. I believe my final favorites would be Pink, Scarlet and Alice. They weren't those weak and stupid stereotypes after all. More like scary and manipulative. Which is what I loved. Anyway, there were parts i bawled my eyes out, and laughed like a maniac. That's nothing new, honestly, when it comes to this series. ► STORY: *Spoilers for the previous volume, so skip this:* The Demon King has been born, and he is not planning on returning to the seat of the Sun Knight ever again! Which is very troublesome, because Grisia's real personality was actually just enough for him to tip over the edge of morality. First, he is terribly bored. So he goes out and randomly joins adventurer party and decides to make one of them a hero that will try to kill the Demon King, while pretending to be their companion. He just loves abusing Awaitsun (partly because he still holds grudge over him killing Leaf), and is highly doubting his loyalty. Not to mention Illu who is completely loyal to Roland, yet, Grisia managed to "convince" him to work for him while keeping Roland's wellbeing over his head. There is only one person, in the entire world, who might be able to keep him in check and he arrives just in time... But is he the person who will be able to help him go back to before, or will follow all of his commands? In the meantime, Lesus is having an army advance towards the Demon King. He will not let Grisia get away from his duties as a Sun Knight, because they are lost without him. ► CHARACTERS: There are like so many characters so let's do this: (actually non spoilery much) ◈ Grisia Sun: Even though he changed, a lot of him stayed in his subconsciousness. Even though he loves bullying his own knights, he would never allow another party to bully them instead. He is very protective, possessive and cruel in this book, but when you look at it, hasn't he always been this way? Just raise those traits and lower his kindness, consideration and thoughtfulness and you will see that he is... in a way, still the same, just balanced out. “Lesus, the first time I cast Resurrection, I lost my eyes, the Sun Knight’s blue eyes. The second time was the Sun Knight’s golden hair. The third time even my affinity for the holy element disappeared. What do you think the God of Light means?” ◈ Lesus Judgment: Still the cold on the outside, yet calculative, extremely caring, the actual big brother of the group, he does everything in his power to return their own leader to the Holy Knights. No matter what methods he or his subordinates may use, he will never relent in setting out what needs to be done. “But Sun is definitely not a weak and useless person! He chooses to take responsibility, and sometimes he even takes on too much. He uses everything in his power to prevent the people he cares about from getting hurt. But you, the Demon King, are a person who chooses to run away.” ◈ Ceo Storm: a workaholic who needs more rest than anything, yet is there for everyone and supporting as they go, he honestly just needs a damn break. Out of all the characters, Ceo is one of my favorites so far. Without him the whole Holly temple would collapse, honestly. ◈ Georgo Earth: even though he started on unfriendly terms with his own Captain, Grisia, he still wants him back, despite their arguments and their fall outs, he still cares about Sun. ◈ Elmairy Leaf: The kindest knight, both in his stereotypical personality and his real personality, he was constantly in grief over everything Sun has done for him and lost for him, and yet he is not able to help... ◈ Demos Cloud: an unknown support to many of them, he will come out from the shadow when you least expect it, yet you can still count on him to be there. ◈ Chikus Blaze: much like his steretypic personality, he is hot tempered and easy to lose his patience, but still great support in the times of need and is one who pretty much idolises the Sun Knight. ◈ Ecilan Ice: Even though he has to be emotionless a lot of time, it's possible to break through and see his own personality come out. There is nothing he cares about more than his own team, his brothers. And would suffer many things, just to make it right. Truly a mother of their team. ◈ Vival Moon: even though he has his own perks, he would help doing whatever it takes, no matter what. ◈ Laica Metal: who gets so happy when he finds out that he actually managed to offend someone without even trying (his teacher would be so proud), yet he still tries his best to give compliments too! ◈ Aivis Stone: the "stubborn" person who refuses to be stubborn by actually being stubborn because he refuses to be stubborn. Did i confuse anyone? ◈ Rolland Hell : who is at loss. He feels tremendous guilt over allowing Grisia to do what he wanted, and knowing that he could have stopped it. Yet, everyone else supports him, because after all - he is one of them. ◈ Adair: the character that is so high on my list of favorite characters, that he might break the roof - there is only one thing worth mentioning: no one deserves a Vice Captain such as Adair. He would do anything, and I mean EVERYTHING for Grisia. That's how much he loves and respects him, even if what he has to do will hurt him, he was always one of those who managed to change Grisia's opinions on the matter. Even if Grisia didn't keep up what he promised, he was still there for him. “At the time, Knight-Captain Storm and the others had all returned, yet you had not. Because of that, I felt somewhat… lost, so I did not particularly notice him.” ◈ The new adventurer party: Of which the most notable is Taylen, the one Grisia choose as a hero, who holds his own secrets. I wish there were more about them, but this was nice too. ◈ Elaro: Who chose to walk the path Grisia suggested to him (even though a bit too early!), yet he sees the things in Grisia other people can't... “Well, perhaps it was because of your brilliant smile!” ◈ Awaitsun and Alice : who follow the Demon Kings commands, as much as possible. Although Awaitsun is having a hard time doing it, and somewhat regrets supporting Grisia on this matter, because no matter what he did, Grisia was never satisfied and took it out on him. Which, in a way, was actually the point of his whole life: as a duty of the Silent Eagle is to take the brunt of demon king's anger. He deserves so much better, honestly. (As well as Illu who cares about his own creator, Rolland). Alice on the other hand, became even scarrier! Just try to avoid babysitting her children! ◈ Scarlet and Pink and Stephen: the undying that only wanted their own children to stay alive, prosper and do their roles, and help them in their times of need. Yet out of three, only two of their children survived. ► OVERALL: Amazing conclusion, with a strong and well thought of ending. There were just a few questions - I wish i knew what happened to certain characters after the end of the crusade. But i have another sequel and bunch of short stories, so that might explain what happened to his (view spoiler)[army, aka Alice, Awaitsun and illu, because the last i remember, Awaitsun was in a really bad shape. (hide spoiler)] But nevertheless, i believe in Yu Wo :D And then there is the epilogue. Actually the most satisfying part of the book as it made me smile so damn much! ► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 1) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 2) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 3) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 4) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 5) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 6) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 7) ◈ Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 8) ◈ 39th Legend of the Sun Knight (vol 9) + short stories ...more |

TheFinal rating: 5/5 stars Blaze and Leaf instantly rushed out of the room, while Earth gave a sigh, and idly said, “It’s one thing after another. The Demon King is coming, Sun is broken. This time it really is the end of the world!” Um... What just happened? That ending... did i read it right? Oh... oh my god? At this point, the main story and the main point of this whole novel starts. Judgment is hiding something from Grisia, and Grisia is willing to let it go and never find out about it. After almost losing him in the previous book, maybe some things are better left unsaid. But again, some things are better left said - no matter what they are. This time the book focused on the issue of the Demon King, ruler of the Shadow God Church. And one is about to be born in Leaf Bud City - city of the Twelve Holy Knights. And no one is particularly happy about that. Awaitsun came as a Silent Eagle of the Church of the Shadow God and he and other countries support the birth of the Demon King: because if the Demon king is not born, then the world will be destroyed by darkness (if he is born, then the world has 50/50 chance of survival, depending on the Demon King). To choose a demon king, there are three candidates... And no one knows who they are (yet). But, if one thinks about it, it's pretty obvious who the first two candidates would be. To become a demon king, the easiest way is to kill the other candidate and absorb their element. And this time, we have 3 guides of the candidates, the immortal leaches, who want nothing more than ensure their "child" becomes the demon king! As for the ending itself... I actually did not see that one coming! And the epilogue slayed me, because... just... I couldn't believe it. Also, i love how his knights all tease Sun, like, I'm laughing so much hahaha. (Sun does not deserve Adair, his vice captain, honestly). Oh right, and Metal Knight's secret is well... actually good for Sun (oh my god, that whole part with his secret made me just... laugh/cry? Oh my god?) There are also Stephen and Charlotte, new characters and shadowpriest and a knight from the Cathedral of the Shadow god, and Charlotte is very much a fun of Sun Knight .

Final rating: 5/5 stars What does it matter if I can’t learn any sword skills?Final rating: 5/5 stars What does it matter if I can’t learn any sword skills? I honestly wonder if this series will ever stop amazing me? Like, honestly. Why is it so great? Because it breaks stereotypes and is unpredictable in most cases. Especially this one. It has the most shocking beginning and definitely the strangest plot so far, because this is Grisia in his raw - honest to the light god - self. He doesn't hold any punches and this is the point where Grisia... is Grisia, without any constraints. Why? Because Grisia was attacked, ended up severly injured, got telleported to another kingdom, and got amnesia! (He was also rescued by the group of adventurers he, Neo and Aldrizzt encountered in the cave in book 3 and ended up hunting the unicorn! (Don't even ask)). And then there is Scarlet... a tiny mysterious girl who stalks And finally, this book focuses on Ice and Blaze knights. I will just say... They don't have any great time this time around (like Leaf/Hell/etc before, seriously Sun, wtf are you doing to your knights that you love so much?), especially Ice. Although we do get to see his true self, as a caring mother, unrelenting person and the one who really cares about Sun. Anyway, the conclusion: do not piss of Judgment Knight. ► OVERALL: This series is fun, wonderful, with amazing world building, so go for it. it's damn great.

Final rating: 4.75/5 stars “Also, as to why I was so determined to train a spell caster into a knight, there is another very important reason.”Final rating: 4.75/5 stars “Also, as to why I was so determined to train a spell caster into a knight, there is another very important reason.” Just a bit weaker than the previous book, the third book still doesn't disappoint. One could say, almost perfect. Nothing more, nothing less. I still laughed way too much and there were few extremely moving scenes, not to mention the ending, which surprised me! ► STORY: A princess is kidnapped, a future bride of the Son of God of War, Mike, and the condition from kidnapper is that Mike forms an adventurer team and come to get them. What Sun was not expecting was that he and Leaf were gonna become party members. As an archer and a cleric (But Sun is not a cleric, he is clearly a Holy Knight! Ahem...). Ofc his first choice would have been either Judgment or Hell Knight, but apparently, both are unable to come so he had to stick with the nicest guy in the universe, an archer and the pure cutie, the Leaf Knight - Elmairy (or Elmy)! *If you haven't read up to this volume, and wish to remain unspoiled - just in case, then don't read further than this* Thus begins the quest for saving the princess and encountering people Grisia Sun would never want to meet again, because one of them has gold hair, blue eyes and is enough to make even Grisia wish for an escape... The second person though, however, is a dark elf, a despised race, because they are apparently "evil and tricky" bunch. So the biggest problem is... How to deal with the current situation? The answer is simple: follow the stereotypes of rescuing the princess, until something unexpected happens. Short answer: Never ruffle Sun's feathers, because he will never forget any wrongdoings upon him or people he cares about, especially his knights. “Yeah!” Ed, who was behind him suddenly cut in. “No matter how weird he is, he can’t be as weird as our captain!” ► OVERALL: My heart cannot... I just love this series waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. As for the author's question in the epilogue, the answer is... yes, i figured the way Sun did it. (view spoiler)[ The whole fact that Sun went (view spoiler)[blind, (hide spoiler)] was not that hard to figure out once a reader remembered that he could (view spoiler)[sense elements (hide spoiler)], but he sure got me a few times. Final rating: 5/5 stars “From now on, the Sun Knight Platoon will have to run one round within the walls of the city every morning!” I said fiercelyFinal rating: 5/5 stars “From now on, the Sun Knight Platoon will have to run one round within the walls of the city every morning!” I said fiercely. How can these books be better than a lot of books I've read before? I don't know, but it's true. This book is a mess of a thousand events, all ending up with one and intervening perfectly. Also, it's too hilarious and filled with great and moving scenes. God, I love the characters so much. The only thing I do mind is not having female character(s) in bigger roles, but even this princess was interesting. Amazing. Just amazing. This volume is about: 1. What Rolland and Pink are up to. 2. You get to know the Sun Knight's platoon of idiots (Adair is the greatest vice captain Sun ever chose) 3. The Hell Knight problem - you see, the Hell Knight, or (view spoiler)[ Elias (hide spoiler)], wants to quit, and marry the princess. 4. The Son of the God of War also wants to marry the princess. 5. The Sun Knight also wants to marry the princess- Wait what? And that final chapter with Hell's POV was fantastic :D Just fantastic. Ofc, it is possible to find english translation. This needs to be more popular. Honestly.

Final rating: 5/5 stars ““Remember, child, no matter what the circumstances are, the Sun Knight is always perfect!”Final rating: 5/5 stars ““Remember, child, no matter what the circumstances are, the Sun Knight is always perfect!” edit: added character section! I am crying, The Legend of the Sun knight book series is just too perfect? And yes, it also has a manhua adaptation that covered the first two volumes perfectly, but you should still read these books. You can read them here, translated by princerevolution group who got permission from the author, until there is official translation on English. So grab your chance and read it, so we can get it to be liscenced mwahahhaha! I don't remember the last time i laughed so much when it came to high fantasy? The ideas, the characters, the main character's POV? All of it is hilarious, sarcastic, and just freaking amazing? I cannot even begin to describe the lunacy and greatness of this book. This story made a new definition of stereotypes. 12 knights, who are supposed to follow the stereotype of their respective original knight's personality, traits, appearance and even daily duties and speech, have to stay true even to their mutual relationships. These books follow the journey of the Sun Knight, the most graceful, charismatic, merciful, elegant and kind knight who is everything not described here. He is the sheer opposite of the personality he is supposed to play. So what happens, when a Death Knight appears - a raised corpse who has a goal he needs to fulfill in order to rest in piece - and says he will come back for the Sun Knight? Well, that puts our Sun Knight as a prime suspect of the Death Knight's grugde. How to deal with it? Find a necromancer. ► CHARACTERS: EDIT: After finishing all volumes, I decided to expand this review a bit with the character section. I will put their names under spoiler tags so you can find out eventually as you read! Warm faction: ◈ Grisia Sun: the actual main character, who is expected to be the most elegant, graceful (even when dying or falling down the stairs or fainting), always smiling, benevolent and kindhearted is actually sadistic, grudge holding, sarcastic, unrelenting, brave, dedicated, overprotective and kind towards the people he loves, but he would also use every opportunity to make them owe him favors, do his work and just be lazy in general. He also wants a girlfriend, badly. His best friend is Judgment Knight, who is supposed to be his biggest enemy as he is the leader of the Cold faction and does everything opposite of the Sun Knight. And yet, these two are the true besties, unlike him and Earth, who are supposed to be "besties" but are actually the biggest enemies. ◈Ceo Storm: is supposed to be carefree, never to appear, big flirt with women, always to wink in their presence (also has to dye his hair into blue) but is in actuality a big work a holic and will probably die from correcting all of the documents they throw at him. If he was gone the whole church would colapse! ◈ Georgo Earth: the "honest" and "loyal" and "friend" of the Sun Knight. You can scratch the honest part, because his words are more poisonous than Metal's! He hates Grisia with passion! ◈ Elmairy Leaf: An archer and the nicest person there is. Too interesting that his personality actually matches the first Leaf knight. A mother to the team in a way (but unlike Ice being one), he supports everyone and would do anything for them. Also worries a lot. ◈ Demos Cloud: A drifter who is always there, even when you don't see him. He usually reads books and is librarian, knows all, is super great swordsman and very hard to find. His tragic past allowed him to find peace in duties of the Cloud knight. ◈Chikus Blaze: Another knight whose real personality matches perfectly with the personality of the first knight. He is hot tempered, loves breaking doors (but some doors should never be broken) and specializes in cleansing spirits. Loves Sun Knight with passion. Worries a lot and regrets a lot if he hurts someone by accident. Cold-hearted faction ◈ Lesus Judgement: The leader of the cruel faction. He must never forgive criminals and must exact punishment on them or give the order for it. The criminals must never be forgiven. Yet, it's a duty and personality that is opposite of what he is: trully kind hearted, brother figure, that cares a lot about his brothers and would never abandon any of them, no matter what the cost. He is the only one the Sun Knight will listen to. ◈ Ecilan Ice: supposed to be always calm, collected, and never to show any emotions, and yet he loves summer because he can make people eat his sweets and ice cream, actually feeds the team and is their actual mother figure. ◈Vival Moon: Arrogant, narcissistic and acts like no one is good enough to be in his presence. Actually would do anything for his team (after a bit of persuasion (for example, dealing with Metal's situation on Judgment's query). Only wants a girlfriend who is higher than him. ◈Laica Metal: The knight whose words are supposed to be so bad, that they are poisonous and offensive always. Yet, the problem is that when he tries to do it, he gives out compliments and when he is not trying, he actually succeeds in making people bleed from his words. He gets happy every time someone tells him he was offensive! Not to mention that he hides a deep insecurity that he solves by having a certain tendencies that Moon and Judgment help him out with. idolizes Judgment wayyyyyyyyy too much. ◈ Aivis Stone: As first knight was so stubborn, so should be all of his successors. Yet this Stone is so stubborn for believing that he is not stubborn that he actually fits well with his role. ◈ And finally, the Hell Knight: a shadow Knight who is said to be the shadow of the Sun Knight, but he is never around that some of them think that he doesn't even exist and that he is in actuality, actual Sun Knight's alter ego! Even though he belongs to the cruel cold faction, he answers dirrectly to the Sun knight. ◈ Adair: Grisia's vice captain. will always defend Grisia from anything, is completely loyal, omnipotent, dedicated, and would do anything to keep Grisia safe. Grisia doesn't deserve him, honestly. ◈ Pink: a necromancer that is over two tho- very young girl who is contracted by a church to make undead for the Sun Knight to have something to went out his frustrations on, because the Sun Knight hates nothing more than undead creatures! She is mysterious, filled with many secrets, and hides them well. She has an agenda that may or may not endanger everyone... ◈ Mysterious Death Knight: a resurected person who holds a grudge against the living. To become Death Knight, one must suffer extreme regret/injustice and the only way to kill them or save them is by burning them to the second death, or find the cause of his regret. So why does he want to kill the Sun Knight? Well.... ► OVERALL: Thankfully the series is over, and I recommend it to anyone (ofc i haven't read it on chinese, but it's too perfect, you should try it if you want something for a change).

Final Rating: 4.5/5 Harris sighed. “It’s a strange world, Mr. Hart. I’ll always fight for the promise of an easier tomorrow. Right or wrong, seFinal Rating: 4.5/5 Harris sighed. “It’s a strange world, Mr. Hart. I’ll always fight for the promise of an easier tomorrow. Right or wrong, selfish or not, this is what we want.” He nodded to himself. “And that’s enough. Whatever it takes.” Lately I find it difficult with where to start when writing reviews. I loved it, but the plot was kind of predictable - not the general plot itself, but the direction it was heading in and it turned to happen exactly like that! But! So many revelations!!! How the clock tower spirits came to be? Check. Aetas and the rest of the gods actually existing or not? Check. But there are always more questions. I just hadn't expected that the clock spirit's became what they are by that method and it was freaky but it all tied in nicely with what Danny did at the end of the first book. It was interesting, so many things happening at once, and I loved that near the last 40% every character group of chapters ended with cliffhanger and it kept me reading for more. Sometimes the pace fell, but then it picked up quickly. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: There are many things happening. First: A terroristic attack in India led to the tower in Rath has not stopped despite being destroyed. The Lead wishes that Daphne and Danny investigate what is going on in India, especially Danny because of the attacks he survived through before. Second: Danny has been living in Enfield for 8 months so far, happily in relationship with Colton. Colton, who has revealed himself to the whole town and is helping them around. “Half an hour ago.” Danny groaned, and the man laughed again. “You’re handy with the clock, and that’s what matters.” The man nodded to Colton, who was now standing beside Danny. “Good work, son.” Third: India and England have been in very strained relationship ever since England occupied India, and made it so their queen is going to be crowned as Queen-Empress of India. Four: And then the Lead summoned both Danny and Colton to go to India to investigate the clock incidents. Both of them accepted because Daphne always wanted to go to India and feel a bit closer with her deceased dad; And Danny accepted because he had to sort his feelings out: he didn't want a repeat of another Maldon incident because Colton and Danny fell in love. Not to mention he still has nightmares, his parents being reunited did make him feel better, but it also became stressful because suddenly - he existed again in his parents' eyes. And then... His father found out by accident that Danny and the clock spirit Colton were in relationship. A forbidden one, to be exact. And did not react well. And when he calmed down from his panic attack and talked to Cassie and Colton about his father finding out, Colton came to conclusion it would be the best just to talk with him instead of avoiding him forever. And finally: As Danny and Daphne go to India, meet Akash, a pilot, and his sister Meena (Indian's clock mechanic), to investigate; Colton's tower had been attacked by an airship, destroying the tower in the process, forcing Colton to bolt with his central cog and Stopping the town itself before leaving to seek the help from the one he knows would be the best choice: Danny's father Christopher. And the threat is looming on the sky, someone who wishes to get their hands on both Danny... and Colton, no matter what it takes. *** Now, let us move on the characters, both old ones and new ones. ➥ Danny has been through a lot of trauma, near death experiences and still has severe case of PTSD, yet he is trying to get better and healing, not only being near Colton, but being in different town, knowing that his parents are finally back together, knowing that their town was safe... But he still thinks about what Colton would do if something happened to Danny. He couldn't bear to be the cause of another Maldon, yet he loves Colton enough that he would risk it. But thinking about it all, he decides it might be for the best if they separated for some time so he could think about it. Danny always questions right and wrong, morals, agendas, thoughts of people around him, trying to find out how they tick, how they think, and always, always, being honest and not holding any breath when it comes to saying exactly how he feels knowing very well that it could get him hurt or worse. But in short, and without sugarcoating it, Danny cannot stand bullshit by other people and will call them out on that. And in the meantime have tons of panic attacks or super moments of bravery and then another panic attack. This is something I loved. He doesn't appear to be that type of "i am strong person so I will provoke you because I am fearless" - he is not. He is afraid, he is afraid to die, he is afraid of what would happen if he was ever captured by the people targeting him - he doesn't know what they plan to do with him, or to do to him and if they are willing to hurt him to get what they want. And at the same time, he is compassionate, would keep secrets if it meant people stayed safe, and would not use them against them. I love Danny for who he is. And no, despite saying he is "fine" he is 98% definitely not fine. ➥ Colton feels a lot lately. Emotions that wreck him so much that it causes his own clock to go beyond control, whenever he is around Danny. He may not feel everything like a human should, and is rediscovering his lost emotions, but there is a fact that his emotions could make things a lot worse for Enfield if he doesn't control them. This is one of the reasons Danny chose to leave him, with the promise of being back. Both of them have to sort out their relationship before they can move on. Meanwhile, he is still the same old curios spirit.... until.... an airship wrecks his tower, leaving him no choice but to leave Enfield alone, choosing to stop the town with agreement from his people before his tower completely falls apart. So he relies on only person he trust to help him - Danny's father. He did not exactly get a warm welcome, but he was promised that he would be fixed as soon as possible. And yet... he cannot stand to show Danny's parents the threat letter sent to Danny and it's eating him inside. Instead, he shows it to Cassie and Brandon, and later gets his own threat letter: Go to India, or else. But how can he, a clock spirit, leave England? Well, thank Christopher and his team for finding a solution. So Colton takes courage to go, alone, to another country... “I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I can’t wait for you this time.” Meanwhile, something unexpected keeps happening to Colton. Never in his long life had he had dreams. Dreams of two teenagers, Bell and Castor; Bell - who had sick sister, Castor: who was infatuated with Bell; both of them who were connected to time. Who are they, and why does he dream of people he doesn't know? “I missed you,” Castor whispered. ➥ Daphne has a lot going on in her life. Her father is dead, her mother in asylum and she needs money and recognition. She is female mechanic and she needs to prove herself. Getting to go to India was something she wanted and eagerly decided to do, because she would feel closer to her heritage from the other side. She connects with more people along the way, gets on better terms with Danny, shares her sorrows, past, hopes and dreams, and being invincible and unyielding. Despite being cold at the beginning and making her mistakes, she redeemed herself. ➥ Meena and Akash are Indian siblings who are in charge of Danny and Daphne when they arrive. Meena is a ghadi wallah, a clock mechanic, and like every other mechanic, she doesn't believe in clock spirits. In the meantime, their religion and their gods differ from England's and so does the origin story, which was quite interesting as there were parallels between the stories and myths. Meena is also a female clock mechanic, which is another thing that she shares with Daphne: both of them are being frowned upon from breaking from stereotypes, from daring to become investing into something only men should do, instead of being good wives and doing whatever they have as good females. This irritates her, and also irritates her brother, who cares about his sister more than anything. Akash in the meantime is easy going guy, the carefree but also seriously protective brother and a man who loves having fun. And then he finds someone veeeeeeeeeery interesting to interact with. ➥ Harris and Partha are two soldiers who were told to take care of Daphne and Danny. Although being Englishman and Indian, the two of them grew closer, despite knowing what would happen if someone EVER found out that they were in relationship. Which happens, unfortunately, by Danny and Meena. Although they promise not to tell, especially Danny, who finds himself in quite the similar situation and he feels what they have is strong enough. ►►► OVERALL: So many things happened, and so many characters have been in it, that If i continue to write I will spoil everything. Overcome by sudden giddiness, Danny struck a gallant pose. “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your fair hair!” This was a pleasant surprise. I haven't expected to become so obsessed with reading it that I dropped doing everything else. Just that speaks for itself. I loved it. Now, I do notice that people that I am friends with on Goodreads didn't really rate it higher than four stars, I am and will rate it five (actually 4.5) because it kept my attention, it made my heart beat faster, it made me feels. And i love that feeling. I love when books do that to me, as it speaks that the writer did a great job delivering. Not to mention the story itself is highly unique. The world building is a mix of steampunk Victorian London world with added mythology of Gods that control time and how the people who could control time were born. Not really control, but actually fix time. Through the book the mythology is explored and I have a feeling that those Gods will be a plot point for the later books. What I really loved is that you can read this book as a standalone. You really don't have to continue if you so desire, but there is a lot of things that I loved in order to not continue. So I shall. As much as I loved the fact that this was lgbt orientated - i freaking loved it! - I felt that the romance was too fast. That's why there is 0.5 star less. But then again, I loved it. I loved that our main character, Danny, identified as he did and he was proud of it. It was who he was. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: In a world controlled by giant clocks that dictate time, a mechanic is needed to fix the clocks should anything go wrong. If anything is missing, if anything is wrong, it must be repaired immediately in order for the time to not interfere with the humans living there. A missing hour, a missing day... everything affects. But, the only thing that is worse than death is that when the clock is destroyed and causes town to "Stop". This happened to the clock tower in Maldon, where the clock just stopped and everyone got frozen inside the city, unable to leave. One of those people stuck in there - a mechanic - is Danny's father. Flash forward to three years later and nothing has been done yet. Except the Union is trying to build another tower, hoping that the new time would reset the old and that people inside would be freed. Daniel "Danny - "I'm fine"" Hart (do you see what I did there?) is definitely not fine, even though he claims to be. His father is frozen in time, his mother forgot that she has a son, and he feels extremely guilty for telling him to go to Maldon... so guilty that everything that goes wrong in the present makes him feel like it was all his fault. Not to mention that 1) he's the youngest certified mechanic and 2) he had already been in life and death situation when the clock tower mechanism in Shere exploded while he was in there, hurting, scarring and traumatizing him for life enough that he still has panic attacks. The poor 17 year old certainly has his share of issues. Most of the time he knows when he does anything that is wrong, and most of the times he acts on it if it will make things work out and be fine. The problem starts when the full ricochet of his actions blow up in his face - or rather affect his mental health. This is what I loved - he is not a regular nice guy who wouldn't hurt a fly, but rather someone who thinks, acts, and does with a full weight of consequences on his mind. And there is also his self hatred and the fact that whenever something happens to him, he strongly believes he deserved it and it breaks my heart every time. “It’s sad and happy at the same time,” the spirit said. “Rain.” When Danny nodded, Colton asked, “Why do you talk that way about yourself? You don’t deserve it.” And finally, there is his attraction to boys, the one that he hasn't hidden from his closest people, but still knows that even though in his town it's allowed, there are still people who frown upon the fact that he is gay. And so he finally gets the assignment to fix a clock in Colton tower in Enfield... which leads us to... Colton aka, the spirit of the tower in Enfield. Which is ridiculous because - you know - it's a myth as clock spirits never show themselves. But when Danny found out that clock spirits do exist... the gears in his mind started to work out. You see, no one believed Matthias when he said that the Maldon tower stopped because of the clock spirit. Matthias was the one who was reported by someone that he fell in love with a clock spirit, and therefore he was stripped of his position and ridiculed for it. After all, there are no clock spirits. And therefore, Christopher Hart was sent to fix Maldon before Maldon stopped. Not even Danny believed in clock spirits until he finally met Colton. “No, I won’t get in trouble.” Colton is a being that has been around since the tower had been built. He rarely interacted and had shown himself to anyone in Enfield, but the problem started when no one was coming to repair him because the damages weren't obvious enough. So he took a matter in his own hands and started tearing his own clock appart - hurting himself in the process, trying to get attention - so anyone - could come there and fix his problems. Except the damage of the clocks affects the clock spirits automatically. Despite Colton's preferences to self harm to get attention (something that is very triggering for a lot of people, so be careful if you read this) - something that has been brought to my attention which I honestly loved is that self harm for attention has been discussed and not treated as something to be skipped just because it's a part of the story. His realm was Enfield. He could never leave, never experience the things that people were free to have—were lucky to have. A prisoner locked inside a tower. Colton himself is a bit of a work. If he is interesting in something, he will act on it. He is highly curious, as well as very lonely, and that loneliness is starting to lift the moment he impersonated Brandon (an assistent to mechanic) the first few times Danny came to repair him. He found out that he rather liked having someone to talk to, and that the world is a big place, something he would most likely never be able to see for himself. “I want …” Colton paused, then shook his head. “Well, it doesn’t matter what I want. Still,” he said, his voice distant as he turned back to the window, “it would be something, being in another place.” Matthias is a disgraced mechanic now working as a teacher for a new generation and his most talented pupil is Daphne, who is also the first woman mechanic and has been frowned upon because of it. She is also youngest mechanic, becoming one as 18 year old (along with Lucas) until Danny broke their records as the youngest one and natural talent. Matthias has been banned from Maldon, but that doesn't stop him from feeling guilt over the fact that entire town stopped because he went away. In a way, he has been supportive of Danny and his mother, becoming a father like figure to replace the one frozen in time. Daphne needs money, she is half Indian and she is well aware that her position is won by her hard work and she hates that she gets overshadowed and when she gets screwed for something she didn't do. And Lucas... Well, he is just an asshole in general, overconfident, provoking, just... asshole. But then again, to me it looked like he also suffered from inferiority/superiority complex that someone younger than him became mechanic as well. Danny's best friend is Cassie, a car mechanic who takes care not of him, but also of his auto/car. She is supportive, protective of her friend, and has a high amount of guilt for letting her brother William die because she didn't check his car that day. She needs more love, honestly. Danny's mother, Leila, is an another story. She didn't exactly forget that she has a son. She is just not really interested in having one. But, this whole book is based on Danny's POV and how he sees things from his perspective. But, one thing is obvious to him: his mother loves his father more than she loves him, and would do anything just to be closer to him, even abandoning her own son, who believes that he would deserve it... Deserve being abandoned by the only family member he has, all the while while he suffers from extreme PTSD. But then again... he may or may not be wrong about how exactly his mother feels about him. ►►► OVERALL: I believe I covered all the characters so I will finish up with this. So what happens, when... 1) the clock spirit falls in love and so does his mechanic; 2) protesters make a mess because new tower is being built in Maldon; 3) sudden bombing of the towers that almost cause few towns to be Stopped, further worsening Danny's ptsd; 4) when someone stands behind those attacks, but what is the reason? Overall, highly interesting book, good characters, nice plot and unique setting. Give it a try. ►►► OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ TYPE OF SERIES: Trilogy. ⚠ Point of View: third ⚠ Cliffhanger: no ⚠ Triggers: self harm ⚠ Love triangle: no ⚠ Angst: yes ⚠ Supernatural: yes, gods, clock spirits, mechanics ⚠ Explicit content: no ►►► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ Timekeeper (Timekeeper, #1) ◈ Chainbreaker (Timekeeper, #2) ...more |

Be anyone but himself, and never be anyone for too long.” CONSIDERING I'M STILL THINKING ABOUT THIS SERIES, TWO MONTHS LATER, AND I CAN'T LITERALLY STOP THINKING ABOUT IT OR HOW NONE OF THE BOOKS I READ RECENTLY CAN'T MEASURE NOR COMPETE, I BEG YOU TO PLEASE READ IT ALL. Oh boy, you are either going to HATE it with passion for it's clearly not so well defined nor thought out things or LOVE IT for the sake of characters that are amazing, and other two books. Because, oh boy lemme tell you. This is the second try I had with this book. Started it out a long time ago as a buddy read, but finished it now on my friend's request. First time, I disliked the writing style and stopped reading. After few nudges from a friend, and her promise of great characters and suffering/angst, I gleefully joined the ride. So this is the deal. Some things are really illogical, as you will notice while reading it, but considering the pros outweight the cons in my own weight in gold, I won't talk about it. When I read books I read them for only one thing as a priority = characters. If the characters are not interesting, if they are not well developed, if they don't amount to anything, then no matter how good or original the story is, it's going to be horrible. But, if the characters are great, even bad story lines can be redeemed. In this case, while the first book didn't really blew my mind out, the other two did. I started to care more and more for the characters, and I found their imaginary "Exy" sport fun. ►►► STORY & CHARACTERS: There are many characters in this book, but three of them stick out like a candle, namely Niel "I'm fine" Josten (our actual protagonist and narrator - in third person), Kevin Day (someone who knows who Neil is, but is oblivious because Neil hides his identity well), and Andrew Minyard (who has a promise to keep and who protects Kevin, even from Neil himself). The book itself starts with Neil settling in a faraway town, playing what he loves: Exy, a hybrid sport between Lacrosse and Hockey (imaginary game, of course). But then, a coach from another school comes seeking him out for recruitment. Neil's own coach sent his files to David Wymack, who - along with Andrew Minyard (who is here because he's not letting Kevin go anywhere alone) & Kevin Day (as he was familiar face because he abandoned the first ranked team Edgar Allan's Ravens due to an incident in which his arm was broken) and they came to see if Neil was indeed fitting the mold that Palmetto's Foxes fit in. Wymack's first opinion onNeil's past issue is abusive parents. Because every movement, every flinch from Wymack proves just that. Neil's paranoia, Neil's parents never showing up, unable to reach them.... This all gives off warning signs. Which is .... partly true. Neil Josten indeed has very abusive father, who is a part of crime family, and is hunting down his late mother (who died very recently from the beginning of the first book) and Niel (whose real name isn't Neal) to the edge of the world. Nowhere is safe for him, he is alone and if his father finds out where he is, with whom he is, and gets him - well... he's not going to be welcomed back, but tortured and then killed after who knows how long. All of this is really not a great reminder that he can do whatever he wants including going somewhere else, especially since Kevin Day is someone who actually knew him when he was younger. But Neil wears eye contacts, dyes his hair and looks different in general because he is much older than when Kevin first met him, so he is relying on that fact that he can actually choose to stay and play what he wants to play. The one thing I really loved about Neil is that he is so detached from some of the normal stuff that he would smile at something crashing and burning (or dying) if it means he gets out alive or that someone he cares about gets alive (and is not shaken at all). Considering what kind of enviroment he grew up in, it would be strange to react any different way (or not, considering he's been out of that for years). But i loved it. So yes, in short, this whole story is about how fast can Neil run away if shit goes wrong. You see, Neil has to hide his identity and looks, but his certain characteristics.... like... not being able to stand by and instead roasts someone LIVE on TELEVISION while IN HIDING certainly doesn't speak much of his actual survival insticts, but given what happened at that point in order for Neil, who is - like i said before - extremely paranoid person, well... you see. But anyway, I loved Neil, because he is such well thought out character. He is loyal, he is paranoid, but if he cares about someone, he will fight for them, no matter what the cost. Even though any sense of relationships and normal life had been beaten out of him, he's attracted to them like Icarus was attracted to Sun. He flies and flies, but he eventually knows that he will fall down from the heights into his own demise. Kevin as well, as someone who is actually a third important person in the series - considering it was on his request that Neil's accepted into his own team - has also a stunning amount of character growth and his issues are sorted out (which is where Neil and Kevin are similar: they are both running away from their so called families, and both get panic attacks whenever they get too close to them, so yeah). To the point that he finally takes his own chances and does the right thing. An ex Exy champion, who was as stunning as they come, who was left handed before the incident, before he was forced to step down and try his best to use his non dominant hand... And one thing connecting them all is Andrew. Andrew protects Kevin from others, because Kevin promised he would help Andrew find something to live for. And Andrew is the type that has been betrayed his whole life, so he takes a very serious look on promises and keeps all of them till the end and makes them come true. And Andrew, who is as fucked up, who dislikes being touched, who is suspicious of everyone who is different, who sees Neil for who he is (a pathological liar) but still appreciates the little truths is just... amazing. One thing I did dislike is that Andrew's disorder was not mentioned in the book, but it's in fact (as confirmed by the author) manic depression. Just heads up. The first meeting with Neil included a racquet and hitting the main character with it to stop him from running, all while he grins like a psycho. He is called the whole time a tiny psycho so no wonder. You are either going to hate or love him (view spoiler)[ like how much he hates Neil, for example hahahaha (hide spoiler)]. I love him. He's just so complicated and interesting in general. Another beautiful and worthy mention is Renee, who also had a past full of knives and violence, a good Christian that can help even the most desperate, who is "a bad person trying to be one." I loved her growth through the series, her help, her dedication to the others. Dan and Allison as well were great, these girls who are bold, who will fight for those they love, who will take no shit, who will rise up and challenge. Dan, who was laughed at for being a female captain, and Allison who loves Seth so much that she thinks of his health, helps him out, and no matter how many issues they had, they did it all together... Allison, who rejected her parent's fortune so she could play. They all needed help and they found a family in bunch of idiots (and later on including the monster group (aka Andrew's group)). Seth, who cares only about Allison... Then there is Aaron, a twin brother of Andrew, who btw, did not actually grew up together with Andrew and couldn't give a shit about anything. But then again, he and Andrew have made a promise, and Andrew will be damned if he did not keep his own end up of bargain - which he did and Aaron is now well aware of what kind of person his older twin is. But even so, he strives, he tries, he wishes so many things, and yet he is held back by a promise and of thought of not failing it. because he knows the consequences if he doesn't hold his end of the deal. There is also Nicky, who has a boyfriend in Germany, whose family didn't approve of his sexuality, who ended up estranged from them, who tries his best to help his cousins (aka the twins) who just tries so hard to help. Who is interesting, who needed help, who got help, who found the help (who someone oversteps his bounds and does questionable things sometimes but then again...) Matt who is fascinated with everything. Who will protect whatever and whoever he can, he's stable, reliable, interesting. Wymack who made a team of people who were screwed up in life in order to help them see that they could become someone important. That they could be seen. That they would be needed. They might start from zero, from being nothings, but he knows that his children have a big potentional and that they just need a push and a glue that sticks them together... Wymack, who is everything a real parent is supposed to be. Abby and Betsy a doctor and psychiatrist who help hold the team together, who listen to them, who take care of their injuries and their shattered feelings, who know how to help, how to heal their broken hearts. And so on and on.... Overall, I have so many feels about whole team in general: the fact that they bet on everything, that they get along as much as they don't, the fact that they are there for each other, even when they don't and can't stand each other... And when I tell you this book has LGBT, I kid you not. It really has. So if you wanna read it for this, go ahead! It's not a bait, and certainly delievers, so be prepared to guess who are the end game couples in this :D That is, if everyone survives till the end of book 3. it's a story about survivors, and their journeys to better futures, better lives, overcoming their traumas and battling their demons. I promise that book 2 and 3 are worth reading it. Also check this great FAQ from author when you are done for more info :D ►►► OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ TYPE OF SERIES: Trilogy: All for the game. Completed. ⚠ Point of View: Third person, multiply POVs. ⚠ Triggers (for the whole series): graphic torture, drug abuse, alcholoh abuse, (view spoiler)[rape, also rape by family member(s) (hide spoiler)], cutting, depression, panic attacks, there's a lot ⚠ Love triangle: No love triangles, thank god. ⚠ Angst: Of course. A LOT OF IT. ⚠ Supernatural: No. ⚠ Explicit content: Yes, in the later books. ⚠ Ending type: (view spoiler)[HEA for the end of the series. (hide spoiler)] ⚠ Note: Excellent series, a bit slow and hard to get into at the beginning but worth ALL OF IT (and all of the pain). ...more |

And maybe it’s a good thing, the way we never stop surprising each other. I have read this in 4 and a half hour. It was so damn worth it. This book made me smile, made me teary-eyed and laugh like a maniac. It was charming and it was dealing with a lot of things. This is a stand alone story - it has a beginning and an end. But, it seems author has one more book in plan related to this one and I honestly can't wait to read that one too. So, like I said before, this book is funny. It's also adorable. And it's written from first POV - and our narrator is amazing. I loved him to bits and never did he irritate me. And also, wide variety of characters, and most of them had nicely developed character. This is a story about falling in love to someone you didn't meet in person, falling in love with someone who keeps bringing the best in you out. It's also about friendship, support, but also about consequences of lying and hiding things. This book had everything. -1 star is for me actually guessing who it was around 50%. The mystery of the mystery person named "Blue" - I thought about it a lot, and kept looking for clues closely and then I got it - one small sentence, hidden among the others - I didn't oversee it and I knew. I was almost 80% sure by that point but I had a little hope that it was someone else. I really wanted it to happen, but then another scene happened and I knew that he wouldn't be Blue. And then another thing happened and I seriously began to doubt if I got it right. Well, you never know. Anyway, it's a nice mystery and you can get to conclusion of it if you REALLY pay attention to small details and connect the dots. One word - it's all it took for me to apparently get the right person. And I loved it - when I did find out I knew on whom I should pay close attention too - how that person reacts, how Blue feels around them, what Blue does around them. ► STORY: The story is quite simple: Martin, another guy from Simon's school, sees Simon's (I'll just call him Si, like most in the book) email because Si forgot to log out. “So, what’s the point of the fake name?” he asks. And he found it a right measure to use against Si in order to hook up with Abby, Si's friend. But eventually I noticed Nick switching seats with Bram Greenfeld at lunch—calculated switching, designed to maximize his odds of sitting near Abby. And then the eyes. The famous Nick Eisner lingering, lovesick eyes. We’d been down that vomit-inducing road before with Amy Everett at the end of freshman year. Though, I have to admit there’s something fascinating about Nick’s nervous intensity when he likes someone. Simon wouldn't have any problems with being out to the world (but deep inside that is not particularly true, and he wants it out on his terms, when, where and who knows), but he goes along with it, not just for the reason above, but because he doesn't want to see what Blue would do if their mails spread. He didn't want to risk that - and so he starts conspiring... against his friends, while trying to help Martin as less as possible without risking his situation. After all, no one knows about Simon and he doesn't need it spread. And Blue's identity keeps haunting him. Who is he? What does he look like? And why does he keep making him so damn happy just by talking to him over emails? Enter the key candidates {according to my list, not Si's}: Nick (although Si is sure it's not him because N. is as straight as he could be), Garrett, Bram, Cal, hell, even Martin and his brother, and whoever else. Or someone else entirely. Someone he hadn't met yet. ► CHARACTERS: ◈ Simon is adorable. He is so up to date with everything and he keeps on referencing stuff as much as possible. He is very sweet, but he also knows how to bite back if necessary, and he has very good relationship with his family. It's just the fact that he is not ready to tell them the biggest truth about himself, that they didn't know. “Anyway,” he says, “it’s pretty obvious that you don’t want people to know.” Only person he could share it is his Blue - Blue, who understands him, who supports him, with whom he is generally open and he keeps on relying for keeping his secrets. He’s someone. He may even be someone I know. But I don’t know who. And I’m not sure I want to know. He also has very good relationships with his friends, but then it starts being a tricky ground to walk on - he is well aware of consequences of doing things behind their back, but sometimes he is not doing anything about it and he just lets them flow, but he realizes that it is wrong and tries to undo it anyway he can. Sometimes, it's just not enough. “Si, did you see Nick playing guitar outside the atrium?” Simon also has 2 sisters - Alice and Nora, and really cool parents - at least in their opinion {and in mine}. But it's just hard enough for him to tell them something he realized a long time ago, but the problem is that everything is also made a big deal when it comes to anyone in his family and he didn't want that. But I’m tired of coming out. All I ever do is come out. I try not to change, but I keep changing, in all these tiny ways. I get a girlfriend. I have a beer. And every freaking time, I have to reintroduce myself to the universe all over again. Did i mention he is really funny? I feel a storm of laughter brewing. “You think I like Leah.” And then, the conversations between the two of them (Si and Blue): So, I keep thinking about the idea of secret identities. Do you ever feel locked into yourself? I’m not sure if I’m making sense here. I guess what I mean is that sometimes it seems like everyone knows who I am except me. ◈ Others: Leah and Nick are his best friends. They have known each other for years, and he sees clearly who has feelings for whom... Nick and Leah are supportive but even they have feelings, of course, and act on them as well. Abby is his recent friend, they have known each other for few months and he likes her enough to trust her too. But Abby is also a source of his blackmail problem. Martin wants to go out with Abby and Si needs to do something to help it come true. While Martin doesn't fit into Si's category of good friends, after everything he keeps requesting him to do, he finds out that maybe Martin is not really so bad, and he starts liking him. I fall a little bit in love with everyone. Even Taylor. Then there are Bram and Garrett, "awkward silence Bram and semi-douche Garrett" who end up being quite good too. (And both of them willingly dressed up as cheerleaders along with Nick on Gender Bender day). And then there is Cal, who is also stage manager for their play and "It’s funny that his job is basically to order us around and be stressed out, because he’s the least authoritative person I’ve ever met. He’s a little bit soft-spoken, and he has an actual southern accent." But is Blue one of them, or someone else completely? ► OVERALL: Wonderful book - funny, cute, sometimes a bit angsty, but not too much. It wasn't all cakes and flowers here - no, there were some other things present here too. AND I LOVED IT. Also, I totally support Simon on this: "If there’s one thing the Tumblr has taught me, it’s that a lot of guys consider it hot when a girl is a lesbian. Though, I guess it happens in reverse. There are girls like Leah, who do these yaoi pencil sketches and post them to websites." It's interesting because through the ages I have seen people not turning away when it comes to lesbians, well, much less then when it comes to gays. And also, REFERENCES, SO MANY OF THEM: “It’s a dementor robe over my clothes. I think you’ll survive.” OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ Standalone: Yes, but will also have a spin off sequel ⚠ Point of View: First POV, 1 character ⚠ Cliffhanger: No ⚠ Triggers: homophobia, bullying, blackmailing ⚠ Love triangle: Love geometry of all sorts, but not to worry about and barely noticeable ⚠ Angst: Somewhat ⚠ Supernatural: No ⚠ Explicit content: Barely explicit at all, but you know, quite obvious hints ⚠ Ending type: (view spoiler)[HEA (hide spoiler)] ⚠ Recommended: YES! ► MEMORABLE QUOTES: There are many of quotes I wanted to add here, but I wouldn't have enough space left and most of the others would be too spoilerish, so I will regretfully skip them. Here are the other quotes I loved instead: ...more |

I always have a hard Final rating: 4.75/5 stars And I finally wrote a review for this. At first I didn't know what to write when it came to this book. I always have a hard time reviewing books that are translated to my language. it's always easier to review books that were written in their original language (which in my case, that narrows down only to English, but what can I do). In this case, the translation was perfect. Everything was perfect. It was one of the best translations so far and I loved it. I can't help but just praise UrbanReads publishing house for delivering such a great translation. Seriously. Now I am patiently waiting for other books to come out. Another hint. If you plan to read this book - buy paperback/hardcover whichever is in store. I wouldn't suggest ebook considering the complex layouts of the book and lots of images. Trust me on that. This book is visually stunning. I loved all of the characters. I enjoyed reading about them. And then there is AI which was at first called AIDAN but in my version it's VIKTOR (for translation of his full name to have a meaning) and I was confused when me and my friend discussed it and I was like... who's AIDAN? lol. ► OVERALL: This book has issues, that's true. It's also dialogue heavy and I love dialogue heavy books. It's a fast read, you can literally finish it in a day, even though it has 600 very big pages. But it's worth it. I can't wait to read the sequel. It was fantastic, great idea, with fantastic execution. Overall, amazing book. Highly recommended. OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: ⚠ Standalone: No. Part of a series. But, the first book can be read as a stand alone, if one does not wish to continue the series. ⚠ Point of View: POV: it's complicated, multiply characters. ⚠ Cliffhanger: Yes and no ⚠ Triggers: gore (?) ⚠ Love triangle: No ⚠ Angst: Yes ⚠ Explicit content: No ⚠ Recommended: Hell yes ...more |

Final rating: 4.75/5 stars Loneliness is a funny disease. You don’t realize how badly you’re infected until someone gives you a shot of contentFinal rating: 4.75/5 stars Loneliness is a funny disease. You don’t realize how badly you’re infected until someone gives you a shot of contentment—and then it wears off. Brigid Kemmerer is amazing author. I love her Elemental series and when I saw that she wrote another book, I HAD to read it - that woman knows how to angst and write happy things. I did not regret picking up this book and i certainly don't regret being surprised by it. I went into this story blind, without looking for genres, without reading summary - I just wanted to read another book of hers. (Even though i still have to finish elemental series). This is the reason for 4.75 star rating. If it gets more books it will automatically go to 5 stars. There is no doubt of it. I would do it in a heartbeat. This is a stand alone book - but it has the story to make it more, possibly one or two more books and i really, really wish i get to read more. You could say the case is solved but there is still more to it. And that can be exploited for other books which i really want and wish to read. There are many things I did not see coming, which is great because i was trying to predict it and i failed most of the time. I was even shocked and stunned and I just had to read on and on and on and for my sake, find out whats going on here!!!! The last half of the book was quite surprising indeed. Her writing style is easy and fast to read and as usually, she is able to wring out the emotions like a piece of cake. I loved that. She made me laugh, had my heart beat faster, hurt, stung, and made me sob many times. If you love reading a book filled with angst, but also with suspense, thriller, cuteness and something very interesting read this book. I won't tell what the point is, but like i said, it proved to be great experience. When you read synopsis of the book it will tell you absolutely nothing - it will even sound cliche - like, first book that comes to my mind by summary is Whiskey Beach ► STORY: Told from the Thomas' and Charlotte's point of view, this is a story of trust, betrayal and having faith in other people.
Thomas Bellweather's mother just remarried to a detective Stan. And everything was well, they married, they moved into his town Garretts Mill. But, just a while later, her own son finds her strangled in her bed. The lack of evidence, locked house and the fact that no one knows anything about Thomas, makes him a primary suspect in the city of cops. No one believes him. No one trusts him. And almost everyone is afraid of him. Charlotte Rooker is the only one who believes. And she tries to help - why would he kill his own mother? Not to mention she is a sister of a three cops who are generally overprotective. Two years ago, there was another murder - also strangulation but apparently, quite different from Thomas' case. And the victim was Charlotte's acquaintance. She needs some answers and Thomas needs to find out the truth - and why no one tries to find out the truth about her murder, and why they still keep blaming him and trying to find excuses to put him in jail for every single thing he does or says. Something weird is happening and the truth could lead them to their deaths. ► CHARACTERS: ◈ Thomas Bellweather (18 years) just wants to be left alone. Not literally, but what he needs is for people to stop judging him - he didn't kill his mother and he is certain the killer is still on the loose and he hates that no one will ever believe him about it. What's even worse - he doesn't know anyone in town, and it's small enough for everyone to know who he is and give him hard time instead. He tries to rely on Stan, his step father, but Stan has his own doubts as well. Everything that could ever go wrong, will always go wrong and the more it happens, he gets down more and more. The only light in his life that happened is Charlotte, the only one who tried to be kind to him in his darkest hours, but even that did not start out well - when she has 3 cop brothers who would rather throw him into a jail. Or worse. And worst of all, he is afraid. Afraid of the set ups, afraid of Charlotte's brothers, and even her sometimes, and afraid of what his life will turn out to be. Will Stan throw him out on the street? He doesn't have anywhere else to go. Will they find something planted as an evidence and lock him away forever? Even he could not find anything. Or they won't need any evidence at all and just throw him into jail if he doesn't move carefully and if he says anything wrong? He is getting tired of it. Death of his mother hurt him far worse then anything they do and say to him now, and keeping his feelings barely in from showing, he tries very hard not to have a break down. But worst of all is that feeling of guilt. If he wasn't sleeping, could he have stopped it? Could he not fail her?
◈ Charlotte Rooker is a overprotected little sister (17 years) and she hates it. Despite having Diabetes type I, she despises the fact that her whole life is controlled. Not to mention her brothers who would rather see her locked up in her own house than in vicinity of a supposed criminal. “I hate that, you know. I get enough people telling me how to dress, how to act, and especially when to eat. This is my life, okay? You don’t need to protect me.” She wants to believe in Thomas and she chases him around and tries to help him, but she only makes him even more afraid - he believes everything she does is a set up by her brothers to find excuse to throw him into prison once and for all. But, Charlotte does not, in fact, believe him 100%. Every time she meets him, she is afraid, she doubts. But she wants... wishes to believe that he is innocent and that he is unjustfuly turned into social pariah. He lets go of me to press the heel of one hand to his forehead. “I’ve never had an entire town hate me. I’ve never been so . . . alone.” He says it matter-of-factly, not self-pitying at all. The words aren’t empty, though. For an instant, the emotion in his gaze is so potent that it feels like it might leach into me and start a round of tears again. His eyes hold mine, and his voice is quiet and low. “I’ve never given a girl a reason to be afraid of me.” ◈ Stan is Thomas' step-father. He doesn't know what to believe and who to believe, but he tries to help Thomas as much as he can while also doubting him. After all, he doesn't know him that well. He knew his mother, but not him too. He loved Marie and he wanted to stay with her for the rest of his life. He is banned from investigation because it concerns his family, and that makes it harder for him. ◈ Charlotte's brothers Danny, Matt and Ben only want to keep Charlotte safe. No matter what. While Danny only keeps finding excuses, Matt and Ben are a bit better when it comes to accusing people out of the blue. Ben is also Char's favorite bro, and she also loves Matt... But Danny... she would rather hit him for being himself. ◈ Others: Charlotte's whole family, as well as the whole town, believes that Thomas is guilty - no matter that there is no evidence against him. But every single one of them is judgmental enough to not believe in anything. Nicole is the only one who believes, but she believes in her best friend's, Charlotte's, judgment instead. ► OVERALL: I have to be honest, Overall, great book, filled with right amount of angst I really needed lately, and with other things and definitely with human psyche, which I loved. Liked the characters, loved the second half of the book, and I really need more of this story. LIKED: ☑ story ☑ characters ☑ last 40% of the book, hell yes DISLIKED: ☒ the not so open but also open but also not open ending. I thought this was going to be stand alone, but i might be wrong and i actually need more books from this series. Final rating: 4.75/5 stars Final rating - for the whole series: 5/5 stars Spoiler free for those who never read the series and for those who had. Also c Final rating: 4.75/5 stars Final rating - for the whole series: 5/5 stars Spoiler free for those who never read the series and for those who had. Also check out reviews by Nastassja' & Nouf *LostinFantasy. I had a lot of fun discussing this book with them after finishing it! This whole series is just... amazing. Great. I loved almost every part of it (even when it made me cry concerning that one character I have been loving for being perfectly characterized in the role he was thrown into and i have not recovered from it yet). I hate reading ongoing series. I hate it. It's like waiting for the next movie of Star Trek. But I do understand writers - they need time to connect all lose ends, write a good plot and do a freaking good epilogue, because without it - if you write a book with abrupt end - you will gain nothing and all of your effort will be thrown in your face because it was not enough. Well, Schwab did it successfully. Perfectly long ending (not a mess of words where you can't follow what is happening anymore... as many authors tend to finish the series). Just... great. I must admit though, the beginning worried me, but soon after I realized that there is a lot that must happen and I just went with it. I have been waiting for this book for months and I was not disappointed. Also, have I told you all that I just like everyone? Such amazing characters. And I was so so glad to see more of Holland, who definitely didn't deserve to go through all of this, because just the amount of Holland's POVs in this book is AMAZING. I suffered reading them all the time, but I always knew there was more to that story. I was, in fact, bitter about something. MAJOR SPOILERS! (view spoiler)[Are you sure you want to read this? It is a big spoiler. (view spoiler)[ I hated that Holland died. It kind of gives a wrong message to people who were thrown into crazy situations and can't get out of them, and then to see someone who literally went through hell end up dead, well, it is disheartening. Especially since the author took such care and patience to explain more about his life before he was completely and utterly broken. Have I mentioned he is my fave? He was such a complex and unique character and I hate to see this happen to him. But one thing I did say to my friend when I discussed this with her: he wanted to die. He wanted to die free and away from suffering. And he died where he wanted and his death wasn't violent or cruel. It was peaceful and he was free. This is making me so emotional right now. Cries (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] Another thing is the fact that Rhy/Alucard's relationship was thrown to side, pointed out by my friend Nastassja, but considering I liked how it ended and considering how many things happened in the book, I kind of just... stopped thinking of those two (I didn't even think of it while writing this review, because i was so happy with how emotional it made me, i just forgot about it (shame on me)). I appreciated them as individuals and their roles in the plot, but.. there were scenes with them, so don't worry. But they weren't the main point of this story. ► OVERALL: For those who are looking whether to start this series or not, i suggest you to do it. Read this series. It has everything I didn't know I needed. It was amazing. And it's worth reading. (have I mentioned it's VERY VERY LONG?) ► REVIEW(S) RELATED TO THIS BOOK: ◈ A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1) ◈ A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic #2) ◈ A Conjuring of Light (Shades of Magic #3) ► BEFORE THE BOOK RELEASE: THIS IS GETTING TV SERIES!!!!!!!!! Final rating: 5/5 stars “To clever plans,” said Kell, toasting his brother. “And dashing princes.”Final rating: 5/5 stars “To clever plans,” said Kell, toasting his brother. “And dashing princes.” Wonderful, just wonderful. This book suffered the second-book-syndrome, the one I usually just call bridge book - - BUT MILDLY because it had a point. It was more focused on characters themselves and then the actual story, but no worry, the story is there too, just takes around 50% for it to spring up. It's like the first book - slow pacing, but filled with character development, and then - BUM - fast pacing here we go. I finished it in 2 days and I have never been more miserable. I just can't wait for it to continue. I need more of everyone, I need more of everything and this is the curse of ongoing series - when you actually love it, you will read all the books without stopping. And the third one is not yet here. Oh the suffering of the waiting. V.E. Schwab, if it is the last book, then make it a blast like these two. I laughed, I smiled, I sobbed, I cried. This book is a roller coaster of emotions, all of them, but it is also fun and amazing and cool. I wish goodreads had 10 star system - because 5 is not enough :/ Now, onto the story and characters. I believe the synopsis of the book itself tells you what the story is - it's very good and I don't know I can provide better story synopsis than that. So, I'm just gonna skip the story section. Sorry. Instead, I'll combine it with the characters. ► CHARACTERS: ◈ Kell: “Why am I the only one in this fucking world to be held accountable for my actions?” Four months have passed, and all the blame of past events was on him - and only him. While the people once loved him and admired him, now they are scared of him. He gave up smuggling - it caused him enough grief, and dedicated to training his powers. He desperately needs an outlet or he will go insane. Magic is tangled, so you must be smooth. But Holland's voice is not the only one which haunts him.... There is also Lila, who won't stop barging into his mind. You could still run, said a voice in his ear. It sounded suspiciously like Lila.(...) He wonders what happened to her, what is she doing. Delilah Bard. She did that, crept into his thoughts and robbed him of focus, like a thief. Which was exactly what she was. What she’d been, before he let her out of her world, and into his. Saints knew what—or where—she was these days, but in his mind she would always be the thief, stealing through at the most inopportune moments. And then, there is Rhy. My life is his life. His life is mine. Bring him back. He connected their lives in order to save him. Now they not only share life, they also share feelings, pleasure and pain. And the longer it goes, the stronger the bond becomes. A languorous smile. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” The bond between them is so strong, that they would do anything for each other, but the bond not only improves the situation with Rhy being alive instead of dead, but it put invisible shackles on Kell that he will never be able to be free from. Rhy is his damage control - if it wasn't for him, he would go insane. He is no ordinary magician and he can also use the forbidden bone magic. But just because he could, because it felt good to be in control, to be the strongest, to know that when it came down to it, he would be the one left standing. (...) But the bond with his so called parents is as strained as ever. They threw of their masks and have shown their true faces - after all, they only have one son. The worst thing of all is that Kell wanted to believe in them, wanted to believe they considered him son too, but it was all just a mask and it hurts him too much. First, he was constricted to the city only - such a vast world he would never visit. And now he is constantly under guard, followed everywhere, monitored and controlled. And he hates it. Hates how they treat him like he is only a belonging, someone's trinket... Kell used to feel like a possession. Now he felt like a prisoner. Kell is also plagued by nightmares, but he is not the only one. Rhy has them too. But when it came to nights and mornings and the dreams between, Rhy and Kell had quickly developed a silent understanding. After a bad night, one would give the other a small, consoling look, but it seemed crucially important that nothing actually be said about the nightmares that plagued them both. And now, to keep them form going mad, Rhy got a crazy idea: one that will put them both into trouble - but the worst thing of all, for him was that he is excited and happy, even though its madness, insanity, dangerous. He needs a way out from being controlled. Kell looked at his brother with a mixture of surprise and awe. “You know,” he said, taking up the mask, “if you can rule half as well as you can lie, you’re going to make an incredible king.” ◈ Rhy: It didn’t matter if it was true—their neighbors were always searching for a weakness, because ruling an empire was about strength. Which was really the image of strength. The Essen Tasch was the perfect pedestal for such a display. Rhy has a defense: everything he cannot do with magic, he can do with his charm and looks. The fact that he cannot use magic in full capacity pains him, and even more so that the only fact that he is royal saved him from being thrown away. The fact that some of his people hold against him. But, he is smart, quite capable to lead and charismatic. And then, there are things that bother him - the fact that he is the one who made even bigger mistake than Kell - afterall, if Kell didn't smuggle the stone, Astrid would still have had control over him. And he hates it. Hates how everyone blames Kell, when they should be blaming him too. “Father,” said Rhy, “if you don’t forgive Kell, you will lose him.” He most of all hates that his parents chose to forgive Rhy, but not Kell too. Kell nodded. “You wanted strength.” Not only that, but he also has twisted nightmares - most of them related to Kell. He hates how it makes him feel - the fact that he is now Kell's chain and that his brother is falling more and more into depression. So he finds a way out - he devises a plan which will help Kell get his outlet, and be free for a while. Even if it hurts him. Even if they could both be killed. Even if they are caught, things would be bad. But he won't give up. “Kell. My greatest fear in life isn’t dying. It’s being the source of someone else’s suffering. I know you feel trapped. I know I’m your cage. And I can’t—” His voice broke, and Kell could feel his brother’s pain, everything he tried to smother until dark and drown until morning. “You will do this,” said Rhy. “For me. For both of us.” They will always be there for each other, no matter what happens. Kell shook his head. “Come on, then,” he said, slinging his arm around the prince’s shoulder. “I’ll defend you.” {Rhy is honestly wonderful, with how thoughtful he is, how he cares about Kell, how he tries to kep them sane, and try to rule and show that he can be more than he is.} ◈ Lila: I am Delilah Bard, she thought. Pirate, thief, magician. Lila built quite a reputation for herself - 4 months ago, she had went to pursue her dreams. To be a pirate. But to be a pirate you first need a ship. And that is how she met Alucard, Captain of the Night Spire. “Ta vasar mas eran gast.” And that is how Lila became a part of the crew. And Alucard can help her - not only with Arnesian language, but also with magic. But from time to time, her thoughts wander to Kell. How would he react? What would he do? What is he doing? The flames spread until they coated the blades from hilt to tip, burning with golden light. She doesn't know what is happening to her. She didn't change - no, she is still reckless, holds grudges and is perfectly capable of taking lives if provoked. But then again... She wanted to know the truth. Who was Delilah Bard? What was she? The first was a question she thought she knew the answer to, but the second … she’d tried not to bother with it, but as Kell had pointed out so many times, she shouldn’t be here. Shouldn’t be alive, for that matter. She bent most of the rules. She broke the rest. And she wanted to know why. How. If she was just a blip in the universe, an anomaly, or something more. ◈ Alucard: “Then how did you escape?” Alucard is the captain of the ship Night Spire, charismatic, inspires loyalty and for Lila... mysterious. He is also a triad - he can use 3 elements of magic and is a mystery itself. At the other end of the table, Alucard boasted and cheered and drank with his crew, and Lila marveled at the way the man shifted to fit his environment. She knew how to adapt well enough, but Alucard knew how to transform. Back on the Spire, he was not only captain but king. Here at this table, surrounded by his men, he was one of them. Still the boss, always the boss, but not so far above the rest. This Alucard took pains to laugh as loud as Tav and flirt almost as much as Vasry, and slosh his ale like Olo, even though Lila had seen him fuss whenever she spilled water or wine in his cabin. And now, Alucard wants to participate in the Element Games. But that is not the only reason - there is someone he wants to meet again, even though they parted 3 years ago. Alucard is also person who wants to know as much as possible, manipulating people for information. He is also sarcastic and thoughtful. {Honestly, I really loved Alucard - he is interesting. Also, I saw that (view spoiler)[Alucard/Rhy (hide spoiler)] coming (because I spoiled myself, I have no one else to blame but myself).} ◈ The King of the White London and his follower Ojka: “You will be fine, Ojka, so long as you are strong enough.” After the fall of the Dane twins, a new King claimed the throne of the White London((view spoiler)[Holland (hide spoiler)]). He has a goal - restore the White London, so that it doesn't die, and so that his people won't suffer - he of all knows how cruel they were, and they all had enough of suffering. And with the outsider's help, he can do it. But at a cost, he needs to fulfill it or all will be lost. What do you want, (view spoiler)[Antari (hide spoiler)]? {Spoilers: (view spoiler)[I like him too much - I knew I was right about him - he only wanted to be free, and his world safe. But he just changed one master for another. The only way he can be free is either to die, or be free of everything, go anywhere and start again. He makes me really, really sad. I don't condone his actions, but he has a motive - and freedom is a big one when he had spent 8 years being a slave... but the worst thing is that he is slave again, but this time, willingly. And to make things even worse, he brought it upon himself because he wanted to 1) stay alive, 2) be free, 3) save his world.... I don't know, i really love how complex he is. He was a slave for 8 years - and he dreams of freedom, only for it to be taken from him again at the very end. (hide spoiler)]} Ojka, however, is his new and most loyal follower - and she believes that her (their) new King is perfect. She is dedicated, believes that she was chosen by him with a reason, and above all, she trusts him, no matter what he asks her to do. She believes that he can save them all. He had chosen her, and she would not let him down. Just like in the prophecies, their savior had come. And she would be there at his side. ◈ Others: Vis & Tolners and Staff & Hastra are new bodyguards of Rhy and Kell. The worse thing being that Staff blames Kell too, but Hastra is eager, hyperactive and cheerful. On the other hand, Vis and Tolners don't have the same bond Rhy shared with Gen and Parrish. And so on and on... ► OVERALL: Fantastic sequel, I loved every moment of it, every page of it. And then, there is that cliffhanger. Save yourself the trouble and don't read it until the next book. I'm not fond of cliffhangers, especially when the series is ongoing. But, this was masterpiece cliffhanger, and not just on 1 side, but 2 sides (aka two cliffhangers). To be honest, this cliffhanger is how I decided that this should be my priority (among my friend's reviews) so I knew in advance (in first book already) who is gonna make chaos. But that didn't stop me, in fact, it only made me eager to read more. In any case, you have been warned. If you hate cliffhangers, don't read yet. Also, about the cliffie, I understand (view spoiler)[ why he went with Ojka - he desperately wanted to get away, anywhere, just to be anywhere else, and she was there, but instead he went into a trap (hide spoiler)]...

It was great. I enjoyed it, it had a perfect amount of angst (yes, if you have followed my reviews for a while, you would notice I love angsty things to read) and it was quite emotional with a killer ending. And, the best of all, there were so many parts that made me smile, despite the sorrowful time our main characters are forced in. If you plan to read this series, spare yourself torture of waiting and read after the next one is out. With the luck we have, third might end with an ever worse cliffhanger. But I am glad to know that author plans to publish the next book very soon! Which is fantastic because I need the next one like I need air. Loved the plot twists though, and when I was certain I had figured something out, I didn't even think about the other options and I even felt betrayed at one point until the next plot twist kicked in. Well done! Once again, the writing was so damn beautiful and lovely, and there were many quotes I had to highlight and put in my review but I will put some of them under spoiler for reasons. The emotional struggles the characters face in this book is great, and I also loved the focus on side characters - especially Larel and Daniel and the others, and I loved that we found more about certain relationships and we also have new characters, maybe even key players introduced. Thankfully, we also have a map of the world now, so it's much easier to figure out what is where. This one has also much more action than Air Awakens and it was great to see that, and there was also more information on Bonds, Joining, magic in general. What i loved in these books is that women going to war here - being sorcerers or not - is quite normal. So, we get to read about kickass women. I'm still shocked over that cliffhanger though... ► STORY: In short: After the Senate and Emperor made their decision that will most likely kill Vhalla earlier than she thought, she is sent to the front as soon as the verdict was passed. Having no time to adjust herself for the inevitable, she is at least relieved to see her friends Fritz and Larel as the new recruits in the army of sorcerers. In the end, she must learn how to fight and how to stay alive, how to deal with Prince Aldrik, Emperor and Baldair, and how to accept what she had become and what her choices are. {More will be written in the character section}. ► CHARACTERS: ☀ Vhalla Yarl is not at her best - she only just found the Empire is sending her to war to die. Being the last Windwalker in the world, she is still not accustomed to her own magic and she is in the state of panic - how will she survive this? “Vhalla Yarl, blessed bird of the East. The one who can soar without wings. The first chick to fly the cage. The first to return to our land.” She is plagued by nightmares, she sees her friend dying over and over again and can be easily triggered. Vhalla is now seen by royalty, or actually Senate and Emperor as their property and the only way she can get her freedom back is if she brings them victory. “You’re not someone to live in darkness or sorrow.” Larel reclined on the bed, inviting Vhalla to do the same. “You’re a light that can shine brighter than even the sun.” {Vhalla goes through a lot in this book - she is scared, she panics, she is terrified of dying this way. She is happy that she can still rely on her friends Larel and Fritz, and she is happy when she sees Daniel and Craig with her as well. What she needs is reassurance she will go through this alive and hope. And then there is also Aldrik - she finds herself more and more entranced by him, but she tries to figure out if Aldrik feels the same.} “I think,” she started softly, “that I like playing with fire.” ☀ Prince Aldrik's character was established at the end of the last book. Aldrik's only fault is his fear of trusting in the people and being honest to them. And sometimes, that can lead to lot of misunderstandings. He tries his best to help Vhalla by helping her train using her magic, and explaining how their bond works and how magic can save her life. “I just need to really understand what it’s like to have someone whom-whom I trust.” Aldrik avoided her gaze, scowling at himself. “Someone who knows my dark truths and who isn’t seeking something from me or is trying to use something against me.” {In the first book it was hard to see his true character. But in this one, we see him open up more than ever, see his though and even know more about his past and what made him this way. He easily became one of my favorite characters but I have to admit he had me scared there, and even disappointed one time, but when it was all cleared up I was able to breathe again. You know the term Problematic Fave? You are looking at one of it's definitions. } “You know your place in life, your duty to your people.” Vhalla didn’t like where Lord Ophain was headed with his logic. “Someday you will be Emperor and no one will be able to question your decisions. No one will question them if they feel that your law comes from a place of honor, sensibility, and compassion. The crown is a heavy burden and you will have to make choices between your wants and your Empire.” ☀ Prince Baldair is back in all his glory... and his warnings. He doesn't really trust Aldrik, and like everyone else, he is too quick to judge him - without even trying to understand him. But he cares of other people. He cares about his own guard, he cares about his people, he cares about Vhalla. {While he might have some feelings for Vhalla, he doesn't show it much. But he is willing to help and he wants to keep her safe and sound no matter what. His relationship with Aldrik is very complicated and I hope to see more of it later on. There is one thing people without siblings don't understand. Life is different when you have one, or two, or more. You have the person that is closest to you and if your relationship is right, you have the most amazing ally in the world. Your sibling is your anchor, your casket of secrets, your treasure. But the bond between Aldrik and Baldair is not easily mended. While Aldrik was shunned from the world, Baldair is welcomed by it and is loved by people.} “They love me because I never have to heap punishments upon them, or carry out executions, or levy taxes. I host parties and open casks of wine.” Baldair shook his head. “They don’t like him because Aldrik will be a fair ruler. He doesn’t care about being loved, he cares about doing what’s right.” ☀ Larel and Fritz decided to go with Vhalla to the war, so they wouldn't leave her alone - they know that the only person she can rely on is Prince Aldrik, but he is not the one who can stay with her all the time, only the two of them. So, deciding that is for the best, they venture forth as new recruits in the army in order to make her stay sane and safe. {I was surprised to see Larel talking about her life - I have not expected it but it was surprising... and painful. And in this book we have a clear view on Aldrik's and Larel's relationship (view spoiler)[ the two of them being like siblings (hide spoiler)] and it was nice to know and read about. Larel is one of my favorites, she is kind, thoughtful and wonderful person who cares about the others.
As for Fritz: he was wonderful as well. Careful, lovely, funny, amazing. Wonderful. I really, really want more scenes with him. His enthusiasm and cheerfulness make me smile and he is just too adorable. Fritz squeaked. He seemed to vibrate with excitement. “Tell—us—everything.” He punctuated his words, making each a demand. He cares about Vhalla and he is there to support her and stay with her. “So then, if you didn’t share his bed ... what did you do?” Fritz seemed genuinely confused. Way too adorkable.} ☀ Daniel and Craig , the guards that guarded her cell in the first book, are in the army as well. But not as ordinary soldiers, but as members of the Golden Guard, the personal guard of Prince Baldair. And they are happy as well as sad to see Vhalla near them. {Daniel's character is more explored than Craig's - meaning that he appeared more than the other. Daniel is interesting and nice guy who wants to help and teach and be there when he is needed and the two of them started caring about Vhalla ever since they saw her broken and now want nothing more than help her with dealing with this.} ☀ Elecia is a mysterious woman and Groundbreaker who is somewhat close to Aldrik - they know each other, but Vhalla is confused of their relationship. And she knows some things about Vhalla as well. I'll leave her mystery to the future readers. ☽ Relationships: I really enjoyed reading about Vhalla and Aldrik, most of the time, their interactions made me smile. I have so many quotes that I have highlighted only for the sake of it. Some of my favorite quotes: [be warned, some of them contain spoilers]. (view spoiler)[ “I wish I could be better comfort to you,” he murmured softly.(...) ● ● ● “Are you not a lady?” he asked. ● ● ● “Oh yes, by the way, the Crown Prince Aldrik gave me a pillow. That’s normal right?” Vhalla rolled her eyes. ● ● ● “I love you,” he repeated, a determined fire lighting his eyes. “It is one of the worst things I could ever do,” Aldrik confessed. “I swear to the Mother, I have tried not to damn you with it. But you’re a rather persistent, beautiful presence in my life. And, for once, the silver-tongued prince is tired of pretending.” ● ● ● “If you want to make the widely accepted appropriate decision, then leave now, have mercy and end this before you entice me further. Because I promise, this will never be easy—for either of us—and I refuse to love you halfway.” ● ● ● “You are?” Fritz asked, dumbstruck. Vhalla could only blush. “By the Mother, this is the most insane thing I’ve ever heard of ! Prince Aldrik? The Fire Lord? The black prince? He whose temper is short and his wrath is long?” ● ● ● “Vhalla, I need her in so many ways, Mother help me,” Aldrik groaned. “I need her as my redemption, I need her kindness, I need her forgiveness, I need her smiles, I need her humanity, I need her ignorance, I need her innocence, and, yes ... Mother Sun, yes, I need her as a man.” ● ● ● It was Vhalla’s turn to laugh. “The East doesn’t really have your Southern notions of a woman’s virgin blood. Yes, one man.” ● ● ● Aldrik tapped her chin, summoning her attention. “Good. It’s been better than good.” He shook his head. “I can’t even ... form sentences. This, you and I, my being pushed beyond the personal hell I built for myself, has been good. I’ve felt more like a man in the past months-weeks, in the past days being with you, than I have in years. As though I can enjoy things without—guilt. Good isn’t even the right word to say for it. You’ve let me be the person I always wished I could be and, I ...” ● ● ● “My Vhalla, my lady, my love.” His words smoothed away the rough edges of her heart. “You make me do things far more dangerous than dream. You make me hope, you make me want.” He sighed a sound that was part bliss and part pain. “Mother, I have yet to discover if you will be my salvation or my demise.” ● ● ● “I love him.” Vhalla shook again, the words bringing a fresh batch of tears to her eyes. “I love him, but I am only death. I am death to everyone I love. Someday I will be the death of him.” (hide spoiler)] I also loved the other relationships and friendships and how it was done, and I wish there was more interaction between Larel and Fritz, because the two of them are too adorable together: Larel’s fist smashed through Fritz’s face, and his body dissolved in a puff of smoke. The Western woman turned with a groan. Vhalla caught a shift in the light behind her. There was a flash of ice and Fritz faded back to sight, holding an ice dagger at Larel’s throat. I also wish there were more interactions between Larel and Aldrik - them being friends is only mentioned and they don't really interact. We find out their relationship through stories and flashbacks but I needed more. I was also surprised to find out about the ages of the characters. I was not sure before, but now i think I am not wrong about Aldrik being 24, Vhalla 18, Baldair 21, and Larel 23? I always love to find out about the ages of the characters, it makes it always so interesting for me. ► OVERALL: Well done and strong sequel, even though there is not much happening in the book in the beginning, but it was worth reading and I felt many things. What I love here the most is not the story, nor the worldbuilding, but the amazing characters and their struggles. I need Aldrik like I need Air, hahahahah.... And that cover... that beautiful cover... I am in love... Wonderful, just wonderful and majestic. (Just look at Aldrik, his fabulous hair and armor!)
