Unless RJB wants the weirdest ending ever. I don't know how I feel about that tbh, I like duologies especially if it's not high/epic fantasy, I think you can tell a story in 2 books and not need to go for more.
Well despite all that, this was good, really good and I say this about all RJB books but I love them, he writes some very interesting concepts and characters and knows how to keep you hooked up till the end. I was definitely slumping a bit after just finishing Gardens of the Moon and this was the perfect cure, okay maybe just shy from perfect but it was nice to reunite with these characters and this world, mind you, I don't completely love this, it has some flaws that in my opinion prevented this from being a favorite but to I am happy I read this.
I love the magic in this series but I really wish I had a firmer grasp on it, the idea behind it is really interesting and I like how the characters struggle with it sometimes but also they almost always succeed and the reason I think is because it's not a hard enough magic system, it allows you some room to play with it and for characters to find solutions easily. I wish there were more rules to the magic so I can understand it better and so the characters can struggle more, because I'm that guy :)
I also didn't like the time jump between books one and two for one reason and one reason only and that is the relationship between characters seems to have developed without me witnessing it especially the romance and that's sad. I really liked how slow things were in book one and hoped they start evolving more in this book but we start with everything already in place and the characters are comfortable with each other. It's not bad but I'm a bit mad thinking oh what could've been and was not.
The turns and twists in this book were amazing, the morally grey characters alone are a good reason to pick this!
And lastly, I wish the fight scenes were cooler! I don't know how to do that but I have a genuine problem here, I just do not feel on the edge of my seat whenever there's a fight, I mean the world is at stake here but when two are fighting it just feels to me like a random street fight. To be fair tho, I don't think this is a problem with this book, it's me reading very good fight scenes and missing that kind of action.
And that's all ladies and gentlemen, read Robert Jackson Bennet for clear skin! Probably not, it most likely will give you wrinkles because you need to do some thinking but good wrinkles....more
