I'm so glad to be finished. I must admit, there were moments through this entire book that were fantastic. Whether it was (view spoiler)[Burrich's talk about his alcoholism and manhood, the reunion of the Fool and Fitz, Kettricken's perseverance and grief, Molly and Burrich's love and how it affected Fitz, the final Dragon waking sequence was awesome and I DON'T LIKE DRAGONS (hide spoiler)]. All those were truly very impactful moments.
But.
This book did not need to be 850 pages long. This trilogy did not need to be this long. The writing style, despite being very well crafted, does not suit my personal taste at all. The main character, although I finally understood the extent of his unreliable narration, has royally pissed me off for the best 3 books.
I'm glad I finished this trilogy and could form an opinion on it... I will continue on to Liveship Traders early next year probably... but if I don't like it substantially more, that will be the end of my ROTE journey. ...more
For the first time the sparseness in his prose has had a detrimental effect on my experience with the book (though I still disagree with people saying his prose is wholly sparse). I have some thoughts that I'm saving for the video, but I'm excited to watch the movieeee :)...more
Wow. I'm so thoroughly impressed by this book. What an achievement in literature. Especially that ending!?!? It makes me want to go reread the book again in a different light. In general, I think McCarthy books should be reread.
I need to come back to this one. I will after I have read more: Moby Dick, the Golden Fleece, essays about Blood Meridian itself. Apparently Harold Bloom wrote about BM and I need to know what he thought abt it. Yeah wow.
Also also, ratings are so arbitrary. How can you even rate a book like this? ...more
This book is definitely overhated. The ending was once again solid!! And it is very clearly a fairytale. A good one to read to young ones (with minor censorship... don't want 7yr old knowing reading about flaccid members). I wonder how I will think about this one in retrospect as I continue through to the Tower :)...more
What the fxck. I went into it knowing nothing. ... All I'm gonna say is this. I never thought that a human being would be able to write something as vile as this. It's the most disturbing fxcked up thing I've ever read.
I don't think anything I've ever read qualifies as horror next to this book. My brain is fried. I actively stressed. Never –I repeat– NEVER have I had sp intense palpitations and anxiety while reading such that I had to stop. I can't believe this exists....more
