I would’ve liked a bit more worldbuilding, since I was still a little confused about the setting and whatnot by the time I finished, but I liked the characters a lot.
My favorite thing about this was undoubtedly the OCD rep, since it’s fairly similar to my own experience with OCD and fit with the story really well (it totally makes sense that someone with powers would obsess about hurting others in that way as well as the more “ordinary” ways).
Ultimately, this was a cute—if a bit too short and underdeveloped for my liking—and I’d recommend it for people looking for F/F speculative fiction and/or good representations of OCD.

I really liked this, but it would be so much stronger with some more time spent to developing the plot and characters. Still, I’m eager to read more set in this world because I do love how C.M. Spivey writes fantasy.

3.5 stars, rounded up because I loved the characters.

The beginning of this was a bit rocky and could've used another round of edits in my opinion, but I'm glad I stuck it out because overall, this was a delightful book. It has a slower, looser plot than what I normally read, but the cast of characters kept me engaged through the entire thing. The worldbuilding was excellent too, and I liked seeing the ways magic is used alongside technology, especially with respect to things like transit and the Archive. Byrd was such a fun character to follow along, and I really loved Maisie and Simone as well. I always love when a character's love interest isn't the only person who's important to them, and those friendships were a big part of what made me enjoy this book.
There were some clunky and confusing sentences throughout (enough that I noticed and wanted to edit, but not so many that I contemplated putting the book down because of it), but the descriptions of everything were a delight, especially the outfits. I'm someone who always notices what people are wearing, so I loved that those details were included.
The end felt a little rushed and I think there could've been more setup for things about Byrd's identity, but overall, this was a lovely read with a really cool setting and I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series.
I received an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review....more
