What would happen if the confusing labyrinth of an Ikea created wormholes to other dimensions? Follow the tale of love lost when Ava and Jules travel to find a customer who has wandered through one such wormhole. Encountering new lands with chairs that aren't as they seem, hives filled with clones protecting "Mother", and meeting a submarine captain. Could be fun to see where this series goes....more
I quest once again for the Dark Tower. This is my fourth time on this quest. I listened to this story this time around. And, picking up where The GunsI quest once again for the Dark Tower. This is my fourth time on this quest. I listened to this story this time around. And, picking up where The Gunslinger left off, we get to meet Roland's Ka-tet.
Immediately, our hero is thrust into danger by waking on a beach at dusk, with the Lobstrositites Did-a-chumming toward him. Partial loss of his hand, as well as a now raging infection lead us into the story.
(view spoiler)[We meet the Prisoner, Eddie Dean, the Heroine Junkie, pulling drugs through US Customs. He is pulled out of his world in a drug induced state to Roland's, a change that is stark compared to New York of the 1980s to say the least. Eddie wrestles with his desire to go back to NY and his desire to kill Roland, something that is slowly happening with blood poisoning already.
Next we meet The Lady of the Shadows, Detta Walker/Odetta Holmes, two women in one body, one body without legs below the knees. A new challenge arises, as Detta Walker emerges as a violent women who wants nothing more than to kill the two white men on the beach. The other, the soft spoken rich black woman that Roland first encountered. The problem - neither knows about the other.
As Roland gets sicker we encounter the third, The Pusher. Entering the mind of Jack Mort, Roland takes over and quests through NY to find what he needs, gun ammo and antibiotics. As he is doing this Detta is back in Roland's world, plotting the death of he and Eddie, just as the Lobstrosities emerge from the Western Sea, Roland uses Mort to make Detta/Odetta meet, creating Susannah Dean. I really enjoy this book every time I read it. Roland's commitment to the Tower, his knowledge that each person drawn will help him in his quest, and his knowledge that he may get them killed pulls at the reader. Roland's conflict is felt throughout the story, and grows as the series continues. What King does so well is the development of character. Eddie, the junkie, immediately imparts a vision of a person, and even as this story continues, we see Eddie's growth as a character, further developed later on. Even more, King's ability to take an everyday person like Eddie, but for the grace of god go we, and drop him into an abnormal situation to see how he reacts. It is that storytelling that pushes the Tower to the next level. The conclusion of this story, much like its predecessor, leaves you wondering what will happen to the three travelers in search of the Tower.

A depressing story about a teenager that disappears one day and the devastation to her mother brought on by that disappearance. I'll try not to spoil A depressing story about a teenager that disappears one day and the devastation to her mother brought on by that disappearance. I'll try not to spoil the book, essentially, one day, Laurel gets news that they found some things that belonged to her daughter, Ellie, backpack, laptop, etc. The police also found remains. This provides enough closure for Laurel, that she starts waking back up to a reality that she still had two remaining children. The story unfolds as she meets a handsome and charming man, and his daughter. After meeting the daughter and hearing more about Mr. Charmin's past she begins to piece together the story and find out what really happened to her daughter.
I enjoyed the story, it is dark and twisted, and makes you realize that people like this exist in this world. There aren't any twists, this book spells out what is happening early on, but you want to keep reading and to find out the gruesome details. I found my self rooting for Laurel to find happiness even when she discovered the truth of her Ellie's disappearance. Overall, it was a good book, has you hooked to the end, but still a sad story overall....more
