Sin embargo, su tarea final no es fácil. A Coriolanus se le asigna el más menospreciado de los tributos, la chica del Distrito 12, un aparente insulto. Sin embargo, cuando Lucy Gray hace una entrada explosiva durante su cosecha, Coriolanus intuye una manera de convertir este insulto en una oportunidad. A medida que se acerca el momento de los juegos, Coriolanus se siente extrañamente atraído por Lucy Gray, deseando su supervivencia por razones distintas a su propio avance profesional. Aunque aquí usa un estilo de tiempo pasado en tercera persona más estándar, en lugar de la primera persona presente en la trilogía principal, todas las cosas que hicieron que los libros de Collins fueran tan fáciles de leer han vuelto a estar vigentes. Un don para las descripciones sobrias, que aún nos ponen en contacto con el mundo y el lugar de sus protagonistas en él, la capacidad de transmitir mucha información de manera naturalista a través de un único punto de vista, un elenco secundario reconocible al instante y un don para la exactitud, una medición de la tensión que da a los libros un ritmo constante y dinámico. Por supuesto, el estilo no es nada sin mundo o personajes, y es en el personaje de Snow donde Collins realmente sobresale.
Hacer precuelas con un villano de la serie principal como protagonista es muy difícil de lograr. Después de todo, si el villano es un personaje completamente antipático, ¿cómo puede una historia sobre cómo llegó a donde está mantener el interés del lector? Por otro lado, si el villano es demasiado comprensivo, entonces su traumática caída en la villanía termina pareciendo trillada e insatisfactoria. Tampoco ayuda que, aunque el presidente Snow había servido como una destilación de todos los males del Capitolio en un paquete color de rosa para que Katniss apuntara su odio (y sus flechas), su personalidad o historia no parecían demasiado distintas al compararlas con personajes como Lord Voldemort o Darth Vader.
Collins, sin embargo, no convierte a Snow en un personaje comprensivo o antipático, sino ambas cosas. Snow no es (como la gente podría esperar) simplemente un mocoso rico y mimado. Hay veces, como cuando vemos su amor por su dulce prima Tigris, o sus circunstancias absolutamente desesperadas, en las que sentimos lástima por él; incluso nos encontramos de su lado cuando se enfrenta a personas bastante desagradables. Sin embargo, a pesar de todo eso, Collins no nos deja olvidar por completo dónde terminará la historia de Snow, con sus ocasionales ataques de desprecio por quienes lo rodean, incluso aquellos que lo consideran un amigo, y su autoritario sentido de orgullo familiar. Estos sentimientos no son menos complejos que en su relación con Lucy Grey, el pájaro cantor del título del libro.
Lucy Gray podría haber vuelto a ser otra Katniss, una chica dura del Distrito 12 quien no se ha visto afectada por una vida difícil. Sin embargo, Collins hace de Lucy Gray una persona por derecho propio. Lucy Gray, una artista teatral con un claro interés en su apariencia personal e incluso con una vena vengativa, además de su propia historia y cultura (como se ve en su doble nombre), sigue siendo un personaje tan complejo como Snow y un contraste perfecto para la historia, especialmente considerando que, aunque sabemos que Snow sobrevive a los décimos Juegos del Hambre, no se puede decir lo mismo de Lucy Grey.
Collins también es extremadamente inteligente en el cambio de actitud de Coriolanus hacia Lucy Grey. A veces simplemente la desprecia, a veces la considera sólo una herramienta en sus planes. Hay momentos en los que parece genuinamente enamorado de ella, pero también hay momentos en que ese amor se desvía preocupantemente hacia lo posesivo, mientras que a veces parece genuinamente puro, incluso tentador con indicios de lo que Coriolanus podría haber sido.
Esta complejidad tampoco se limita a los personajes principales. Dada la posición de Snow en la historia, vemos menos tributos; a pesar de todo, todavía causan una impresión, y algunos de ellos, como el misterioso Reaper, aún logran sentirse casi tan memorables como Kato o Rue. Todos los compañeros mentores de Snow tienen una compleja gama de personalidades y acciones que van desde el compasivo y franco Sejanus, la amable aunque susceptible Clemensia y la dura Livia, cada uno con su propio conjunto de alianzas políticas. Otro problema con las precuelas es que, dado que obviamente se escribieron en una fecha posterior y el autor pretende que sean leídas después de la serie principal, el mundo en el que se desarrollan es, por supuesto, familiar, y la mayor parte de lo que aprendemos es histórico. Este no es el reluciente y desenfrenado Capitolio de la época de Katniss, sino una ciudad sombría y llena de cráteres, todavía a la sombra de la guerra. A pesar del dominio absoluto del Capitolio sobre los distritos, los alimentos y los recursos siguen siendo escasos, y la tecnología es un bien preciado. Sin embargo, Collins tampoco descuida sus responsabilidades en la precuela, mostrándonos de dónde provienen varias tradiciones del Capitolio y los Juegos; de hecho, incluso el exceso de la cultura del Capitolio que se ve en la serie principal es casi una reacción adversa al estado de las cosas en la precuela.
Collins nunca ha tenido miedo de abordar grandes cuestiones. Para desahogarse, Emika se consuela en Warcross, el juego de rol en línea de renombre internacional que lleva la realidad aumentada al siguiente nivel. Warcross no es un juego en línea cualquiera; es un mundo alternativo que se asienta sobre el nuestro y está tan arraigado en la vida de cada persona que da forma a todas las interacciones económicas y sociales. Y también es el hogar de un campeonato anual de equipos internacionales, con un gran premio multimillonario.
Emika inicia sesión en Warcross una fatídica noche con la idea de ejecutar un par de trucos para robar algunos poderes de un equipo en las primeras rondas de la competencia y, accidentalmente, hace lo imposible. Su truco revela una falla en el ecosistema de Warcross que accidentalmente hace que Emika participe en la acción de las preliminares del campeonato, lo que hace que su avatar sea visible para el resto del mundo. De la noche a la mañana, Emika se convierte en la leyenda de los tabloides (¿quién es Emika Chen?) y se gana la atención de Hideo Tanaka, el joven genio e inventor de Warcross. El primer y más notable aspecto de Warcross es el propio nombre del juego. El mundo de Emika es distópico, con fuerzas policiales corruptas, fuertes barreras para acceder a trabajos respetables y casi imposible para cualquiera que tenga antecedentes penales o no tenga dinero para navegar por la red. Para escapar de la lúgubre miseria de la vida cotidiana en un centro superpoblado como Nueva York, ricos y pobres por igual se ponen unas gafas y unos auriculares y se conectan a Warcross, donde todo es más limpio, mejor y más feliz. Dentro del juego, cualquiera puede acumular puntos de experiencia, explorar e incluso construir nuevas capas de realidad. Muchos, como la compañera de cuarto de Emika, eligen perderse en esta realidad en oposición al mundo real.
Suena como un entorno privilegiado para una acción de piratería distópica seria, ¿verdad? En este sentido, la paranoia del fundador de Warcross y su deseo de contratar a Emika tienen mucho sentido: en un mundo donde todos están conectados a una sola plataforma, las brechas de seguridad podrían comprometer no solo el futuro financiero de la empresa, sino también la integridad de todo un ecosistema socioeconómico. Warcross da una mirada muy microscópica a estos sistemas interrelacionados y hace todo lo posible para describir un conjunto muy limitado de variables y jugadores; esta no es una epopeya cyberpunk radical. Pero no intenta ni necesita serlo. Basta decir que, desde la perspectiva de la construcción del mundo, esta versión de un mundo futurista cuya población depende por completo de una tecnología escapista no está muy lejos de un mundo con Wi-Fi gratuito y una creciente dependencia de las pantallas.
Los otros factores que Warcross tiene a su favor son sus diversos personajes y algunas tramas hábiles y alegremente ridículas. Hay un montón de secuencias de batalla en entornos virtuales imaginarios, incluida una batalla obligatoria de robots meca, en las que Emika tiene que aprender en su trabajo como arquitecta y luchadora. Todo esto es increíble, e igualmente asombrosos son los personajes principales del libro. La narradora, Emika, es una hacker con cabello de arcoíris y patineta eléctrica, ferozmente independiente y dispuesta a correr grandes riesgos para obtener un gran día de pago. Y es a la vez una huérfana desafortunada con un legado familiar de deudas, pero ella es más que la suma de estas partes. Se enfrenta a algunas decisiones difíciles, especialmente por el tercer acto crítico de la novela, y resulta ser un personaje mucho más matizado de lo que parece inicialmente.
Más allá de Emika, está el hecho de que todos son diversos en este mundo y simplemente se aceptan tal como son: el capitán del equipo de Emika está en una silla de ruedas (lo que no le impide ser el líder de combate y gestión del equipo) y la mayoría de los personajes principales no son caucásicos.
Dicho esto, hay un elemento de romance instantáneo que se siente trillado e innecesario, aunque la forma en que las cosas se desarrollan y toman un giro lo hacen más llevadero. Del mismo modo, el giro al final de Warcross no es del todo inesperado, y todo se siente un poco apresurado y obvio. Pero, incluso cuando sabemos que se avecina un gran giro, eso no necesariamente resta valor a la experiencia, y el giro de trama de Warcross es cinemático y divertido.
Marie Lu ha admitido que Warcross es una carta de amor que rinde homenaje a todas sus cosas favoritas. Este libro es una experiencia rica en colores y sumamente intensa. Aunque se centra en descubrir secretos ocultos dentro de un videojuego, el crecimiento de Emika a lo largo de la historia nos enseña mucho sobre cómo comprender las circunstancias de los demás y ver las cosas en una perspectiva más amplia.

Ambas historias cuentan con la aplicación ficticia Muerte Súbita, que puede predecir el día en que una persona va a morir. Ambas historias siguen a dos adolescentes unidos en un punto de inflexión crítico. Sin embargo, quizás lo que más comparten los dos libros es su creencia en el poder curativo del amor, su interminable sentido de esperanza y la pura vitalidad de la vida que salta de las páginas, una ironía que no se pierde, dado que estas historias se centran tanto en la muerte.
Teniendo lugar años antes de la historia de Rufus y Mateo en “Al Final Mueren los Dos”, este libro comienza la noche antes de que Muerte Súbita se publique. Mientras la gente de todo Estados Unidos espera el lanzamiento con una mezcla de emoción, inquietud, cautela y escepticismo, dos chicos se unen a la multitud en Times Square para ver lo que se convertirá en un momento significativo en la historia. Uno de ellos está programado para morir en las próximas veinticuatro horas, y el otro está decidido a hacer que ese último día cuente. Y así, de manera similar a cómo se desarrolló la historia de Rufus y Mateo, dos chicos que eran extraños antes de que Muerte Súbita desarraigara sus mundos, pueden pasar juntos un día que les cambiará la vida, uno que ninguno olvidará jamás.
Lo primero que debemos saber cuando comenzamos a leer este libro es que está diseñado para rompernos el corazón. Es esencial el conocimiento de que la historia trata algunos temas importantes más allá de la muerte. Explora la sexualidad, la homofobia, el abuso doméstico, el duelo y el trauma, mostrando estos temas a través de los ojos de sus dos personajes centrales, así como también las perspectivas de varios personajes periféricos. Es esta capacidad de ver los eventos desde diferentes ángulos lo que le da a la historia una sensación tan transitoria. Al igual que en la vida real, los personajes se rozan unos a otros, tocando los mundos de los demás en formas grandes y pequeñas, a veces sin siquiera saberlo. Y hay algo muy alentador en la idea de que una persona puede cambiar la vida de alguien con la más mínima de las acciones.
Y de eso se trata realmente esta novela: el impacto que las personas tienen entre sí y cómo la vida puede cambiar en un momento fugaz, por lo que ésta debe vivirse y celebrarse al máximo. La historia está teñida de una dulzura amarga que perdura en cada página. Para llegar a algún tipo de final feliz con este libro, primero tiene que haber una tragedia. Eso no impedirá que como lectores nos apresuremos a leer las páginas con la esperanza de que suceda algo milagroso que salve la vida de ambos adolescentes. Pero si ya hemos leído el libro que inició el viaje de Muerte Súbita, “Al Final Mueren los Dos”, sabremos que Silvera no endulza la muerte ni ofrece un milagro de última hora. Así no funciona la vida, y tampoco esta historia.
La ciudad de Nueva York vuelve a ser el escenario perfecto para una historia así. Es un lugar muy diverso y rebosante de vida, pero también plantea una serie de amenazas potenciales para el dúo central del libro. Sería mucho más fácil para Orion y Valentino envolverse en plástico de burbujas en los confines de sus habitaciones, pero quieren explorar la ciudad juntos mientras puedan. A través de ellos, como lectores podemos experimentar estos pequeños fragmentos de Nueva York: la belleza, el caos y la naturaleza impredecible de tantas personas que viven tan juntas.
Ambientada siete años antes de la novela original, funciona perfectamente de forma independiente, pero hay un nivel adicional de diversión en este libro que solo apreciaremos los lectores familiarizados con “Al Final Mueren los Dos”. Como las referencias a personajes que ya conocemos y amamos. La historia se registra con Rufus y Mateo cuando eran niños, así como con una adolescente Dalma, creadora de la aplicación “Último Amigo” que los une. Ver cómo sus vidas chocaron tan pronto le da un mayor significado a ambos libros.
Esta es una historia tierna, triste, esperanzadora y juvenil que merece tanto amor como su antecesora.

Entrelazando tragedias contemporáneas e históricas de la pandemia del COVID-19, la Primera Guerra Mundial y el pronóstico futurista de una posible falla tecnológica, Mandel investiga el apocalipsis no como una fuente de pánico masivo sino como una serie de rupturas en vidas individuales. La episodicidad de este método, como se refleja en la estructura narrativa múltiple en primera persona, es necesaria tanto por el trato de la novela con el tiempo estructurado no linealmente, como por sus esfuerzos por crear personajes discretos y reconocibles.
Aunque tal vez ningún resumen le haría justicia a la historia en sí, el esquema general de la novela es el siguiente: en el siglo XXII, los humanos han pasado por múltiples reubicaciones desde las colonias lunares a otras colonias planetarias debido a nuestra repetida manía de acabar con los recursos naturales de la geografía. El Instituto del Tiempo, el establecimiento que desarrolló la técnica del viaje en el tiempo y que ahora se dedica a mantener la integridad de las líneas del tiempo, emplea a Gaspery-Jacques (cuya hermana Zoe es una física que también trabaja para el Instituto del Tiempo) para investigar una anomalía.
Zoe ve esta corrupción como una posible indicación de la verdad de la hipótesis que establece que todas las personas podríamos estar viviendo en una simulación. Aunque se le advierte constantemente sobre no interrumpir las líneas de tiempo y dejar que las cosas sucedan como deben ser, Gaspery-Jacques notifica a Olive Llewellyn, una autora del siglo XXIII, sobre la pandemia inminente que originalmente le habría quitado la vida. De manera similar, Gaspery-Jacques luego entrevista a Edwin, un veterano de la Primera Guerra Mundial y físicamente discapacitado, y le asegura que su momento de "alucinación" en Canadá, cuyo informe resulta en que Edwin sea enviado al manicomio, no fue un momento de alucinación después de todo.

Esto se puede atribuir mejor a cómo la novela elige establecer cada personaje: en particular, a través del método poco común de la asociación ocupacional. Al centrarse en las carreras como una fuente importante de insatisfacción, Mandel lleva la indagación del libro fuera de él: parte de la motivación para dudar de la existencia de lo “real” (cualquiera que sea su significado) es la abrumadora obsesión moderna con la autodefinición. Cuando la pandemia quita ese camino, uno no puede evitar sentirse "patético" y vacío.
Esta es una gran historia de viajes en el tiempo que toca la necesidad de un desapego extremo por parte del viajero. A medida que la investigación de Gaspery sobre la anomalía y las vidas de las personas tocadas por ella llega a su fin, comienza a comprender que no puede escapar del destino. Hay que pensar en esta historia como un edredón hermoso y extravagante. Probablemente no entendamos cómo encaja todo hasta el final, pero realmente no importa, ya que disfrutaremos del viaje.
“El Mar de la Tranquilidad” invoca preguntas sobre la autenticidad de la realidad para investigarlas solemnemente, reflejadas más directamente en la contemplación de la vejez de Gaspery-Jacques de que “si surge una prueba definitiva de que estamos viviendo en una simulación, la respuesta correcta a esa noticia será: una vida vivida en una simulación sigue siendo una vida”.

"Materia Oscura" es una novela que se ocupa particularmente de dos preguntas importantes: 1) ¿Quiénes somos? y 2) ¿Y si no somos lo que creemos ser? C"Materia Oscura" es una novela que se ocupa particularmente de dos preguntas importantes: 1) ¿Quiénes somos? y 2) ¿Y si no somos lo que creemos ser? Como cualquier buena novela de ciencia ficción, utiliza la ciencia (en este caso algunos conceptos realmente abstractos de la física cuántica) para explorar no las posibles consecuencias de la ciencia, sino las formas en que esta impacta a la humanidad. Básicamente, la ciencia ficción explora cómo estos conceptos se relacionan con nosotros.
La historia comienza con Jason Dessen, su esposa Daniela y su hijo Charlie en su casa en la noche familiar. Jason contempla las decisiones que tomó en la vida que lo llevaron a ese punto: tener una esposa, un hijo y un trabajo mediocre como profesor de física en una pequeña universidad, cuando podría haber continuado con su carrera y hacer descubrimientos que cambiaran al mundo. Hay arrepentimiento por su parte, pero también hay resignación por parte de Daniela, quien también renunció a sus sueños como artista por su familia.
Jason sale a felicitar a un viejo amigo, Ryan, en un bar local por ganar un premio otorgado a personas que logran avances científicos. En el camino de regreso a casa, lo retienen con una pistola, lo secuestran y lo llevan a una planta de energía abandonada donde un hombre misterioso lo droga. Se despierta en un hangar que no reconoce, rodeado de personas que están familiarizadas con él pero que nunca ha visto, y luego se entera de que inventó una especie de máquina que permite a una persona viajar entre diferentes universos (en el sentido de la interpretación de muchos mundos de la mecánica cuántica).
Lo primero que se aprecia en esta novela es cómo toma ideas complicadas y las teje a la perfección en una narrativa extremadamente convincente, siguiendo a Jason (o al Jason que nos es más familiar), mientras lidia con la situación en la que se ve empujado involuntariamente. Las ideas complicadas no hacen a la novela pesada ni difícil de entender; fluyen naturalmente del diálogo de los personajes. En esto, Crouch crea una novela que es, en esencia, un experimento mental. Dada la idea de que para cada decisión que tomamos, los universos se separan para abarcar todos los resultados posibles, y dado un tipo de tecnología que permite a las personas viajar a estos otros universos, ¿cómo podrían los humanos usar esta tecnología y cómo podrían interactuar con ella?
En una palabra: mal. Pero la exploración de Crouch es profundamente esclarecedora porque arroja luz sobre nosotros. Cuando Jason explora "su" casa en otro universo, hace un balance de las muchas diferencias entre esa casa y la casa en la que realmente vivió. Establece un contraste entre lo que sabe y lo que está experimentando actualmente. Se pregunta si se está volviendo loco o si alguien le está gastando una broma, pero no puede cuadrar sus conocimientos con su experiencia actual.
A medida que avanza la novela, Jason visita diferentes universos donde ve varias versiones diferentes de sí mismo, de Daniela y de Chicago. Reconoce que cuanto más viaja, menos piensa que se comprende a sí mismo. Si hay un número infinito de otros universos, con otras versiones de nosotros, ¿qué es lo que realmente sabemos sobre nosotros mismos? A lo largo de la novela está el tema de que nuestras decisiones nos hacen ser quien somos; el Jason con el que estamos familiarizados tomó ciertas decisiones que lo convirtieron en un hombre de familia, y el Jason que inventó el dispositivo que permite viajar a otros universos tomó otras decisiones. Entonces, ¿cuál Jason es el Jason "real"?
Probablemente no haya forma de responder a esta pregunta, porque la pregunta en sí es absurda. Todos son el verdadero Jason, pero provienen de diferentes contextos y tienen diferentes historias. No son solo el resultado de las decisiones que toman, sino de la historia y los desarrollos en sus universos que son diferentes a nuestros universos. Ninguno de ellos tiene ningún tipo de prioridad sobre cualquier otro, y este hecho ataca nuestro sentido de identidad y la idea de que todos creemos que somos especiales y únicos. Jason tiene que enfrentarse cara a cara con el hecho de que existen versiones de sí mismo que son capaces de cometer grandes males en circunstancias desesperadas.
Además, resulta que la posibilidad de viajar por los universos depende de nuestra propia mente consciente y subconsciente. Esencialmente, nuestros pensamientos y emociones dirigen nuestro viaje en el espacio entre dimensiones. De hecho, al explorar el multiverso, en realidad nos estamos explorando a nosotros mismos.
"Materia Oscura" tiene una estructura interesante. La mayor parte de la narrativa es una perspectiva en primera persona en tiempo presente, desde el punto de vista de Jason. Sin embargo, la historia cambia a tercera persona cuando pasamos a la Daniela original y su tiempo con "Jason2", lo cual es interesante.
Un cambio que hace que Jason2 se sienta realmente extraño, como una persona completamente diferente. La narración de Jason tiene una sensación de flujo de conciencia, lo que refuerza el tiempo presente y realmente hace que, como lectores, sintamos las emociones, el miedo o la sensación de pánico que siente el personaje.
El estilo de escritura de Crouch es descriptivo sin estar demasiado orientado a los detalles. Es original y atractivo y usa puntos suspensivos y guiones con moderación y solo cuando es necesario. La forma en que describe a los personajes es fresca y real, y su estilo también tiene indicios de un sentido del humor irónico.
El ritmo de la novela casi nunca flaquea, y durante los viajes de Jason a través de los universos, Crouch usa una "cuenta regresiva", rastreando el número de viajes que a Jason le quedan por hacer. Esto, combinado con la naturaleza verdaderamente infinita del multiverso, crea una sensación de absoluta desesperanza, especialmente cuando vemos a Jason luchar por descubrir cómo sintonizar su mente y sus emociones para poder encontrar el camino a casa.
"Materia Oscura" tiene una historia sólida, una redacción excelente, personajes desarrollados y reales, y una idea original con un final fantástico. Nos mantiene al borde del asiento, y al final de la historia, nos encontramos cuestionando nuestro propio sentido de identidad.

Más fácil en el sentido de que puedes lanzar un dardo a un mapa y proponer una alternativa absurda o un mundo futuro basado en la política de esa nación. Más difícil porque el mundo lo está haciendo por ti. Con “La Policía de la Memoria”, Yoko Ogawa ha eludido todo esto al construir un mundo lo suficientemente vago como para ser interpretado de múltiples maneras, y lo suficientemente absurdo como para casi disfrutarlo como una novela apolítica.
“La Policía de la Memoria” está ambientada en una isla sin nombre de gente casi en su totalidad sin nombre, una práctica popular en la literatura japonesa moderna. En esta isla, las cosas desaparecen al azar. Esto significa que las personas en la isla a menudo se despiertan para encontrar que algo ha desaparecido, como las rosas, los perfumes o las cintas de grabación; o que las cosas todavía existen físicamente pero ya no funcionan ni se usan, como el único ferry que puede salir de la isla. Una vez algo ha desaparecido, casi todos en la isla lo olvidan poco después, y entonces pueden seguir con sus vidas, sin las cargas de la pérdida de aquello que ha desaparecido. Sin embargo, dos tipos de personas no olvidan: la Policía de la Memoria y una pequeña minoría de civiles que son llevados por la Policía de la Memoria si se descubre que no olvidan lo que ha desaparecido. Nuestra protagonista es una autora cuya madre guardaba recuerdos de cosas que han desaparecido y que finalmente fue atrapada por la Policía de la Memoria. Nuestra autora, sin embargo, olvida y vive con miedo de lo que pueda desaparecer a continuación.
La historia comienza con la infancia de nuestra autora y el establecimiento del mundo en el que vive; la mayor parte de la novela se centra en ella y en dos hombres: el ex barquero, un anciano amable y servicial; y su editor, otro del extraño grupo de personas que nunca olvidan las cosas que han desaparecido. Cuando crece la amenaza de la Policía de la Memoria, nuestra autora encuentra un lugar para esconder a su editor, y allí lo cuida mientras el invierno se vuelve más severo y más cosas continúan desapareciendo de su mundo, cambiando sus vidas de una manera cada vez más aterradora.
“La Policía de la Memoria” triunfa al inculcar una sensación de ansiedad en sus lectores de principio a fin. Una especie de nerviosismo perpetuo e insignificante que ocasionalmente aumenta y nunca se desvanece. Esto se logra sacando a la luz el misterio que rodea las desapariciones de las cosas y la identidad de la Policía de la Memoria, además de mantenernos en suspenso por el temor de lo que desaparecerá a continuación, preguntándonos hasta dónde pueden llegar las desapariciones y cómo seguramente su mundo, eventualmente, colapsará.
Toda ficción distópica apunta a algo; se basa en la preocupación del autor, y por lo tanto, la preocupación de toda la sociedad en la que existe, sobre a qué conclusión podrían conducir los problemas del día a día. Algunas novelas distópicas, como 1984 de George Orwell, apuntan a advertirnos de la trayectoria política actual en la que nos encontramos, mientras que otras, como El cuento de la criada, podrían llevar los problemas del mundo real relacionados con los derechos humanos, la opresión religiosa y el control de los medios de comunicación, a un nivel lógico extremo que asusta a sus lectores. La Policía de la Memoria existe en un mundo orwelliano, pero su tono y su historia son mucho más extremos y menos fundamentados. De hecho, podría ser justo calificar de absurdo el mundo de “La Policía de la Memoria”, ya que no hay lógica, ciencia o incluso misticismo que explique el fenómeno de la desaparición dentro de la novela. Todo es vaguedad y extrañeza.
En cuanto a lo que representa “La Policía de la Memoria”, eso depende mucho de nosotros, los lectores. Existe una ambigüedad en la historia y sus temas que podría llevar al lector a interpretarla como un comentario y una advertencia contra el control estatal de nuestros medios, nuestros libros de historia y nuestros sistemas escolares. Aunque el libro también podría ser menos cínico que eso, y más un ataque a nuestra pereza colectiva. Nos hemos olvidado de nuestras raíces animales: cómo cazar, forrajear, valernos por nosotros mismos; somos gordos, perezosos y damos por sentado nuestros supermercados, nuestra electricidad, nuestros automóviles y nuestros trabajos. ¿Y qué pasaría si estas cosas desaparecieran? ¿Moriríamos de hambre o nos adaptaríamos? “La Policía de la Memoria” no adopta una postura firme de ninguna manera, y su inteligencia radica en ser interpretada potencialmente como un comentario sobre el estado que nos obliga a olvidar o a recordar mal las cosas; o como una advertencia contra nuestra voluntad de olvidar habilidades y conocimientos en favor de la inactividad y la automatización. Y, por supuesto, existe una tercera opción: disfrutar de la novela como una historia aterradora y estimulante, pero a la vez de lenta cocción.
Sin embargo, dejando a un lado toda esta inteligencia y tensión ansiosa por un momento, “La Policía de la Memoria” no es una novela distópica perfecta. De hecho, sufren en el avance de la trama y es en gran medida un libro de conceptos. Nos involucra en un mundo fascinante y verdaderamente escalofriante, pero hace poco para guiarnos a través de él con una historia progresiva. Sin embargo, tiene una protagonista verdaderamente empática y unas apuestas que se sienten mucho más profundas. Así, a pesar de una trama que se estanca un poco a medida que avanza, “La Policía de la Memoria” se salva por su dedicación a construir y fortalecer intensas intimidades personales entre sus personajes.
La Policía de la Memoria es un acto de malabarismo que coloca a los lectores con el espectáculo de un concepto: algo extraño e inquietante, algo obviamente distópico y temáticamente intrigante, antes de alargar un poco su actuación, pero al mismo tiempo alentándolo a enamorarse de sus protagonistas en un manera verdadera y significativa. Entra en un territorio profundamente inquietante que te hará pasar páginas frenéticamente para ver cómo podría terminar. Ciertamente hay problemas con el tono y el ritmo y, sin embargo, no se podría decir ni por un momento que La Policía de la Memoria alguna vez nos permitió relajarnos; el miedo a lo desconocido y la ansiedad silenciosa que te contagia este libro nunca desaparecen. Y tiene una versión refrescante de la fórmula distópica, con un concepto original y un mensaje lo suficientemente vago como para fomentar el debate, pero lo suficientemente fuerte como para que tu cerebro piense en él durante días después de terminarlo, hasta que tengas ganas de retomarlo, de nuevo. La búsqueda de respuestas que podrías haber pasado por alto puede volverse demasiado difícil de soportar.
Es seguro decir que Yoko Ogawa ha demostrado por qué es una de las mejores escritoras que tiene Japón; cómo toma un género o una idea en sus manos y lo moldea en algo humano, algo aterrador, algo crudo y algo completamente nuevo.

El pequeño Paul Atreides, hijo del duque Leto, es nuestro héroe principal. Viajará con sus padres a Arrakis, también llamado Dune, para ser parte de la nueva familia gobernante del planeta. Ya nos enteramos de que tiene sueños proféticos y que una organización misteriosa llamada Bene Gesserit, de la cual su madre es miembro, lo ha estado entrenando con ejercicios mentales y fisiológicos, pues parecen ver un papel especial para él. Hay temas de entrenamiento de la conciencia y de elevarse por encima del ser animal, temas de religión, y todo está ambientado en una sociedad interestelar de imperios y feudos. Transmitir todo esto en unas pocas páginas significa que la escritura de Herbert es muy densa, pulida y precisa.
No hay un factor que se destaque por sí solo por encima de los demás en este libro. Hay una armonía perfecta entre todos los elementos, ya sea el ritmo, los personajes, la construcción del mundo, o el diálogo.
Todos y cada uno de los personajes aportan algo diferente a la mesa. El caso es que a través de la totalidad del elenco, podemos ver el Imperio casi en su totalidad, tanto en un nivel macro como en uno más personal. Vemos cómo las distintas casas nobles luchan entre sí; cómo las tropas de élite del Emperador Padishah, los Sardaukar Imperiales, se comparan con los ejércitos de otras Casas nobles; y los guerreros del desierto de Dune, los Fremen; vemos cómo la política puede afectar negativamente a una casa noble desde adentro; vemos cómo sobrevive la gente más humilde del Imperio; vemos las estrategias, las tramas y los contraataques de la Hermandad Bene Gesserit en vigor; vemos cómo los Navegantes de la Cofradía encajan en los estratos sociales y culturales del Imperio; y mucho, mucho más.
El viaje de Paul Atreides desde su juventud en Caladan, a través de sus años en Dune y hasta la culminación de su auto-realización es la narrativa central de Dune. Todo gira en torno al planeta desértico, y la vida de Paul en él está intrínsecamente ligada a su destino. A través de Paul, y otros personajes, vemos cómo los Fremen pretenden cambiar la faz del planeta para las generaciones futuras, redefiniendo su relación con él a lo largo de las décadas e incluso siglos. La introducción de Paul en los grandes esquemas de los Fremen es un elemento importante de la segunda mitad de la novela.
Una vez más, es el inmenso alcance y la visión de Frank Herbert lo que funciona aquí. La novela es increíblemente detallada y toca una plétora de cuestiones sociales, culturales, económicas y ambientales, muchas de las cuales son incluso relevantes hoy en día como lo fueron para el autor en la década de 1960.
Siempre que Herbert habla de la tecnología Imperial, o de las condiciones atmosféricas en Dune y los efectos de la especia alucinógena que abunda en ese planeta, la novela adquiere un tono y una sensación muy fuerte de ciencia ficción. Y no se presenta de una manera aburrida y fáctica, sino que las descripciones de Herbert son accesibles y fáciles de comprender. Tiene facilidad para describir temas complejos como la relación entre los gusanos de arena de Dune y el planeta mismo, y cómo esta relación afecta las condiciones ambientales del planeta, además de cómo a su vez afecta las condiciones de vida en las regiones desérticas.
Las políticas que dictan la vida entre las distintas Casas, entre las Casas y el Emperador, entre los nativos de Dune y sus varios señores supremos, entre los Fremen y los contrabandistas, etc. son otro elemento destacado de la novela. Todo es bastante complejo cuando se mira en su totalidad, pero Herbert se ha cuidado de no abrumar al lector. Cada interacción entre las diversas facciones en una escena, se cuenta con un equilibrio de brevedad y matices para que Herbert pueda insinuar los hilos de la trama más grandes que está tejiendo dentro y fuera, al tiempo que mantiene las cosas simples para que el lector las siga.
Otro elemento importante es cómo Frank Herbert explora Dune, o Arrakis, como también se lo conoce. Vemos cómo viven los Fremen del desierto. Vemos cómo interactúan con las otras facciones presentes en el planeta. Vemos detalles de sus vidas, su cultura, su religión, sus motivaciones, sus creencias. Podemos ver las diferentes áreas del planeta, y también sucede que Dune no tiene un solo gran desierto como parecería a primera vista, sino que hay varias regiones desérticas diferentes en el planeta, cada una con su propia ecología y atmósfera. Vemos muchos gusanos de arena, especialmente los viejos y grandes conocidos como los "Ancianos del Desierto".
Dicho esto, hay algunos momentos en los que algunas de las imágenes y temas con los que se trata pueden llegar a alargarse bastante. Algunas personas pueden encontrar todos estos detalles un poco extraños y dominantes, pero en realidad todo esto suma a la experiencia de lectura. En un momento en que los autores de hoy en día escriben historias super-complejas y detalladas, siempre es bueno ver que es solo el resurgimiento de una tendencia anterior que fue atraída a las masas por escritores como Frank Herbert.
El mundo de la ficción especulativa ha cambiado mucho desde la década de 1960. A diferencia de muchas epopeyas de género moderno, llenas de personajes moralmente grises, Dune es sorprendentemente en blanco y negro. La familia Atreides tiene que ver con el respeto, el amor, la moderación y la salud. Los Harkonnen son tortuosos, caricaturizados y malvados, con apetitos repulsivos. Otra diferencia con las novelas de hoy es que la historia actual habría desarrollado en una trilogía con tres veces el número de páginas. En cambio, la historia de Dune es densa, salta grandes períodos de tiempo y la resolución se condensa en unas pocas docenas de páginas al final.
Dune sigue siendo una historia tremenda con personajes completamente desarrollados, un trasfondo complejo y un estilo teatral. Lo que la ubica por encima de tantas otras epopeyas de ciencia ficción y fantasía es cómo incorpora temas de trascendencia y profecía de una manera que no es para nada tediosa, sino conmovedora e inteligente.
