Este volumen, publicado en 1997, profundiza en la historia de Roland, ofreciéndonos una mirada al pasado del personaje y los eventos que lo moldearon en el hombre que es en la actualidad. La historia retoma los acontecimientos inmediatamente después del final del tercer libro, “Las Tierras Baldías”. Roland y su ka-tet (sus compañeros de viaje: Eddie, Susannah, Jake y el bilibrambo Acho) se encuentran atrapados en una peligrosa confrontación con el enigmático tren Blaine el Mono. Tras superar este reto, el grupo continúa su viaje hacia la Torre Oscura. La trama comienza con la detención arbitraria de varios personajes que viajan por la carretera 50, conocida como "la carretera más solitaria de América". Estos personajes, aparentemente sin conexión entre sí, son llevados al pueblo por un extraño y perturbador policía local llamado Collie Entragian. Este cuadro y su nuevo entorno le brindan la fuerza y el coraje necesarios para enfrentarse a su pasado y reconstruir su vida. Al inicio, Rose es una mujer aterrorizada y sumisa que ha soportado años de abusos físicos y emocionales por parte de su marido. Su trabajo como empleada doméstica para una anciana amargada y quebradiza ha aplastado sus sueños, pero es mejor que arruinar su salud en una fábrica. Mejor, pero no mucho. Prane está en el sur, donde reina la industria y los viejos señores del dinero son cosa del pasado. Miran con desprecio a los retrógrados y anticuados norteños, del mismo modo que los norteños levantan la nariz ante el áspero, agitado y sucio Sur. Desesperada por algo más, solicita un trabajo como criada de sangre en una de las lejanas Casas del Norte. En el Norte, las criadas de sangre son muy elogiadas. Para Marion, una criada de sangre parece alguien que es mitad doncella y mitad consorte de la reina, una sirvienta contratada en título pero una novia en la práctica. Marion acepta un puesto con la condesa Lisavet, la jefa de la Casa del Hambre, una de las Casas más antiguas del Norte. Al principio todo parece estar bien, aunque un poco extraño. Un diente perdido aparece en su dormitorio. Una de sus compañeras criadas de sangre está demasiado tensa y empuña su rencor como una espada. Lisavet es tan voluble como una tormenta de nieve, a veces cariñosa y seductora, mientras que otras es fría y desdeñosa. Marion se emociona al ser atraída a la cama de Lisavet y comienza a soñar con un futuro al lado de su amante. Pero pronto, la sangre comienza a filtrarse a través de las costuras de la endeble fantasía de Marion. Una criada de sangre se vuelve loca y un miembro del personal de la casa desaparece. Un señor quiere reclamar el trono de Lisavet. Los secretos brotan de sus tumbas y verdades terribles intentan arrastrar a las criadas de sangre al infierno. Marion se ha enfrentado a la muerte antes, pero sus garras nunca habían estado tan apretadas alrededor de su garganta. La autora Alexis Henderson mantiene una estrecha atención en Marion a lo largo de la novela, en detrimento de la historia en su conjunto. Casi no aprendemos nada sobre el mundo, las otras Casas o los otros personajes. Incluso la propia Lisavet sigue siendo un enigma para el lector tanto como lo es para Marion. Recibimos algunos datos sobre su infancia, pero sospechamos firmemente que ella tendría exactamente el mismo tono de crueldad independientemente de si pasó por esas pruebas o no. El libro también necesita más construcción del mundo en torno a las Casas. Henderson introduce cada capítulo con una cita de una criada de sangre diferente, pero esas citas tienen poco peso porque el lector no tiene idea de quiénes son esas doncellas ni nada sobre las Casas donde fueron contratadas. También hay algunas disputas entre Casas en el fondo que no dejan mucho impacto. Marion a menudo comenta sobre las diferencias culturales entre el Sur, de donde ella es, y el Norte, donde vive Lisavet, pero, nuevamente, debido a que Marion no puede aventurarse más allá de los muros de la Casa del Hambre y porque Henderson elige no compartir cualquier conocimiento del Norte que Marion aprende durante su tutela, sus comentarios significan poco para el lector. Lo que vemos del mundo es fascinante y convincente. Más construcción del mundo habría tomado un libro muy bueno y lo habría hecho grandioso. También es de apreciar cómo lo queer aquí es simplemente una forma de existir en el mundo. No existe una palabra para queer porque no la necesitan. Las personas se sienten atraídas por quien les atrae y a nadie le importa de una forma u otra. Marion no siente vergüenza de tener sexo apasionado y placentero con mujeres y nunca considera ocultar esa parte de su identidad. La raza tampoco parece ser un factor importante de opresión, aunque Marion señala que ella y otra chica negra tienen que peinarse ellas mismas porque en las Casas del Norte, con su población predominantemente blanca, no saben qué hacer con los rizos. Y cabe decir que no debemos esperar una historia de vampiros tradicional. Lisavet no es un vampiro. Más bien, tiene una enfermedad no especificada que le exige beber sangre para sobrevivir. Lleva tapas doradas puntiagudas en los dientes que pueden penetrar y rasgar la piel, lo que le permite beber directamente de la fuente, pero la mayor parte del tiempo bebe sorbos de una taza de té después de que una criada se ha extraído su sangre a través de una aguja. El mundo de Henderson es fascinante, pero desearíamos que hubiera profundizado más. La novela es bastante breve, y no hubieran importado otras cien páginas o más que profundizaran en los matices de la forma en que las diferentes Casas se relacionan entre sí y por qué los dueños de las Casas necesitan beber sangre. También hay políticas sutiles en juego. Por ejemplo, Lisavet está siendo cortejada por todo tipo de hombres de otras Casas que quieren casarse con ella y hacerse cargo de la Casa del Hambre, pero ella no está dispuesta a compartir su condición y por eso permanece soltera. Nada de esto está muy bien explicado, lo cual genera confusión. En última instancia, “La Casa del Hambre” tenía la mejor premisa posible, pero no logró dar en el blanco en muchas áreas. Alexis Henderson es una autora fenomenal y las descripciones góticas y atmosféricas que tiene este libro son maravillosas, pero en su conjunto carece de lo necesario para ser totalmente memorable. Penny, una artista que nunca ha mostrado formalmente su trabajo, ha vivido en el mismo apartamento durante décadas. Una vez lo compartió con su pareja de toda la vida, un colega artista de gran reconocimiento. Pero desde su muerte ella ha vivido sola, los días pasan sin pompa ni ceremonia, sólo el envejecimiento de su cuerpo muestra que el tiempo ha pasado. Penny sabe que su piel está más arrugada que antes, sus ojos más débiles y sus rodillas más rígidas, pero todavía siente que su mente está aguda. A veces se le olvida un detalle o deja fuera una verdura por mucho tiempo, pero ese tipo de cosas le pasaban incluso cuando era joven. Aún así, es consciente de que con la edad su memoria se debilitará, por lo que ha comenzado a dejarse notas en su apartamento, metidas en libros, metidas en los bolsillos de su abrigo y prendidas en su refrigerador. El estilo de Reid es breve y directo, escribe en perspectiva de primera persona prefiriendo líneas ágiles y contundentes a oraciones sinuosas. Su escritura es rápida y decidida, sin caer nunca en la pretensión. Sin embargo, donde realmente sobresale “Dispersión” es en sus reflexiones sobre el envejecimiento. Reid tiene sólo 41 años, pero escribe sobre el envejecimiento como si lo hubiera experimentado de primera mano. Las mediaciones de Penny son brutalmente honestas, pero nunca cínicas. Sus reflexiones sobre la vida, su cuerpo y su mente se leen como sinceras y auténticas. Reid tiene una habilidad especial para crear narradores reflexivos y es posible que esta vez haya escrito el mejor hasta ahora. Dicho esto, “Dispersión” no es una novela perfecta, pues la historia termina demasiado pronto. Si bien parte del atractivo de Reid es lo cómodo que se siente al dejar que el lector responda sus propias preguntas, el libro parece terminar justo cuando él comienza a entregar las piezas clave necesarias para formar conclusiones. Unos cuantos capítulos más para analizar la relación de Penny con su pareja y las intenciones de Seis Cedros para sus residentes habrían sido de gran ayuda. No obstante, este es otro gran libro de Reid, con una premisa apasionante y una conclusión inquietante, esta novela contemplativa y esquiva resulta tan íntima como un recuerdo y tan aterradora como una pesadilla. “Enebro & Espina” es un cuento de hadas, pero no en la forma convencional. Es una versión libre de “El Enebro”, uno de los cuentos de hadas más espantosos de los hermanos Grimm, en el que una malvada madrastra engaña a su marido para que, sin saberlo, se coma a su propio hijo en la cena. Si bien la trama de “Enebro & Espina” se parece poco al cuento de hadas original, conserva el espeluznante corazón de esa historia. Esta novela es perversamente sangrienta y se deleita con sus aspectos de pesadilla. ¿Qué más se puede esperar de una novela cuyo material fuente es una historia sobre canibalismo? La novela sigue a Marlinchen y sus dos hermanas, que viven aisladas de la ciudad de Oblya que está en rápida industrialización. Encerradas en su casa por su autoritario padre mago, las tres hermanas se ven obligadas a usar sus habilidades mágicas a cambio de dinero para alimentarse a sí mismas y a su padre, que ha sido maldecido con un hambre perpetua. Cuando las hermanas se cuelan en la ciudad una noche, Marlinchen conoce a Sevas, un bailarín de ballet de quien rápidamente se enamora. Pero un monstruo asesino que deambula por la ciudad hace que el mundo exterior sea peligroso, y Marlinchen tiene que encontrar una manera de detener los asesinatos antes de que sea demasiado tarde. Destaca mucho el entorno inmersivo de “Enebro & Espina”. Al ambientar la novela en Oblya, una ciudad inspirada en Europa del Este donde la ciencia y la tecnología están expulsando la magia, Reid crea un universo fascinante poblado de brujas, magos y criaturas mitológicas. Este escenario hace que las secuencias de terror sean aún más sorprendentes, ya que la visión de los lectores de un mundo de cuento de hadas se ve perforada por escenas de violencia y muerte. Otro punto fuerte reside en el personaje principal de la novela. Marlinchen es una protagonista convincente, aunque no necesariamente una heroína estándar. Durante la mayor parte de la novela, Marlinchen no es un personaje activo. Si bien su pasividad puede resultar frustrante para el lector, Reid hace bien en hacer comprensible y comprensiva su falta de resistencia en el contexto del mundo represivo en el que vive. Marlinchen es retratada como una víctima de la sociedad patriarcal de Oblya, y su perspectiva es una forma intrigante desde la cual experimentar la historia. Pero quizás lo más importante es que “Enebro & Espina” ofrece una crítica matizada de cómo las estructuras patriarcales permiten la violencia contra las mujeres. A lo largo de la novela, su padre, sus clientes e incluso ella misma ven constantemente a Marlinchen como un objeto para ser utilizado por los hombres que la rodean. Debido a esto, su autoobjetivación impregna el estilo narrativo de la novela. Esto la convierte en una lectura un tanto inquietante, ya que la comprensión que el lector tiene de Marlinchen, como una joven injustamente despojada de su esencia, entra en conflicto con la forma implacable en que ella se ve a sí misma. En su mayor parte, Reid maneja esto bien y navega esta perspectiva incómoda con la compasión y habilidad necesarias. Marlinchen es mantenida bajo llave por su padre, un mago que ha perdido su poder y control sobre la ciudad de Oblya. Él expresa su frustración por su relativa impotencia ejerciendo control sobre lo único que le queda: sus hijas. Él controla especialmente a Marlinchen, a quien considera fea y lo suficientemente simple como para que ella siempre obedezca todos sus caprichos. Sevas, por otro lado, lleva una vida muy diferente. El hecho de que el padre crió y protegió a Marlinchen y que Sevas le debe su carrera a su tutor nunca es pasado por alto. Pero más que eso, Marlinchen y Sevas no son retratados como supervivientes “menores” por sus sentimientos. No se les juzga moralmente por seguir deseando el amor y el afecto de sus tutores. Más bien, entre ellos se les permite expresar su realidad, sin más comentarios. A veces, los sentimientos simplemente necesitan ser sentidos. Las experiencias de abuso de Sevas y Marlinchen se manifiestan en diferentes formas de autolesión. Sevas bebe en exceso y Marlinchen se da atracones y purgas. Y estos actos son lo único en sus vidas sobre lo que tienen control. Están tan perdidos en los sentimientos de impotencia que les inspiran sus respectivos abusadores que la destrucción de sus cuerpos es la única forma en que pueden recuperar algo de poder en sus vidas. “Enebro & Espina” es un cuento de hadas en su superficie. Pero Reid quita con destreza la piel del mundo que ha creado para revelar su sangre y sus entrañas, tanto en sentido literal como figurado. En última instancia, esta es una historia para cualquiera que busque una historia de fantasía oscuramente horrible y escrita vívidamente. “Figuras Ocultas” es una de esas raras novelas de terror que logra encontrar algunos clichés masivamente usados y convertirlos en algo nuevo e increíblemente atractivo. A la vez una novela sobre fantasmas, asesinatos y posesión y una narrativa que trata acerca de superar la adicción y encontrar una manera de navegar la vida una vez que lo has perdido todo, este es el tipo de historia que muestra que la ficción de terror puede ser al mismo tiempo espeluznante, pulposa, conmovedora e inteligente. Mallory Quinn acaba de salir de rehabilitación y está en proceso de reconstruir su vida desde cero mientras intenta mantener alejados a los demonios de la adicción. Parte de ese proceso es encontrar un trabajo, así que cuando consigue uno de cuidar a un niño de cinco años llamado Teddy durante el verano (un trabajo que incluye una habitación en el patio de la familia en un vecindario muy caro), se siente extremadamente feliz y a la vez ansiosa. Caroline Maxwell, la madre de Teddy, trabaja con pacientes en recuperación por lo que está del lado de Mallory desde el principio. Pero el padre de Teddy es una historia diferente. A pesar de la tensión, Mallory se enamora inmediatamente de Teddy y de su trabajo, y adopta una cómoda rutina de cuidar al niño, salir a correr por el vecindario y ver películas de Hallmark en su tablet. Brillantes y espeluznantemente traídas a la vida por los artistas Will Staehle y Doogie Horner, los dibujos de Teddy son la pieza central del rompecabezas en el corazón de la novela, y verlos agrega una maravillosa capa de terror a la experiencia de lectura. El que los niños dibujen cosas espeluznantes es un cliché del terror, pero Rekulak logra colocar las ilustraciones en el centro del libro de una manera que parece nueva y alimenta el misterio que Mallory está tratando de resolver. Dar nueva vida a viejos tropos no es una tarea fácil, pero Rekulak lo logra de manera brillante aquí. Y si bien las ilustraciones son geniales, “Figuras Ocultas” es memorable por otras dos cosas: el talento de Rekulak para el desarrollo de personajes y la maravillosa manera en que entrelaza elementos de los géneros de terror, misterio y thriller. Mallory es un personaje complejo y problemático. Está intentando con todas sus fuerzas construir una nueva vida, pero la culpa de un horrible accidente en el que murió su hermana pequeña, la relación rota con su madre y las mentiras que le dice a un joven que conoce y del que se enamora la persiguen. Además, sus problemas pasados son difíciles de ignorar cuando comienza a escuchar cosas y se convence de que hay una presencia en la casa que posee a Teddy y usa su mano para dibujar imágenes aterradoras. A lo largo de la historia, fracasa y vuelve a intentarlo, miente y luego se sincera, lo arruina todo y, en lugar de dejarlo o volver a caer en la adicción, sigue luchando para arreglar las cosas. El segundo elemento que hace de esta una novela destacada es la forma perfecta en que el autor entrelaza todos sus elementos. Esta es una historia de fantasmas, posesión, asesinato, misterio y mensajes del más allá. Aquí hay de todo, desde dibujos espeluznantes y una sesión de espiritismo con una tabla Ouija hasta sonidos extraños en el bosque y un pasaje aterrador que involucra un monitor para bebés. Sin embargo, la narrativa también trata sobre el pasado de Mallory y cómo afecta su presente y cómo parece ser lo más importante que le impide tener un gran futuro; la forma en que nuestra psicología puede jugarnos malas pasadas, la forma en que su entorno socioeconómico parece dictar las oportunidades que puede recibir. Incluso hay un poco de romance. Si bien todos estos son elementos muy diferentes, Rekulak los mezcla bien y el resultado final es una novela sólida y atractiva que trata tanto de las personas y sus problemas como de los fantasmas y una historia terrible que tuvo lugar hace mucho tiempo. Hacer terror moderno se trata de mezclar géneros manteniendo intacto su corazón oscuro, y eso es lo que hace “Figuras Ocultas”. Ya habiendo reseñado cada una de las historias incluidas en el primer tomo de “Pesadillas y Alucinaciones”, esta vez nos centraremos en el segundo tomo titulado “Pesadillas y Alucinaciones II”, el cual también contiene 12 obras. **La Estación de las Lluvias** Una joven pareja alquila una cabaña en el pequeño pueblo de Willow, Maine, para pasar el verano. Cuando llegan, son recibidos por un grupo de lugareños que les advierten que se mantengan fuera de la ciudad durante la noche porque se espera una lluvia de sapos. La pareja cree que se trata de una broma y se instalan en la cabaña. Y son despertados en medio de la noche por una lluvia de millones de sapos con colmillos como navajas. Resulta que cada siete años llueven sapos, sapos comedores de hombres con dientes puntiagudos, en Willow, y cada siete años, una desafortunada pareja de turistas llega justo a tiempo para ser sacrificados por dichos anfibios. Los lugareños creen que el sacrificio periódico es lo que asegura que los sapos desaparezcan después de cada “temporada de lluvias” en lugar de quedarse; y todo el procedimiento, incluida la oferta de una advertencia que saben que será ignorada, se ha convertido en un ritual muy usado por el que los lugareños se sienten un poco mal, pero lo realizan de todos modos. Este pequeño sub-género del terror es tan familiar y tan utilizado que cualquier rastro de comentario social significativo se ha borrado hace mucho tiempo. Es una muestra divertida y profesional de King, no es algo de lo que se sienta la necesidad de volver a leer, pero ciertamente tiene sus buenos momentos. La batalla contra los sapos es una escena divertida que podría haber durado más de lo que dura. **Mi Bonito Pony** Un joven recibe algunas lecciones de vida de su anciano abuelo. El anciano señala que hay tres tipos de tiempo. Se refiere a los largos e interminables veranos que parecen durar una eternidad, al tiempo real al que apoda como un “bonito pony” que puede huir demasiado rápido si no lo vigilas, y al tercero cuando envejecemos y las estaciones dejan de ser distintivas y comenzamos a perder más la noción de las cosas. Según King, esta pieza es una reminiscencia de un personaje que se suponía iba a ser el protagonista de una historia violenta, la cual King abandonó mientras escribía como Richard Bachman. En esa historia, se supone que el protagonista recuerda sus tiempos con su abuelo, que es la parte que se eligió para escribir este relato. **No, Se Equivoca de Número** Esta es una pequeña historia dulce y triste contada en forma de guión. Dada la estrecha asociación de la obra escrita de King con el cine, parece apropiado encontrar un guión escrito por King metido aquí en medio de sus cuentos más tradicionales. En su mayoría, es una historia bastante conmovedora sobre una familia feliz cuya vida se ve sumida en un caos cuando reciben una llamada telefónica de una voz extrañamente familiar que les ruega que tomen una acción no especificada. En comparación con el estilo de escritura verboso y hablador habitual de King, el formato del guión es necesariamente rígido y corto en los detalles típicos del autor. No obstante, algunas de sus fortalezas narrativas brillan. La relación marido/mujer se muestra cálida y creíble. Algunas escenas divertidas de los niños de los protagonistas Bill y Katie discutiendo sobre qué programa de televisión mirar fueron claramente escritas por alguien que se pelea con frecuencia con niños que discuten. Esta es una retorcida historia de ciencia ficción, en la que King ofrece algo bastante original. Cualquier resumen que se haga de la trama no le hará justicia a la historia, la cual debe leerse para apreciar su rareza. Es como si fuera una película de terror completa contada en 50 páginas. **Crouch End** Una pareja estadounidense de vacaciones en Inglaterra se pierde mientras camina por el barrio londinense de Crouch End. Mientras intentan navegar por calles desconocidas, tienen encuentros cada vez más inquietantes y se ven arrastrados a una dimensión lovecraftiana de pesadilla. Esta es una historia de terror moderna y funciona mejor porque King es libre de aportar su propio estilo de escritura e intereses temáticos, en lugar de simplemente imitar a Lovecraft. "Crouch End" es más explícitamente una historia de los mitos de Cthulhu que por ejemplo "El Misterio de Salem’s Lot", la cual claramente tiene lugar en el meta-escenario de Lovecraft de conocimiento prohibido y monstruos y dioses indescriptibles, pero que se mantiene alejada de las menciones reales de personajes o entidades específicas de Lovecraft. Todo es agradablemente aleatorio e inexplicable, en un típico estilo de Stephen King de "¿por qué le pasan cosas malas a la gente buena?". **La Casa de Maple Street** Cuatro niños descubren que su casa parece convertirse en una especie de nave espacial cuando un metal comienza a aparecer por todas partes, y ven esto como la oportunidad perfecta para deshacerse del nuevo esposo abusivo de su madre. Una vez más, esta historia es otro gran ejemplo de una amenaza humana que entra en contacto con algo de otro mundo. En este caso, la amenaza humana es el muy desagradable padrastro de los niños, Lew, y la ocurrencia de otro mundo es la extraña maquinaria que se extiende silenciosamente por toda la casa familiar (que, por supuesto, solo los niños notan). Esta historia es especial por dos razones: primero, el tema de los niños que se unen para vencer a un adulto desagradable es divertido; y segundo, la revelación del final es realmente una idea genial. **El Quinto Fragmento** Un ladrón llamado Jerry Tarkanian se propone vengar la muerte de un amigo (y también ladrón) que fue traicionado después de un lucrativo atraco. Y mientras ejecuta su venganza, tal vez querrá también tomar posesión de las cuatro piezas del mapa de un tesoro enterrado. La fuerza de la escritura de King está tanto en el suspenso como en el terror. Ciertamente hay excepciones y, obviamente, los dos géneros tienen mucho en común: una buena historia de terror suele implicar mucho suspenso. Pero podríamos decir que King es al menos tan bueno escribiendo suspenso no sobrenatural como escribiendo escenas de terror sobrenatural. En historias no sobrenaturales, como ésta, aumenta la tensión con bastante eficacia sin llamar a los fantasmas y los duendes. La trama incluye los elementos esperados de desconfianza, puñaladas por la espalda y planes criminales demasiado complejos, todos los cuales se resuelven prolijamente en algunas escenas de violencia mortal. Cuatro ladrones llevan a cabo un atraco, pero para evitar llamar la atención de la ley, acuerdan esconder las ganancias mal habidas durante varios años. Hacen arreglos para que se elabore un mapa de la ubicación del botín, y luego lo dividen en cuatro "cuartos" que deben combinarse para conocer la ubicación precisa del tesoro. Cada uno de los cuatro ladrones toma una parte del mapa y se van por caminos separados, prometiendo volver a encontrarse después de que haya pasado el calor de la atención policial. **El Caso del Doctor** En esta historia, Sherlock Holmes y el Doctor Watson se enfrentan a un desafiante misterio de asesinato en una "habitación cerrada". Y como era de esperarse, la narración es muy fiel a la tradición de Sherlock Holmes. Es un misterio con cuatro sospechosos, donde todo está limpio y ordenado. El completamente desagradable Lord Hull, acercándose al final de su vida, anuncia a su esposa y a sus tres hijos que acaba de desheredarlos en su nuevo testamento; luego se encierra (solo) en su estudio y muere por un cuchillo en la espalda. La mayoría de las veces, las personas que intentan escribir al estilo del siglo XIX se delatan con anacronismos. King evita esto, en su mayor parte, particularmente en el uso correcto de la palabrería y la fraseología arcaica lanzada en las historias originales. Un momento divertido llega al comienzo de la historia, cuando Watson nos dice que ahora es nonagenario y que ya no recuerda muy bien el caso. Luego comienza su narración señalando que "era una tarde húmeda y triste" justo después de la una y media, y Holmes estaba mirando por la ventana, sosteniendo pero sin tocar su violín, seguido de otras descripciones extremadamente precisas de las condiciones y eventos que ocurrieron muchas décadas antes. Este recuerdo total es, por supuesto, una presunción divertida de las historias de misterio, así como de muchos otros géneros. **El Último Caso de Umney** Un detective corriente está plagado de la sensación de que algo "no está bien" a medida que pasa un día típico en el trabajo. Con el tiempo, se entera de que es un personaje de una serie de novelas policiacas, y que el autor planea destruir a su protagonista y ocupar su lugar en esta versión fantástica del sur de California de la década de 1930. Una vez más se comprueba que Stephen King tiene un amor descarado por la novela policíaca. Aquí King incorpora todos los clichés (tanto del escenario como del lenguaje) que el género tiene para ofrecer. No pasa mucho tiempo antes de que llegue un “cliente” para dar la noticia: Umney es un personaje ficticio, el protagonista de una popular serie de detectives escrita en la década de 1990. El “cliente” es el autor, quien (impulsado por un dolor personal) busca escapar hacia sus propias fantasías. Debajo de la emulación del género, King hace algunas preguntas interesantes sobre el arte de escribir. ¿Cuál es la relación entre un autor y los personajes que crea? ¿Existe la sensación de que cobran vida propia independientemente de los planes del autor? **Baja la Cabeza** Casi al final de la colección llegamos a esta rareza que es un ensayo sobre la temporada del Campeonato de Ligas Menores de 1989 del hijo de King, Owen (ahora un autor de best-sellers por derecho propio). Una adición que probablemente solo atraerá a una subsección muy estrecha de la base de fans de King. Este texto tiene una duración de lo que en la edición impresa asciende a 55 fatigosas páginas que son, si no interminables (pues la escritura de King está demasiado cargada para exponer la bomba de adrenalina del béisbol en sus momentos más enrarecidos), completamente injustificadas por el hecho de que el ensayo no presenta comentarios, ni perspectiva, ni filosofía sobre el deporte, excepto por dos breves párrafos sobre los pensamientos del entrenador en jefe del equipo sobre lo que los jugadores se llevarán de la experiencia cuando la temporada llegue a su fin. Es un cliché que, aunque muy posiblemente válido, está aplastado por todos lados por un ensayo inflado que, por lo demás, no es literalmente más que una jugada por jugada de toda la temporada. Es como cuando la gente tenía que escuchar los juegos en la radio, en lugar de verlos en la televisión. **El Mendigo y el Diamante** Este es un recuento de una parábola hindú que cuenta la historia de un viejo mendigo llamado Ramu que ha tenido una vida miserable. Un día, Ramu camina pensando en su infeliz existencia y sintiéndose enojado con Dios. Dios, a pedido de un arcángel que sintió lástima por el mendigo, deja caer un diamante masivo en su camino a plena vista. El diamante vale tanto que lo alimentaría a él y a todos sus descendientes durante varias generaciones. Pero mientras tanto, Ramu ha decidido después de reflexionar un poco que no debe estar enojado por su vida o culpar a Dios pues todavía tiene algunas cosas por las que estar agradecido, como conservar la vista a una edad tan avanzada. Para ilustrarse a sí mismo cuánto peor podría ser la vida si fuera ciego, decide cerrar los ojos mientras camina. Irónicamente, no ve el diamante debido a esto y alegremente pasa junto a él, errándolo por solo unos centímetros. Esta corta historia comienza con una nota del autor que explica su origen y que en la versión hindú original de la historia, Dios es Shiva y el arcángel es su esposa, Parvati. Curiosamente, esta historia originalmente no figuraba en la lista de contenido de “Pesadillas y Alucinaciones”. **Agosto en Brooklyn** Para terminar la colección, tenemos un poema que de cierta manera se empareja con la historia “Baja la Cabeza” ya mencionada. Tiene un tono reflexivo, una mirada nostálgica a lo que muchos consideran los días de gloria del béisbol como pasatiempo nacional de los Estados Unidos, centrándose en el apogeo de los Dodgers de Los Ángeles en sus días como los Dodgers de Brooklyn bajo la dirección de Walter Alston. El título del poema refleja el tono del mismo, ya que describe el apogeo del equipo en 1956 en su campo de Ebbets Field, ahora demolido hace mucho tiempo. El poema menciona a muchos de los jugadores asociados con el club celebrando sus logros, y termina con una nota melancólica. *************** Como conclusión, el largo alcance de la imaginación de Stephen King y la fuerza sin restricciones de su narración siguen demostrándose en esta colección. Aquí hay algo para los lectores de todas las tendencias y predilecciones: cuentos clásicos de lo macabro y lo monstruoso, exploraciones de vanguardia de las tierras fronterizas entre el bien y el mal, brillantes reinvenciones de otros autores clásicos, incluso un guión y una sincera pieza acerca del béisbol. Sin embargo, “Pesadillas y Alucinaciones” llegó a las tiendas en septiembre de 1993 y anunció el comienzo de un período de cinco años durante los cuales King solo produciría un libro que los fanáticos consideran uno de sus mejores, “La Milla Verde”. Para la mayoría de los autores un periodo de cinco años sin mucho éxito no importaría mucho, pero para alguien con períodos fértiles tan prolongados en el pasado, eso se destaca. Sin embargo, esta colección vendió más de 1 millón de copias en tapa dura y más de 2 millones adicionales en tapa rústica. Como dice King en su introducción, "... algunos críticos han estado diciendo que podría publicar mi lista de lavandería y vender un millón de copias más o menos". O, en este caso, podría vaciar sus cajones y vender casi cuatro millones de copias. Sus habitantes están atormentados no solo por su situación económica en decadencia, sino también por ruidos extraños, junto con el comportamiento peculiar del perro de la familia. La autora nos dice que no es el tipo de persona que cree en fantasmas en la vida real. Pero durante su investigación para “El Ocupante”, se sintió intrigada por las teorías sobre las causas de los poltergeists: Algún tipo de energía oscura que podría producirse cuando no estamos contentos. O en conflicto, o reprimiendo algo. Algo que puede separarse de nosotros y comenzar a causar estragos. “El Ocupante” devuelve el estilo, la innovación y la brillantez a una forma a menudo abaratada por el género del terror. Primero debemos hablar de Holly Gibney, la detective privada que comenzó como un personaje secundario en “Mr. Mercedes” y que creció a lo largo de toda la trilogía de Bill Hodges. Ella apareció nuevamente en “El Visitante”, también como un personaje secundario, esta vez para el escéptico oficial de policía Ralph Anderson. En la historia que da título a esta colección de cuatro historias cortas, Holly es por primera vez nuestra protagonista principal y ahora está en total sintonía con la existencia y lo hábitos de las criaturas sobrenaturales. Cuando cree que ve una de ellas en las noticias después de un devastador ataque terrorista en una escuela, de mala gana, pero a fondo, entra en acción. Esta vez, ella está lista para creer. Cuando el tercer libro de la trilogía de Bill Hodges, “Fin de Guardia”, se sesgó en lo sobrenatural, inicialmente se sintió como si King volviera a caer en un terreno familiar porque no confiaba en sí mismo para jugar con las cosas claras. “Mr. Mercedes” había sido una muy buena novela de procedimiento, un nuevo tipo de esfuerzo para él, y su secuela, “Quien Pierde Paga”, se convirtió en uno de los mejores libros de King de la década de 2010. Desarrollar los poderes psíquicos del antagonista Brady Hartfield parecía innecesario en el mejor de los casos, y socavado en el peor. ¿Por qué este concepto de poder sobrenatural tenía que entrometerse en su nuevo y divertido estilo de escritura? Sin embargo, a estas alturas, incluso si no era el objetivo original de King, el lento cambio de un procedimiento de detective privado a una historia sobrenatural ahora parece intencional. Lo mismo ocurre con el desarrollo del personaje de Holly Gibney, que pasa de ser apenas funcional en “Mr. Mercedes” a ser un personaje fuerte y carismático en el centro de "La Sangre Manda". Necesitábamos esos libros para presenciar cómo Holly entraba en sí misma, y ella necesitaba esos libros primero para creer, y luego para confiar en sus propios instintos cuando se trata de lo sobrenatural. Entonces, lo que estamos presenciando aquí es el nacimiento de una especie de historia híbrida para King: el procedimiento sobrenatural con un personaje recurrente. "La Sangre Manda" no podría haber existido sin la combustión lenta de los cuatro libros anteriores. Como beneficio adicional, obtenemos lo que equivale a una historia de origen para la propia Holly: una mirada a su pasado, por qué era como era al comienzo de “Mr. Mercedes”, y cómo ha crecido desde entonces. King relaciona los orígenes probables de esta historia con el inquietante concepto de un teléfono que suena en un lugar donde descansan los muertos. Esa es la parte que le da a esta novela su factor de miedo. Lo que le da su resonancia es la relación entre el joven Craig y el epónimo Sr. Harrigan, un anciano rico que le paga a Craig para que le lea y haga tareas ligeras en la casa. Aunque la amistad de Craig y Harrigan no es necesariamente tan profunda, es lo suficientemente fuerte como para soportar la muerte. Craig es un niño extremadamente simpático y un buen personaje del que colgar una novela; te identificas con él de inmediato, lo cual es importante cuando toma algunas decisiones que son un poco horribles. Lo que poco a poco se va aclarando en estas cuatro historias es que la gente normal, cuando se enfrenta a lo inexplicable, tiene que tomar decisiones. Y tienen que vivir con esas elecciones, para bien o para mal. “La Vida de Chuck” cuenta su historia al revés, de una manera casi picaresca. Al principio, somos arrojados al medio de nuestro mundo que se desmorona, poco a poco. Internet solo funciona ocasionalmente. California se está deslizando hacia el océano como dijeron los místicos y las estadísticas. No se da ninguna explicación de la destrucción, pero seguimos viendo letreros que alaban a un hombre llamado Chuck Krantz por "treinta y nueve grandes años". En la segunda parte, vemos a Chuck y lo vemos bailar. Uno de los dones subestimados de King es su capacidad para llevarnos al momento trascendente de alegría de un personaje. Obtenemos pistas sobre cómo este contador aprendió a bailar, pero solo profundizamos cuando llegamos a la parte final, la cual explica las otras dos partes sin disminuir el impacto de ninguna de ellas. Estas primeras tres historias son fantásticas y modernas, trabajan con temas y tipos de personajes más recientes y experimentan con nuevos estilos narrativos. "La Rata", nuestra historia de cierre, es el clásico King: una historia sobre cómo escriben los escritores y lo que están dispuestos a renunciar para hacerlo. De esa manera, "La Rata" pertenece al mismo canon que “Misery”, “La Mitad Oscura”, "Ventana Secreta, Jardín Secreto", “La Historia de Lisey” y más. También es una especie de fábula, el tipo de cuento en el que a alguien se le concede su mayor deseo, pero no considera las ramificaciones. En gran medida, “La Sangre Manda” es una valiosa adición a la serie de historias cortas de King. Aquí hay algo para todos los fanáticos del autor: el suave horror de “El Teléfono del Sr. Harrigan", la experimental pero envolvente "Vida de Chuck", y el escritor a manos de su creación en "La Rata". Y hay una facción de fanáticos a los que no les gusta Holly Gibney, pero puede ser que con esta nueva versión cambien de opinión. Algunos han tenido más éxito que otros para llegar allí: cuando se enfrentan a fuerzas sobrenaturales o de otro mundo, algunos personajes se adaptan rápidamente, mientras que otros lo hacen más a regañadientes. Por ejemplo, durante todo el camino de regreso a 'Salem's Lot, Ben Mears y Mark Petrie entienden fácilmente que hay vampiros entre ellos y tienen que trabajar duro para convencer al resto de su grupo. Los que no creen (o los que se niegan a creer) son los que tienen más probabilidades de sufrir y los que tienen más probabilidades de morir. Aquí llegamos a “El Visitante”, un regreso a un tipo de novela con la que King no había trabajado desde “Desesperación” de 1996. La situación es simple: Terry Maitland, el amado profesor de literatura y entrenador de las ligas menores de Flint City, ha cometido el peor crimen imaginable: el asesinato y la violación de un niño. El crimen es tan atroz que el detective Ralph Anderson, que tiene un hijo pequeño en las ligas menores, elige arrestar al hombre a la vista de la ciudad, incluidas su esposa y sus dos hijas, en el punto álgido de un importante juego de las ligas menores que Maitland está entrenando. No es solo un arresto. “Fue, por razones que no pudo comprender”, piensa Maitland, “una vergüenza pública”. La razón por la que Maitland no puede comprenderlo es porque Maitland no lo hizo. Parte de esta configuración se siente como un eco de las primeras escenas en “La Mitad Oscura”. En ese libro, las huellas dactilares en la escena de un espeluznante asesinato coinciden con las huellas dactilares de Thad Beaumont, a pesar de que tiene una coartada y no es posible que lo haya hecho. Ese libro fue escrito en 1989, cuando los perfiles de ADN aún estaban en pañales. El ADN de Terry Maitland está por todas partes en esta escena del crimen (uno de los más horribles que ha escrito King), pero nunca lo vemos directamente, nunca nos topamos con él. Nunca vemos que sucedió. Recibimos informes, entrevistas, recuerdos, pero la forma en que King elude el espeluznante examen de cerca de lo que sucedió es deliberada. El lector no es omnisciente. De esta manera, la naturaleza de “El Visitante” permanece en un lugar lejano, pero sigue siendo cuestionable: ¿Cuánto de lo que creemos es real? ¿Y cuánto es sospechoso? Cuando algo malo le sucede a alguien, especialmente si es de naturaleza sexual, ¿le crees al perpetrador o a la víctima? ¿Ignoras la evidencia? ¿Desprestigias el comportamiento pasado o lo tomas en cuenta? Debido a que “El Visitante” utiliza estas preguntas, la mayoría sin respuestas, al servicio de una historia gigante, nada de eso se siente torpe. Al igual que en “Cementerio de Animales”, King vuelve a examinar los horrores de los mitos hechos realidad. Se nos presenta una criatura de las leyendas mexicanas que mata niños y usa caras de personas inocentes, una especie de “It” inverso. Y al igual que con “It”, matar niños es casi, no del todo, pero casi, secundario. Donde Pennywise prosperó con el miedo, tal criatura come tristeza. Durante una de las escenas más espeluznantes al inicio del libro, el Visitante se le aparece a una niña y le dice que es bueno que llore. Hay algo sutilmente horrible en esto, incluso más que las partes más brutales de la novela. Y no es solo ella: cuando esta criatura no solo comete un crimen, sino que también implica a un querido pilar de la comunidad, desmoraliza a todos. Vemos cómo las acciones del Visitante, y las acciones de las personas que hacen su trabajo para él, casi arruinan a la familia de Maitland, destrozan a la familia de la víctima e incitan a la comunidad a la violencia sin pensar. Todo esto parece sombrío, pero “El Visitante” supera eso utilizando el buen trabajo de detective presente en el corazón de muchos de los libros de King. Más recientemente, King cerró su trilogía de Bill Hodges con el final “Fin de Guardia”, en el que el lunático tóxico Brady Hartsfield obtuvo poderes sobrenaturales. Ese libro, después del muy bueno “Mr. Mercedes” y el excelente “Quien Pierde Paga”, fue un poco decepcionante. De vez en cuando, King aporta elementos sobrenaturales a una historia que parecería hacerlo mejor sin ellos. “El Visitante” explica el por qué. Aunque no es una secuela tan directa de “Fin de Guardia”, uno de los personajes principales de la trilogía de Hodges, Holly Gibney, se convierte en un personaje central de este libro. Si bien al principio es discordante, la presencia de Holly en esta historia tiene el mismo propósito que la de Alan Pangborn en “La Tienda”: después de enfrentarse a lo inexplicable en una novela anterior, ambos personajes están más preparados para manejar los horrores de esta nueva novela. Ella es la que se da cuenta de que todos los involucrados con la criatura piensan en ella condicionalmente, y es ella la que les obliga a creer, aunque sea por un rato. “El Visitante” alcanza todas las calificaciones que esperaríamos de una novela de Stephen King sin dejar de sentirse fresco y emocionante. La sensación compulsivamente tensa de la primera mitad del libro da paso a la familiaridad de la exploración y las escenas de personas inteligentes que descubren a qué se enfrentan; al final, el Visitante es solo una criatura cuya existencia depende de la incredulidad: lo que estamos dispuestos a aceptar, lo que no somos y los monstruos en los que nos convertimos cuando caemos del lado equivocado. ¿Para qué sirve una novela? ¿Leemos para entretenernos o para aprender? ¿Queremos que nuestras suposiciones sean cuestionadas o validadas? La mayoría de los libros toman un lado o el otro, pero las mejores novelas eluden las categorizaciones convencionales. Y podríamos considerar este libro de Camille DeAgnelis como uno que logra una ambivalencia ideal. “Hasta los Huesos” es tanto una novela de terror bien escrita como una dulce historia sobre la llegada a la mayoría de edad de una caníbal adolescente en busca de algunas respuestas. Maren, de dieciséis años, es incapaz de superar un deseo innato de comerse a cualquiera que la desee demasiado, y ha pasado gran parte de su vida evitando las consecuencias de esta maldición. Abandonada por su madre, Maren emprende un camino en busca de su padre y su futuro. Aunque en su mayoría es reservada para sí misma, Maren es involuntariamente encantadora, con un irónico sentido del humor y una cortesía inherente que tiende a traerle problemas. Le resulta imposible evitar que la gente se interese por ella; como cualquier adolescente, tiene que escudriñar sus motivaciones. Cuando Maren finalmente conoce a otros caníbales, descubre que todos eligen a sus víctimas por diferentes razones, un hecho que la obliga a lidiar con si existe o no un argumento moral válido para hacer ese tipo de distinción sustanciosa. DeAngelis no menciona abiertamente el veganismo o los derechos de los animales en su libro, y abstenerse de comer humanos ciertamente no haría que los personajes fueran comensales éticos. Sin embargo, la autora se aventura en los reconocimientos de que cuando las personas que saben que ella es vegana escuchan que ha escrito un libro sobre caníbales, piensan que es extraño, hilarante o ambas cosas. Como menciona en los agradecimientos del libro, la versión corta es que ella cree que el mundo sería un lugar mucho más seguro si nosotros, como individuos y como sociedad, analizáramos nuestra práctica de comer carne junto con sus consecuencias ambientales y espirituales. Este sentimiento es innegablemente cierto, pero no es necesariamente un punto que se destaca en esta novela. Para DeAngelis, el canibalismo no es un sustituto de comer animales, y no ofrece un marco filosófico para lo que alguien debería comer. Cualquier argumento que se haga en esta novela solo está disponible en una lectura atenta del texto, pero está allí. DeAngelis tiene buen ojo para los detalles y los escenarios, y el mundo que ha creado es totalmente realizado y vibrante. Por ejemplo, lleva al lector hasta el momento en que Maren debe comerse a alguien especial y luego, evitándonos los detalles sangrientos, detiene abruptamente su descripción de los eventos: solo hay un antes y un después. Antes, un humano; después, algo de ropa rota en una bolsa de plástico y sangre fresca debajo de las uñas de Maren. El momento real del consumo es vacío, y ese vacío consciente contrasta fuertemente con la vívida notación de DeAngelis de todo lo demás que consumen los personajes. De hecho, “Hasta los Huesos” menciona alimentos más allá de la carne humana, y los detalles se reparten en cada página: sopa minestrone, tocino y huevos, un sándwich de atún, gelatina, pretzels, galletas Oreo, cóctel de gambas, estofado de vagabundo, algodón de azúcar rosa, hamburguesas... Este es un libro que nunca olvida que tenemos que comer para vivir, y comer carne humana rara vez hace que los caníbales estén demasiado llenos para comer platos más tradicionales. Las víctimas de Maren son una lista de nombres en su corazón: lleva una ficha por cada persona cuya vida ha quitado, y existen como individuos en su memoria. Ella está traumatizada por cualquier recordatorio de quiénes eran y qué esperaban lograr en su vida. A pesar de no poder detenerse, Maren sabe que es moralmente incorrecto quitar una vida. Pero no es como si ella fuera indiscriminada. Cuando otro niño le ofrece cigarras muertas en un campamento de verano, Maren se da la vuelta y dice que esas son cosas que no están destinadas a comerse. Estar obligada a comer personas no la hace menos sensible al tabú de comerse a otros seres. Maren se fija en el olor de lo que cada persona ha comido y cómo permanece en su aliento. El hedor a carne podrida sigue a los caníbales, y Maren se enjuaga constantemente el sabor a sangre de la boca. De manera convincente, esta novela no deja atrás a sus víctimas, y permanecen obstinadamente completas. Están de duelo y la pérdida de sus cuerpos es importante, a pesar de que su destrucción era inevitable. Cuando Maren finalmente encuentra una conexión y una forma de vida, es menos un triunfo que un compromiso, y hace que el lector tenga hambre de una alternativa que no está disponible en el mundo de esta novela. No todos los libros sobre los derechos de los animales hacen obvia su ética subyacente, y “Hasta los Huesos” está lejos de ser una novela polémica. En cambio, es una meditación encantadora y reflexiva sobre el tabú y la compulsión, el deseo y la repulsión. También es una novela bien contada y entretenida.
