“One to be a murderer, the other to be martyred. One to be a monarch, the other to go mad.”
This book shouldn't be categorized as a romance. Not because it doesn't have any romance in it - it does, i assure you - but because that romance is merely an element of the entire story. The truth is that this book is a tragedy. It is a tale of hoping against hope, a story whose end we always knew, yet one where we can't help but wish that, somehow, this time the ending would be different. It’s about trying to change your fate. Most of all, it's a tragedy, not because it ended this way but because it was always going to end this way.

I've always been a fan of Meyer's writing and the way she incorporates fairytales into her own stories. It’s incredibly satisfying when you reach a point you already anticipated because of the retelling element, but it still hits because it's so perfectly integrated into the book *chef's kiss*
Her quotes are supreme. They make me feel so freaking much like:
“Perhaps we know each other in the future and you’re only remembering backward.”

one thing i've noticed about tahereh mafi is that her real strength as a writer lies in her characters. i enjoy the plots of her books—they’re well-written and engaging enough, though not exactly groundbreaking. but it's really her characters that stand out. i think that’s why, even though i liked the book, i didn’t end up loving it.

i love mythologies and folklore-type stories, so naturally, i loved the plot. it was interesting, and i liked the overall setting. however, after a captivating start where we learned about the world and the mc's past, things slowed down a lot. for about 150 pages, not much really happened. it wasn’t boring exactly, but the story didn’t seem to be moving forward. smh ...more

After getting off to such a good start, I was excited to see where this book would go. The first chapter literally had me clutching my heart. But where did the book go, you may ask? Nowhere. Literally nowhere. I can pinpoint a total of two or three important things that happen in this book. The rest of it is absolute filler, nonsense content.
The absolute disappointment this book made me feel knows no bounds because I LOVED the first book, and I was so ...more

I actually don't remember the last time a book made me feel this much. This happy, this emotional, this sad. I had to close the book at some moments, close my eyes and put the book on my face because of the number of things i was feeling.
So, instead of writing a review, i'm just gonna write my reaction to everything that went down instead because i don't think i actually can write a coherent review of this book ...more
