I dunno. I had a lot of problems with it. None of it seemed quite right. And like, duh, this subject matter, not the happiest, I get that, but it just didn't seem to gel right with... the plot? I dunno, the plot didn't really gel together. And there were parts of it... I dunno, it was really borderline Issue Book. And the portrayal of the Mormon denomination was... a little off, I think. I mean, obviously there are extremists in every religion, every sect of Christianity and any other religion, but there were zero happy Mormons, which was... a little weird. I dunno. ...more

I think that was the writing style and the main character, to be honest; both how the book was written and the main character the book was about were very much 'meh.' So it was alright. ...more

-World was my favorite thing. Just the mythology of it, how everything happened, especially the idea of 'dead' places - to be honest, where Mary lived was kind of my favorite thing. I loved that.
-Characters, while I didn't think much of them at first, grew on me.
-I don't know if I'm going to ever want to pay full price for the rest of this series. However, if I ever see the rest of these in like, Goodwill or something, definitely. ...more

ThThis was exactly what I'd been expecting - an over-dramatic teen horror, kind of like the ones that were published constantly in the '80s and '90s. This was that. It was maybe a little longer than all of those ones ever were, but it was basically the same thing, and I like that. I really like that, that's my favorite kind of book, honestly, is the cheesy teen horror kind of book.
I did like the characters, I guess, and I guess I didn't guess the killer, which was cool. Vaughan was a fun character, I have to admit I really, really liked him as a character, like, a lot. He was super great, and I loved him. Other than that, though, it was more of like a, "I guesss they're pretty alright, but I don't feel much toward them." It was a cool book though. Not the worst one I've ever found at Wal-Mart. ...more

Re-read January 2014 The Long Walk has been my favorite book for almost three years.
There are so many reasons for this, but the main one is the characters. I have never loved a group of characters so much. I love all of these characters - one frustrates me to no end and one I don't really care about that much, but that doesn't mean I don't adore them. From Hank Olson's initial cockiness to Art Baker's sweetness to Collie Parker's constant anger, I love them all. I love Peter McVries and Abraham and Gary Barkovitch and Davidson and Ray Garraty and, even though Scramm frustrates me, I love him too. Stebbins is fine, too, but he's probably the one character I don't really care about in this book. Maybe it's because his death scene was kind of lame, I don't know. Compared with Olson's and Barkovitch's and Parker's totally epic death scenes to Baker's and McVries's totally heartbreaking ones...
Anyway, one other thing I really love about this book is the fact that our starcrossed lovers (if you count Garraty and McVries as starcrossed lovers) don't make it out because of some miraculous thing that happens. Everyone but one person dies. I mean, I love The Hunger Games and Battle Royale, but do you always have to make it out with the love interest? (Again, counting McVries as the love interest.) The rules of the game set up at the beginning are held true through the entire book. There's no overthrowing The Major. All of your favorite characters die, one by one, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. They signed up for it, after all.
Another thing I really liked was how the different characters reacted to the Walk. Some, like Olson, became extremely withdrawn - Garraty describes Olson as 'the Flying Dutchman, still sailing on even after the crew was gone.' Others go totally insane, such as Barkovitch. Some stay fairly normal up until the end, such as Abraham. And all of them die in the end.
It's implied that almost all of them had some sort of death wish - Baker even says himself "That's the ticket. I wanted to die. Didn't you? Isn't that why?" and McVries mentions something like that at some point. It's just...
The entire book is incredibly fantastic and heartbreaking with one of my favorite casts of characters ever....more

Petition to re-name this book Pain , because I find it ridiculous that there is no book in this series called Pain and I feel like Hunger would be a good candidate. I mean, not even because of intense stuff happening to the characters, but I'm talking about my emotional pain. God, Hunter. Duck. The ship I shouldn't ship but totally ship anyway hahaha.
By that I mean Caina.
God, I love Caina.
But anyway, every time I re-read a series or something, I get scared that I'm not going to love it like I did before. And like every time, I'm proved that, nope, I still love this series and it's like, I love this series and it brings me so much pain and I have no idea why I continue to re-read it because damn, it just takes over my mind. That's something that this series does. It just takes over my brain and I can't think of anything else and god I love everything in this series so much and I'm going to go see if I can read Lies in three hours kthnxbai...more

Re-read, June 2015
This is the beginning of one of my favorite series of all time.
The Gone series has everything that I love in a series - a huge cast of characters, absolute weirdness , a nice heaping of gore, and it's a six-book series with mostly large books. It's fast-paced. It's got kids with superpowers, man, kids with superpowers.
The characters are really what make this series for me, because characters are what make any series or book or TV show for me. There are so many, and I fall in love with almost all of them. It's the point where I almost always have a new favorite every time I re-read the series - Edilio, Caine, Lana, Hunter Lefkowitz (though he doesn't make an appearance until Hunger), and, most recently, Howard Bassem.
If you've read the series or more possibly if you've read the first book, you'll be going "Really AurorA. Howard. " But I've got a whole slew of reasons why and I'm not going to go into them here. Because we'd be here all day and also it would get spoiler-y. I'll condense it, though - Howard's not a hero, he's a survivor. A survivor with damn good character development. (view spoiler)[ I mean, until book five. (hide spoiler)]
I love where this series goes. How far it's willing to go. I love that. I love that Michael Grant just doesn't care. That he just keeps going, and doesn't push the boundaries, he just flat-out ignores them. The characters are human and flawed and make mistakes and are cowardly (view spoiler)[ Lookin' at you, Quinn - but you've got some nice development coming for you, too. (hide spoiler)] and some are evil and some are misunderstood and I just can't wait to re-read the rest of this series. ...more

Re-read... previous? re-read I'm dead. I am just - dead.
So, this is my favorite book in the series, for various reasons. Mostly because we get a lot of Howard Bassem saying what we've all been thinking (especially in terms of stop Astrid and damn Edilio's doing some good work. ), and also just because... I don't know. It's just a great one. It's kind of a connector between the relatively tame first half of the series (er, compared to the later books) and the utter horror that goes down in the later ones.
I just love how much buildup goes into this book, and how we've got stuff raging on in the background, and also I'm just in love with (view spoiler)[ Drake Merwin's character arc. I read a post on Tumblr that was like "drake's character arc is literally just him getting a whip arm and then getting eviller and it's the best thing in the world" and that pretty much sums up my feelings on it. but yes. I love this book. All of these books. And so, time for Plague!...more
