But thI loved Gregory Gourdet when he was on Top Chef and was so excited to hear about this cookbook. The food photography is stunning, first of all. But the recipes are no slouch either! I was particularly impressed with the fermentation section. You never know how accessible chef cookbooks are going to be but this one really does seem to have the home cook in mind, even if there are lots of DIY sauces and ingredients. I’ve bookmarked several recipes to try and I can’t wait to see how they turn out. ...more

The recipes are inspired by the various people profiled, which is such a neat touch. Many of the recipes are aspirational for me—either more complicated than I want to try at home or with ingredients that will be trickier to track down. But I still thoroughly enjoyed reading through them and seeing what Samuelsson loves about each one. And there are quite a few recipes I do plan on trying! I’ve grown very tired of cooking for myself this past year but I feel renewed after reading this and getting new ideas....more

I wish Miller had written it from the assumption that single people don’t need to be convinced that they should cook for themselves. The recipes are all over the place, from the extremely simple to those requiring duck confit. There’s also, confusingly, a section of recipes you can make for a crowd/party.
At the same time, this gave me what I need: recipes with only one or two servings. I am a fan of leftovers but it does get tiring to eat the same thing night after night. The smaller portion recipes will be great to incorporate into the mix. It would have been helpful had some recipes been grouped together by ingredient. If you only need a quarter of a cabbage for one recipe, for instance, what do you do with the rest of it? I try to do my meal planning around that concept so the omission was confusing here.
Note: there is unfortunately a strain of diet culture infused in the pages, with a lot of emphasis or jokes about things being healthy or unhealthy....more

Sometimes you don't want to have leftovers for a whole week. However, this cookbook is structured completely differently in that it's laying out plans for 4 or 5 course meals. There are some recipes that will work just fine for me but the rest may be best for hosting dinner parties. Not a bad idea to keep such recipes in the arsenal. I did find her essays introducing each meal plan to be repetitive and on the smug married side. Many of the things she was reflecting on felt like common sense to me but perhaps if I'd married in my early 20s, I'd have to learn similar lessons. Who can say?...more

I enjoy reading SK because Deb's recipes are part attainable and part aspirational. Deb's pure love and enjoyment of food bursts off the page and you can't help but catch her enthusiasm. I'm probably never going to grill squid or make my own flatbread but I love reading about her process. I read cookbooks for inspiration and to get me out of cooking my usual recipes. To that end, I'm especially looking forward to making the red lentil soup, kale Caesar with broken eggs, and street cart chicken soon. Oh, and just about every dessert. Deb's recipes never steer me wrong....more

I really enjoyed Thielen's sadly short-lived show for the Food Network and this cookbook expands on the dishes featured there. So many of them remind me of the dishes my Grandma made, even though Thielen has much more adventurous and Scandinavian offerings than I did growing up. I have high hopes for her pickle recipe and there were a number of others I hope to try. I don't know how non-Midwesterners will feel about this cookbook but this Midwesterner loved it. ...more
