There was plenty of action and adventure plus the resurrection of a long dead character. We get to visit with old friends, Caul Shivers, Nicoma Cosca. I thought the characters in the First series were more interesting and better fleshed out. It was good to have some of them revisited in this series. To me, there seemed quite a bit more political intrigue thrown in amongst the war and violence. There is quite a bit of plotting and timeline manipulation so it is easy to get a little lost here at times but it does come together. It is obviously the beginning of a series. While it is a good read, it doesn't have that stand alone feel. Be prepared to read more of the series....more
OK read but took me a while. Too much detail and I think the author was deliberately trying to make you hate some characters. It worked. Arya is patheOK read but took me a while. Too much detail and I think the author was deliberately trying to make you hate some characters. It worked. Arya is pathetic. The elves are pretentious assholes. Eragon goes from nerd to super god hero in the blink of an eye (except when he is pathetic pining over Arya.)
I want to finish up the series but I need a break. I'm not sure I want to dive into an 800 page tome right off the bat....more

Two of the best fantasy characters are Glokta and Nine-fingers. I love their storylines and how they approach life (and death). There are also characters to hate (Bayaz, Sult) and characters that are puzzling and you don't know how to feel about (Ferro).
Whatever your opinion of the characters, this series will keep you glued to your seat and hungry for more. It is definitely on my favorites list....more

This is the longest book I have read in a long time. It took me forever, not because I am a slow reader or lack of interest, I just didn't have the time to devote. Needless to say, it was still very much worth the read.
The world building, character development, total imagination is incredible. The world building rivals TGOT even though it is completely different. I like the concept of shardblades and shardplate and soulcasting and stormlight lends themselves to worlds of magic.
This book draws you in and makes you yearn to know what is next. There lies the problem. Tackling a series like this is daunting and emotionally draining. I just went through over 1000 pages and the story is not near complete. I will read the rest of the available series, but not anytime soon! I need a break!...more

I am not sure where it is actually leading but I do know it involves war, magic, swords, unsavory characters, pretty women, ugly men and quests! It sounds like every other high fantasy series but this one is put together well. I learned in this book that there are characters you like and others you absolutely hate!
I really don't care for Jezal. I do not like arrogance and elitism and Jezal is the textbook of those two attributes. I haven't figured out Glokta yet but I think I like him except for his moments of introspection. I realize he has been through living hell and it has made him a dark, bitter man. Nine-fingers is a good character. He is one of those big lumbering guys that you think of as an oaf but is actually quite bright.
Overall, great book. Can't wait to delve into the rest of this series....more
