The first story is about a monster of Aztec lore that is a little happy with his razor claws. It chronicles the stupid kids that happen to release it.
The second story deals with dark magic relating to the occult. It is part of the "Harrow" series and is very heavily sexually laden. I guess I would have to put an age limit on it.
Both stories were very interesting and kept me turning pages....more

I have a little medical background so I enjoyed reading about 1980's era medicine and I think Mr. Wilson handled the medical aspect of the story very well. I found the characters interesting and easy the get involved with. Interesting supernatural yarn! I think I will read a Repairman Jack book next....more

I remember reading his stories in Field and Stream and then starting on his books. This is the first full length fiction I have read by him. I made it through it but it just moved very slowly with more metaphorical description of events than plot. I've seen it listed in the same sentence with "A Boy's Life". Not even close.
This novel is broken into sections dealing with events over a 12 year old's summer. Some of the events were written well such as the story around The Lonely man.
The plus side is that I experienced another author. It is always good to try new things....more

I usually like straight up vampires. They wear dark clothes and capes, sleep in coffins, bite with fangs. Generally, they don't sparkle, walk in daylight, woo pre-teens and teenagers or shoot things out of their mouths. This book is about the "shoot stingers out of their mouth" variety. Yes, they use the stinger to suck blood. While it is a scary and exciting read, I just can't appreciate it like I could an old fashion vamp novel. ...more

The characters are not fluffed out impressively and just don't seem to come alive for me.
Another thing that irks me is that authors try to use popular or impressive sounding equipment. Take for instance weapons. A Glock is a well known semi-automatic pistol. That seems to be the limit of the authors knowledge and research. A Glock does not have a safety you can flip on and off. I know it is petty but this kind of flub is a turn off when I am reading.
I liked the plot and premise. A virus based designer drug with dangerous physical and mental side effects makes for a rollicking good adventure. I am just not sure why this story didn't really click with me. ...more

The sad thing is that I can almost see us spiraling down into a similar hole. I like to think that the world is more nuanced and intelligent than that but this kind of thing has happened before (think Germany, 1930's). Offred was an interesting character. In a lot of books like this, the main character would be shown as brave and stoic. They would not crack under pressure. Offred tells us right away that if push comes to shove, she will roll over like a ball going down hill. She is going to spill the beans on everyone she knows if it will save her some pain. I find this honesty and realism refreshing in a character in a novel. This book should frighten you and serve as a warning. It was written in 1985 but seems more relevant today. I am going to get the second novel so I can see where this story goes....more
