First off, I didn't give this a one due to the fact that it had a couple of good sections and to the fact that I managed to force myself to finish. I try to save 1s for books I can't make it through. Dr. Antonov comes across as a pompous, elitist, royal prick. Then again, I have to realize he is a New Yorker and is thus superior to everyone else in the country, esp. southerners. I did a family medicine residency so I was interested about reading cases and examples from an anesthesia residency. Lo and behold, there were none. There were plenty of instances of belittling people about their food choices, there living choices and their politics, though. His points made about non-physician providers and errors on film/television were on point and nice to read though. People like him are the main reason I have no desire to visit NY and relish my life in flyover country....more

I am a 5'3", rural, socially inept man with a gap in his teeth, and a lisp! I have risen above my station through shear determination and a no quit attitude. The fact that there are truly people like the characters in this book is absolutely frightening. The lesson here is don't rely on others for your own happiness and not everyone is out to get you. I removed a star d/t some poor editing and the sudden switch from 1st person to 3rd person in some places. This was a very fast read and definitely holds your attention....more

As usual, King is long winded and sometimes irritating in his recent need to incorporate his unnecessary political views into the narrative. That said.... This is a fantasy tale building on the dark versions of many of the fairy tales we heard and enjoyed as children. What is these fairy tales were based on an alternate universe of the truth. I guess all fairy tales are based on a modicum of truth or at least can be applied to the real world. This version explores that with an other worldly explanation. It has monarchy, evil, dungeons, mermaids, giants and all the other characters that make fantasy fun to read. There is violence and even a little sex. Read this not expecting literary greatness from King (I doubt he has any of that left in him), but with a relaxing expectation of a good time and an escape from the troubles of reality....more

It is a wonder that mankind survived and even prospered with the many ways we tried to kill ourselves. I don't care how unenlightened man was, you have to sit back and say "WTF" on some of these items. I think missing from the collection was subluxations, homeopathy, fad diets, and psychic surgery. Overall a good collection though....more

I thought the characters in the First series were more interesting and better fleshed out. It was good to have some of them revisited in this series. To me, there seemed quite a bit more political intrigue thrown in amongst the war and violence. There is quite a bit of plotting and timeline manipulation so it is easy to get a little lost here at times but it does come together. It is obviously the beginning of a series. While it is a good read, it doesn't have that stand alone feel. Be prepared to read more of the series....more

This book turned out not to be what I signed up for. The descriptor is very misleading. I expected a book about a horrible predator written deeply about that. I got a book about a teenage girls trials and tribulations navigating small town life (albeit, with a deviant dad and a sexual predator on the loose). It would have been a better book if it focused on the actual crimes and left a more coherent ending....more

If a book drags out and takes me a while to read it, then it doesn't move me. I had a lot of issue with the flow of this book. It read like a history lesson on the horror genre. I am not good at names so there were a lot of references that went right over my head. It was like being inside Jade's head and perusing her actual thoughts. I felt bad for the protagonist so the book was able to illicit empathy. I mean who hasn't felt alienated? Oh yeah, I hated the ending. Did it end like it did as a lead in to book 2? I will probably read book two but I will think on it first....more

I like reading books not based on the field I am in. Even though this is fiction, Dr. Reichs is actually a forensic anthropologist so her books are factually correct. This novel is on two fronts. It is amazing how perspective changes with age. This was some of the worst drivel I have ever read. I am not sure Clark Savage, Jr. is even human. No man can match his mind, strength and looks. The author makes sure you know that about every other paragraph. The effusion of praise toward Doc Savage is nausea inducing. I need to go pound my head against the wall....more
