What I did not enjoy was the cliff-hanger type ending. Nothing was resolved. This tasted more like a money grab on the part of the publisher. I will finish the series but it pisses me off. I was able to follow the story while cooking and working a puzzle but I learn and can pay attention better with visual input. I will probably do more with the audio stuff but not anything I have to pay close attention to.
This is a prequel to a detective series. It was short and to the point. There was no time for character development or plot development. The story did flow though and did come together though quickly. I'll look at the regular series before I pass judgement on whether it is worth pursuing....more

I thought the characters in the First series were more interesting and better fleshed out. It was good to have some of them revisited in this series. To me, there seemed quite a bit more political intrigue thrown in amongst the war and violence. There is quite a bit of plotting and timeline manipulation so it is easy to get a little lost here at times but it does come together. It is obviously the beginning of a series. While it is a good read, it doesn't have that stand alone feel. Be prepared to read more of the series....more

Too much detail and I think the author was deliberately trying to make you hate some characters. It worked. Arya is pathetic. The elves are pretentious assholes. Eragon goes from nerd to super god hero in the blink of an eye (except when he is pathetic pining over Arya.)

Two of the best fantasy characters are Glokta and Nine-fingers. I love their storylines and how they approach life (and death). There are also characters to hate (Bayaz, Sult) and characters that are puzzling and you don't know how to feel about (Ferro).
Whatever your opinion of the characters, this series will keep you glued to your seat and hungry for more. It is definitely on my favorites list....more

The last book I read was torture to get through. This was an actual enjoyment. I wasn't looking for great intellectual literature. I was looking for mental relaxation. The opening adventures on Caspak could stand a little fleshing out but this is a 1916 pulp fiction book. You can't expect Pulitzer material. Just read it and let your imagination soar!...more

OK, now my gripe and the reason for loss of a star. I have 2 pet peeves in literature. Either the author needs to take the time to acquaint him/herself with a topic or find an expert that knows what the hell hew is talking about. The two topics that irk me most are medical and firearms. I am not talking about becoming a doctor or a diehard gun nut. I just want it to be reasonable. The one that tripped me up here was her discussion of a Remington 870 shotgun. She calls it a rifle repeatedly, often enough that it became very irksome. A shotgun is not a rifle. They are two distinctive pieces of hardware. Also, just for information's sake, a pump does not automatically eject the shell when a shot is fired (if you read this you will know what I am talking about).
That being said, I enjoyed the book, enough so that I essentially knocked it out in a day. I plan on reading the rest of the series but I think I will take a break and switch to another genre for now....more

I like the series and think the character development is good. There are characters to like as well as characters to dislike. For a small area, Grant county does seem to have quite a bit of crime! I like realistically told crime stories and Ms. Slaughter can weave a tale. I found a few medical errors but nothing to ruin the story for me. I guess the most glaring potential error is that Sara is a pediatrician that also serves as a medical examiner that does autopsies. A pediatrician is not trained to do this. Anyway, the story is good and I look forward to reading more in the series....more

If a book drags out and takes me a while to read it, then it doesn't move me. I had a lot of issue with the flow of this book. It read like a history lesson on the horror genre. I am not good at names so there were a lot of references that went right over my head. It was like being inside Jade's head and perusing her actual thoughts. I felt bad for the protagonist so the book was able to illicit empathy. I mean who hasn't felt alienated? Oh yeah, I hated the ending. Did it end like it did as a lead in to book 2? I will probably read book two but I will think on it first....more
