In faI’m not picky when it comes to PretendLand romance dynamics. I’ll accept cheating, betrayals, assholes, sister-lovin, even mom’s sloppy-seconds. In fact, I think this is the third book I’ve read where the h ended up with her mom’s ex. (I'm a Creep, Brutal Intentions --- honorable mentions- Her Surprise Baby Christmas, Forbidden Desires), so I can roll with it as long as it’s entertaining.
And unfortunately, I found this BORING AF which is crazy considering the content. There was so much stuffed into the plot (h listening to them have sex, it being a real relationship between the mom and H, the h actively trying to tempt him away), but it was all bland and surface-y generating ZERO feels.
In a nutshell, (view spoiler)[ 41-yr-old nice mom (Amanda) brings her smoking hot 30-yr old BFF (Jake) home to move in. The 21-yr old daughter (Jocelyn) gets feelings and starts coming onto him. He initially pushes her away but for some crazy undeveloped reason, they become DESPERATELY in LOVE. Then, almost as soon as they hook up, Jocelyn gets cold feet and pushes Jake away for the rest of the book because of stuff and her dedication to her mom. That’s it. No drama, no angst, no heartache, just bang your head against a wall frustration of watching nothing happen until like 95% of the book. UGH (hide spoiler)]
Bottom Line- I was expecting angst or buckets of drama, and I got neither. It was underdeveloped, juvenile, and loaded with miscommunication/assumptions. I never felt the attraction or chemistry, and I thought Jake should’ve moved on. It’s all tied up at the end where everyone gets a HEA, but it mostly skipped all the work and healing that needed to take place. And the couple spends the majority of the book separated. ZZZZzzzzz.
Safety- (view spoiler)[ She hears him and mom have sex but is turned on. Once they’re together, he’s never with the mom again. I’m not sure he’s ever with anyone in the years they are separated. She has sex with a BF while trying to get with the H. I think she’s with the ex-bf again, and she gets engaged during the separation. (hide spoiler)]...more

It’s not pretty or healthy, but the H and h are dedicated and OBSESSED with each other, and they get their version of a HEA.
To enjoy this, you really need to be in the mood to be entertained immorally by psychos and just go with it. The h is not endearing or really likable. She does terrible things to both guilty and innocent people… like killing, blackmailing, and even screwing her BFF’s dad just because she wants to break his 20-year faithfulness to his wife… who she liked… and be able to compare father and son.
The flow flips between the past (two years earlier) and the present and is told by the h’s POV.
Bottom Line- I thought it was ok. I love reading crazy people, they’re super fun… I just thought this was missing something or was 70-100 pages too long. Maybe having the H’s POV would’ve helped. ...more

Each book has one main couple but several side couple/side conflicts that continue throughout. (multiple POVs)
This is Stygian/Balen and Danni’s book. They bond while both are captured and tortured by an evil vampire when Stygian breaks his society’s (Scars & Wraiths) law to save her. The first chapter opens two years after their rescue.
I was digging the beginning. The prologue sucked me in, I was interested in trying to sort out the world building, and Danni and Balen were both likable enough. BUT then I started to get bored because nothing new was happening. AND then secondary characters started getting dumped into the plot from EVERYWHERE (Jedrick, Hack, Kier, Anstice, Waleron, Delara, Edan, Tor, Damien, Genevieve, Ryker, Hannah, Sandor, etc.) and all their back/side plots… and I was OVERWHELMED and confused trying to figure out what was going on. BUT then I got invested into Waleron and Delara’s subplot and started getting annoyed when we went back to the main couple.
My only complaint is that I disliked the way the author “unveiled” info/back stories which was by scattering breadcrumbs interspersed with other subplots over the entire book. For example, we had a general idea of the law that Balen broke, but we are midway through the book until we know all the details. Personally, I prefer the facts up front, so I know what is going on and this method left me in the dark and disoriented for much of the book.
Bottom Line- OK read, it wasn’t awesome, but there’s something addicting about it that had me flying through these. BUT I was only into some of the numerous things going on, so I ended up skimming the parts I wasn’t interested in. ...more

The book follows Maya and I’m not going to rate this because I struggled with the writing style and skimmed large chucks (especially the past parts). The book follows Maya and Oliver, stepsiblings with loads of emotional baggage. I HATED the book’s format. It started with the shock teaser prologue followed by the backtrack flashback that slowly winds us to the present. I found the timeline SUPER choppy and confusing at times.
For example… Chapter Eleven- BEFORE { Before Maya’s Eighteenth Birthday Chapter Twelve - BEFORE: Three Days Ago Chapter Thirteen — Maya BEFORE: One Day Ago Chapter Fourteen — Maya Before: The Morning Chapter Fifteen — Oliver BEFORE: Midday Chapter Sixteen — Maya BEFORE: Early Evening Chapter Seventeen — Maya BEFORE: Evening
On and on it went… so choppy and boring because it was moving so slow.
Bottom Line- This wasn’t a great fit for me because I disliked the flow, and I needed more drama… or romance. I picked it up for the OW drama, but other than a few sex scenes with the OW when they hated each other, the only real OW drama is at the end… at it’s over VERY quickly… like she’s bitchy for part of a chapter. It picks up around 70%, so I didn’t skim the end. Safety- (view spoiler)[ I skimmed a lot so I’m probably missing stuff, but there’re on page scenes with OW before they’re together. Maybe a bj w/ OM for her- unless I’m thinking of another book. A couple separations where I know he’s with others… but don't recall if she is. I don’t believe they are ever really a couple, officially speaking. Their first time he blackmails her. That’s all I can remember.

I enjoyed it, but Barrett Maddox sounds like a YA bad-boy – not a Duke. Not to mention the OW is Samantha Fox and the villain is Asher Grey. :)
Piper is BEAUTIFUL and super-duper sweet. She’s almost perfect, but her mom is sick, they’re poor, and she needs a hubs with money. STAT. Enter Barrett, he’s a Duke in America making money to fill his coffers. The two meet and are instantly smitten, but Barrett isn’t officially available because he has an arranged marriage waiting for him in England, so he agrees to help her find a suitable husband.
Bottom Line- This was a short, easy read that had a satisfying amount of angst from these two lovebirds trying to fight their feelings, and adequate drama from a jelly-ex mistress and a skeevy evil dude. It's safe, Barrett is never cruel -- ZERO feelings for any OW, and the forbidden stuff is squared away mid-book, so the plot moves along. **As I'm writing this, it is currently free in the kindle store.

It screamed angsty goodness, I’m a sucker for the H marrying another… oh the heartbreak!! Unfortunately, things didn’t really shake out deliciously for me. The writing isn’t bad, it’s just sort of sloppy. There were so many things shoved in the book sandwich, I found it confusing and very unrealistic… and the holes I could poke in the characters actions/decisions made it hard to get onboard. *The rest will have plot outline spoilers… I’ll try to be vague but stop if you want zero details.
The book is separated into two parts. The first part consists of the early years of Milo and Indiana’s relationship. There’s an age gap (8 years I believe) and they meet at 10 and 18 (I think) some readers were upset by this. The sexual relationship starts when she’s 18 but still in HS. I didn’t find it uncomfortable but will admit certain parts were a bit cringy… my only real grump about this part is that IMO Indie lacked the maturity needed to make the attraction/feelings believable which caused me to disconnect some from them as a couple. Don’t get me wrong, eighteen is young for adulting, but you’ve got to make her mature for me to believe a 26-year-old man would be interested, and they’d have some deep feeling/connection with each other that would last through all their years apart.
This part introduces the characters, fills us in on their backstory, sets up the blackmail MOC to her awful cousin Jolene, and ends just after the wedding. This should’ve been a gut punch, but it was all so immature and overdramatic that it negated all my realistic feels.
Part two starts four years later with the mc’s randomly running into each other. Things happen that forces them back together and the plot really goes off the whacky rails. There’re revelations and decisions that make zero sense. Threads thrown in that added really nothing, and for me, an unsatisfactory rush to tie everything up for a hasty HEA.
The majority of the drama is generated from stomping all over the h while she lays around never moving out of the way, which can be alright, I can get behind a bread crust eating HP-martyr h for a while if I’m in the right mood… but I really need her to either grow a little mini-spine or be the recipient of a fair amount of groveling including some comeuppance for the wrong-doers. Neither happens.
Bottom Line- I didn’t love it, but it kept me reading, so I’ll round up. I love soapy reads, but even I have limits…. like when Marlena got possessed by the devil (Days of Our Lives) I was just a kid and still thought that shit was stupid ...more

My biggest grump was the endless flashbacks that IMO didn’t really add anything but unneeded background that constantly hijacked the forward momentum of the story. Every other chapter…. We’d get some interesting tidbit… then boom… flashback. They had a predominately sex-based relationship, so the flashbacks felt like filler.
Bottom Line- I really like this author and will continue to one-click her stuff, but I wasn’t a fan of this one. I’m used to her bringing the crazy/plot twist, so I was expecting something CRAZY… and ended up bored… and frustrated because I was bored. I needed more going on to fill 300+ pages, so I was already struggling…then the flashbacks killed it for me. And when the mystery was finally revealed after being teased for 300+ pages… it was silly… and pretty lame… and didn’t make sense… cuz (view spoiler)[ he killed a dude for kicking/slapping the h, but he’s going to allow some cartoonish gold-digger wannabe OW bring him to his knees!! (hide spoiler)] IMO this would’ve been much better streamlined without the flashbacks and 75-100-ish less pages.

2.5 UGLY LOVE Stars This one is hard to rate. I was RIVETED the first 60% or so in a can’t look away from the toxicity of the terrible characters sort of way, but then things started feeling sloppy (jarring transitions, skipping milestones, etc.), and the author mostly lost me at 75% with a HUGE 18-year time jump followed by a massive info dump. This reminded me of Undeniable with the much older married H, loads of cheating, and decades of wasted time except Alexa isn't really tough.
Tempting the Biker follows the unhealthy relationship of James/Murder and Alexa…and it is MESSY. In a nutshell, James has been unhappily married to Ruthie since they were 15/16ish because she got pregnant with their daughter, Rochelle. Alexa is Rochelle’s BFF and has the hots for James. Shit happens, and the two start a relationship when she’s 17. (my best guess is that he was 30/31ish because his daughter is 15)
I picked this up as a standalone and initially didn’t understand things like why the H hated his wife so much, or why we were jumping over important parts, but after researching a bit I discovered that this book overlaps with Lady & The Biker (the previous book) which is their daughter’s book. I’m not sure if it was planned this way, (I would think chronologically would be easier to follow), but this book’s Part 1 takes place 19-ish years in the past before book two… and Part 2 (the last 25%) takes place after it. Basically, book two makes up the 18-year time jump.
So, I think things would’ve been less confusing, and I might not have been as torn with Alexa chasing after James so hard when Ruthie was shown to be mostly good to her (because she ends up being an evil bitch) But… I’m kind of glad I skipped it because it sounds like Alexa was a terrible mother, and I can typically overlook shitty partners, but shitty parents are harder for me to get past... and the whole Woody Allen theme doesn't do it for me, so I'm leaving that puppy untouched.
Bottom Line- This was hard at times to get through, but I was sucked in. I believed they loved each other… ugly as it was… but it’s tough to swallow. My problems (morale choices aside) were that the blackmailing plot device felt flimsy and not really thought out because I could easily pick holes in it… and we skipped over the majority of their relationship with the massive time jump/info dump and are given few details. I also felt we deserved more resolution after wading through almost 400 pages of their relationship shit show, but it ends abruptly because I guess there’s a novella with their HEA.
Triggers- h is raped partly on-page but she passes out so it fades to black.
Safety-(view spoiler)[James says he’s been faithful to Ruthie the entirety of marriage (15yrs) when Alexa starts pursuing/flirting with him. The first time they're together Ruthie said it’s over/wants divorce cuz she met someone, and Alexa begs him to erase the touch of her rapists. After that they’re hooked and continue the affair while she hangs with his daughter her BFF waiting for him to visit, and he occasionally sexes his wife (mostly off-page), but there is a lot of back and forth… like she knows he just fucked his wife, or she thinks I hope she tastes my pussy on his breath when he leaves.
During the 18-year jump sounds like she was with others (like she was a stripper and got around) and had a 2-yr relationship with the H from book 2 (East) who ends up with her daughter... after he helped raise her. James was actively trying to impregnate his wife all this time (blackmailed), but I’m unsure if he was with club girls also during this time because it does say he stepped back from fucking Alexa when she got serious with the OM his daughter married. This might've been covered in the second book. (hide spoiler)]...more

Humans sought only two things— power over that which they did not control, and the destruction of what they could not control.
I’ve seen this book around for years… I’m intrigued by alien looking aliens and a sucker for cheesy ass covers… but I never took the plunge. I enjoyed their Spider series, so I decided to give it a shot. This husband/wife duo have a formula… The aliens are alien, the world building is in-depth, the relationship is developed thoroughly, the ones I have read have all been forbidden with slow burns.
The blurb sets this up, Macy loved the sea but has feared it for several years. She goes overboard in a storm and is saved by Jax. Jax is a Kraken, a secret octo/human species. Their relationship starts out as a captive/mistrust situation and slowly transforms to friendship then more.
You are by far the greatest treasure I have ever taken from the sea."
Bottom Line- This is all about developing the relationship… slowly. A human falling in love with a tentacled octo-man is a hard sell, but not only did I become attached to this alien… I found their relationship completely believable and their love authentic. BUT It was slow going and not paced with action or smut… so I wouldn't recommend if you’re in the mood for something riveting.

The blurb sets this one up, and the book opens with the plane crash, so things kick off quickly. This made things “cleaner” for the potential romance because we never meet Chris (until the end), so he felt less real. (atleast for me) The romance is a slow-burn (like over halfway for a kiss) which made for a believable, naturally evolving friends-to-lovers romance, but not super riveting. Both Aimee and Tristan are very likable. I felt like I “knew” both of them but wish there was more from Tristan’s POV.

The book starts with Judge being released from prison and joining the local arms dealing biker gang. The gang visits the local bar where he meets Delaney. She is the baby sister of the local Irish mob and has had a crush on Judge forever. Not recognizing her, he asked her to leave with him and she jumped at the chance to cash in her V-card. Stuff happens, and he has his ass beat by her brothers with a warning to stay away. This sets up the rest of the book which mostly focuses on them and their forbidden relationship.
“I didn’t know. In my head, I picture Dell as a kid,” I admitted. “The fuck you let her grow up for?” I asked.
“Well, we tried to stunt her growth with coffee and energy drinks,” Rian said, always the more laid-back jokester of all the brothers. “It didn’t take.”
I liked both mc’s, but I expected more from a mob princess and a badass biker dude. They basically act like teenagers sneaking around where I wanted them to be tougher. Also, the nature of their relationship limited the amount of time they could spend together which hurt the romance development.
Bottom Line- I liked it, but it didn’t have a ton going on. I adored all the characters, enjoyed her brothers, and will definitely read the next book.

I wasn’t sure if I could handle the age gap/statutory rape situation. This is going to be short. It’s a controversial book and will come down to your limits.
