In this novel, Frey plays with tilting reality and forcing the reader to examine and grapple with the emotions and potential implications of the "what if." In fact, this novel is structured into sections of what is, what was, and what if. The mostly brief chapters had me flying though the story, fraught with decisions, sadness, and hope. While I was invested in one of the relationship trajectories far more than the other, I believe that was an interesting part of the individual experience that each reader will discover through this novel.
This would make for an excellent book club pick, with a number of themes to discuss including, facing a terminal illness, the desire for loved ones to be cared for, loss of a partner, and finding purpose.

Tia was subjected to systematic indoctrination in the name of religious upbringing, and her abusive marriage furthered that trauma. While there is certainly hope, as she and her children did escape, it pains me to know there are so many others in the same position that will not be as fortunate.
