As a modern-era, female veteran, I found some of the portrayals of the main character are borderline trope-y, but in the end, I found myself enjoying the characters and rooting for them. ...more

I didn't really like the interview narrative style of the book as I think it could have been much better done with more author progression, but all in all, a pretty fun read if you grew up on hair bands.
I particularly like the stories about Skid Row, as I went to a Bon Jovi concert when I was 10, and they opened for them. Sebastien Bach used f*ck a lot and told everyone not to get jobs, and my mom (who brought me to the concert) kept telling me not to listen to him, that he didn't know what he was talking about. Turns out his on-stage (and offstage) antics are what got them kicked off the Bon Jovi tour. ...more
1. Mass incarceration was caused and perpetuated by several drivers. And as such, the solution is equally complicatedMy takeaways from this book are:
1. Mass incarceration was caused and perpetuated by several drivers. And as such, the solution is equally complicated. With many of the common causes referenced in the mainstream as just a surface level understanding. 2. There's more work to be done in understanding the role of prosecutors and mass incarceration. We need more boundaries to help inform how a prosecutor pursues cases/plea bargains/sentences. 3. We need more investment in defense council. There is a current outsized investment in prosecution, and the "right to an attorney, or one will be provided for you" is not appropriately funded.
I listened to this book, so I probably missed so much of the content. It was really dense, but also really informative. If you're interested in learning more about mass incarceration, this is a must read. ...more

This is an exceptionally difficult book to read as someone who has deployed (albeit to Iraq, not Afghanistan) and as someone who has served in the military for a long time.
Jake Tapper does an incredible job of capturing so many dualities in service - the frustration, the love for each other, the resilience, the f*ckery. It's tough to keep track of all the names/people involved. Tapper does his best with guides and references.
It's definitely worth a read if you're interested in what Afghanistan operations looked like in the day to day.

Probably the most important lesson for me was that all of us have a systems of sexual accelerators and brakes that are informed by so many things. It's important to notice them, and to increase the accelerators while simultaneously reducing the brakes. And your patners accelerators and brakes are likely different from yours. So be patient, non-judgmental, curious, and compassionate to each other.
It's specifically focused on a female audience, but really people of all genders will likely learn something interesting from the book, especially if they have a partner that identifies as female.
It's a little unnerving to read in public :), so I recommend a kindle version if you're a little uncomfortable with people around you possibly knowing your reading about sex or are looking to better understand your sexual self or improve your sex life. ...more
