First of all I just want to say that I was 100% ready to hate this book with a passion. I’m not a fan of Harry Styles or One Direction (haha this has since changed), but I honestly just wanted to read it so that I could form my own opinion of it and let you guys know how I felt about it.

I want to start off by saying that this was a Harry Styles fanfiction on wattpad that received so many views that it got published. Anna Todd has never written anything else and it’s a fanfiction, so I had to take that on board when I started reading it, but I was genuinely surprised.

I understand where people are coming from when they say that Tessa and Hardin’s relationship is abusive. But I watched an interview with the author and I thought it was so interesting. She straight up said that he’s a bad person and that not all people are good. This story is realistic in that sense. Everyone has issues and he’s obviously trying to deal with those, but it’s obvious to anyone who reads this book that he’s trying so hard to change. When this is all he’s ever known, how can he just all of a sudden forget all of his past issues and be a good person? That’s just not realistic. That’s what I liked about After, that it depicted something that wasn’t necessarily good or healthy, but it was real.

I think I may have hated this book if Tessa just took the abuse and kept crawling back to him, but she doesn’t. She sticks up for herself and is a feisty, independent character who knows what she wants, and she will tell him if he needs to get back in line and I really, really appreciated this. I don’t think this book is glamorising abusive relationships. I think it’s teaching people empathy, that not all people are perfect and how to stick up for yourself – not only did she stick up for herself to Hardin, but also to her mother.

Going into this, I thought it would be all about the romance, but it’s not. It’s got so many other aspects in it that revolve around family, friends, university and work life. This isn’t just a love story, it’s a coming of age story. Tessa really grows as a person and realises what she wants in life and I admire that.

Obviously this wasn’t going to be the most beautifully written book out there, but it sure was addicting and I raced through the almost 600 pages in less than 3 days. I grew to really care for these characters and want the best for them.

Just know that I understand where the haters are coming from, but Hardin is changing for the better and is trying so hard to be good for Tessa and Tessa is a badass who can hold her own and is trying to help Hardin get over his past and become a better person. And that’s what matters, that he’s trying and that she has the compassion to help him.

I am so surprised that I didn’t turn out to be one of the people hating on this book, and I’m so glad I gave it a chance. Don’t be embarrassed to read this book because of all of the hate it’s receiving. I say to give it a go and form your own opinion and I ask you not to judge it based on the fact that it’s a fanfiction.

I don’t recommend this book for younger readers as there is explicit sex, swearing, drug and alcohol references and is just generally not for younger readers.

Lucette I'll be honest girl, I flicked through it at work and the writing style kinda grabbed me so I can understand the "addicting" comment. I might have to read it if I feel in the mood! Great review <3

Sheelalipi Sahana Yesss! Even though I did have some initial problems coming to terms with the whole published book thing since I read it while it was on wattpad, I'm not ashamed of it because the story IS gripping and fantastic even though the writing style may not be the greatest! Loved your review and glad you liked it =)

Ayesha I don't like this book, but I'm glad you liked t :)

Kristel But the book is abusive, like it's an abusive relationship i don't understand how that's a good book??? She is going back to the guy after all the times he has mentally abused her. So weak I don't want literature to teach young readers this D:

message 8: by A.K. (new) - rated it 1 star

A.K. There is abuse in this book. How can you give it such a good rating?

message 9: by Tezza (new) - added it

Tezza Indeed, there's abuse, but get out of your box – you can either look at it in a way like „and this, kids, was the script of how I realized bad boys aren't good" or „hey, seems like something clicked." Or „to hell with abusive behavior, I need a Noah in my life." Or you can just sit down, enjoy the style of Todd's writing.

Personally, I kinda enjoyed this book. It made me laugh at several passages and after I finished reading it, I was breathless. You know what? Though this is somehow about the first time and vice versa, I totally found myself asking: could this only happen to someone that naive?!
Nope. It can happen every time. No matter where and how old you are.

I didn't like how it turned out. That's the only thing.
And all that Harry Styles' speech. Who cares? I don't know that dude, but I kinda imagine Hardin in a different way.

Anyway, it's a cool story. I ordered the second book. In German language.

Wendy Garcia Perfect review of the book. It's exactly why I read it too! I read all four and glad I did.

Bernardo Géo Reading it because of this review! <3

Nana You've said exactly the reasons why I liked this book. Awesome.
Also this: "That’s what I liked about After, that it depicted something that wasn’t necessarily good or healthy, but it was real."

Malak Mahmoud Why are you guys all kinda insulting Harry? My cupcake doesn't deserve this. It's not his fault being famous :'(

message 18: by jiejie (new)

jiejie see i read this on wattpad and i hated myself for it for the first two books, but it was freaking addicting, the third book impressed me bc i thought anna's writing had improved a lot and harry's character had developed enough and i thought that was a deeper message on its own so bc i have that view i can outwardly say i've read this book and have something to defend myself with

message 19: by Effie (new) - rated it 1 star

Effie R Jesus Christ, girl, please you're still in time to throw this book in the toilet and redeem yourself by reading good stuff and for fuck's sake don't write reviews if you don't have the competence to do that. Because this book is evil. This book is for fucktards

Gre what? she doesn’t keep crawling back to him? that’s literally all she does ??????? for three whole books ??????????????

Princess You haven't finish the book when you write this right? It's horrible.

And it's marked Y. A when it's supposed to be porn.

Cheap porn

message 30: by Books=Life (new)

Books=Life I totally agree with this review, the series has some flaws but Anna Todd’s character development is clear in the end.

Marisa Hunt Love this review. I understand why people don't like this book, but not all characters/relationships in fiction are perfect. It's obvious the relationship is toxic but it's still interesting to read about.

Sadia Rahman I'm glad you understood Hardin. He is trying to change. People shouldn't judge this book because it's a fanfic. The published book is very good. I really love after

earthdarlin Love this review. Finally, a good one.

message 34: by Vicky (new) - rated it 1 star

Vicky Chamorro what your saying is wrong in so many ways but you're not ready for this conversation and i don't feel like writing five paragraphs to explain why

message 35: by Sarv (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarv Brar The author may justify this by saying she is aware he is a bad person but that does't mean it justifies her romanticizing emotionally abusive relationships. This may not be reccomended to young readers however they do have access to wattpad and the book. This book is a disgrace to literature

message 36: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Allin How have people missed the fact they both had deep abandonment issues that made them 1) attracted to each other and 2) drawn to play them out.. People here seem to have such a shallow take on attachment psychology. I have only seen the film and yes it hurt to watch a lot of the painful things done.. and to see where damage takes someone but he starts to face it towards the end.. that said its hard to love a character who would set out to hurt someone but if he felt judged and holding that level of inner hurt behind such problematic psychological defenses it is understandable.

message 37: by Gabi (new) - rated it 1 star

Gabi W. Did we read the same book? Tessa's isn't a “fiesty, strong character who stands up to Hardin.” She literally falls into bed with him even after he's said the most hurtful, awful things because hey, sex! She's just as toxic as he is, but she doesn't ever give him an consequences unless you count sex. She always gives in.
