Just Mercy

Just Mercy was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I felt a wide range of emotions while reading it, including sadness, anger, and frustration. I knew our system is broken but I wasn't aware to what extent. It was infuriating to read how far behind the times some states are, most notably, Alabama.
Before reading this book, I was fairly confident in my views re: the death penalty, and punishments by imprisonment in general. This book changed my views on some things. Bryan Stevenson is a great person for his tireless work and continuous efforts - I admire his courage and strength. I highly recommend Just Mercy to anyone - there is something to be gained from this book, for everyone.

Thanks, Jaline. This one has stayed with me, well beyond finishing it!

Great review Brandice! I’m glad you enjoyed the read and gained something from it. I do love reading for that fact :-)

Thanks Jasmine, I agree - one of the many (if not the top) perks of reading! :)

Great review, Brandice! I need to read this one, as it has been on my TBR for awhile. You might me interested in reading The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row by Anthony Ray Hinton, who was one of the men Bryan Stevenson helped to get released. The book is coming out in March and I was able to get an ARC through NetGalley but I plan to read Just Mercy first.

A well spoken review, Brandice. I’ve had a copy on my bookshelf for a long while, I need to make time for it!
Great review Brandice. I've had this in my audible library for a long time and need to make time for it.

Thanks Jan! I was able to read a large portion of the book on a plane in one sitting, but last year one of my book clubs chose it, and the majority of the group felt it was best digested in pieces due to the serious nature, so an audiobook sounds like a great choice! Everyone in the group seemed to learn something from it :).

Thanks, DeAnn. It’s awesome that you were able to hear Stevenson speak, I can imagine it would be moving! I’m glad you enjoyed this book too!

I agree, this book opened my eyes quite a bit to just how broken our system is. It was so interesting to see how the law enforcement would actually try to provoke reason to arrest African Americans for the most minor things. For example, the officers that forced Bryan out of his car for a search even though there was no good reason other than him being accused of stealing by his neighbors. Situations like this are so frustrating and I hope it can one day be resolved.

Thanks for sharing, Taylor. It was an eye-opening read and a continually frustrating, flawed system that desperately needs improvement. It is inspiring to read about Stevenson and others who are committed to creating this necessary change.

Great review, Brandice!! This book sounds like it’s a true eye opener when it comes to the criminal injustices that permeate through our justice system. I only have “lightweight” planned this holiday season, but this book is definitely on my TBR shelf.

Thanks LaDonna, I definitely understand. It is a heavier read and takes some time to digest. The movie will be coming out in January 2020. Not sure if you have the book already, but the ebook has occasionally been on sale via Kindle.
