It is unfortunate that I did not end up liking this. It was one of the books I was looking forward to being released this year.
The writing is what led to me not liking it. The author was overly descriptive and I got bored with how descriptive the writing was. It was more of the author telling me things than showing. A good novel has both showing and telling.
The characters were complex and the novel addressed a lot of things that don't normally get discussed. I think it is great that this novel was written but it fell flat.
I imagine there are people who will enjoy the novel. It just was not for me.
I think that the author can write well but I dobt want to read a novel where I am told everything instead of shown.
There were chapters and passages that seemed unnecessary and I do not think I connected with any of the characters.

"I am liking this so far. I imagine the characters will end up being quite complex and maybe even unlikable? I am really excited to get further into this though. I think the writing is quite spectacular. I feel like I am sitting next to the characters and seeing what they are instead of reading."

"I'll finish this book but the author uses way too much description to tell the story. It's kind of boring and hard to stay interested when there are walls of overly descriptive text.
While I do believe this novel deals with important themes I don't think I'm gonna end up rating it highly because of the overly descriptive writing."

"The writing in this novel is great but there needs to be a balance between showing and telling the story. There needs to be a balance between description and dialog. There is not and because of that I have lost interest in the story.
I will continue with it because I still have a desire to find out what happens but I don't care about the characters and have not connected to them."
