Playing for Keeps
The Story
Jason is a womanizer and he knows it. He informs his dates not to expect anything long-term or a commitment, but they tend to show up outside his house shouting at him. Jason knows he can be an asshole, but he also knows he’s a good person with solid friends and family.
His sexy-looking, timid, doormat of neighbor is a project he undertakes. They’ve lived next door to each other for five years and she acts like he’s the neighbor from hell. He does cringe at the memory of peeing on his front lawn the first day he moved into his house. Incidentally, they teach at the same private high school and she won’t sit next him in the teachers’ lounge or talk to him.
One day they hit it off and Jason discovers Haley is adorable. She loves baseball, especially the Yankees. (What’s with women loving Derek Jeter?) She bakes the most delicious brownies, keeps her fridge stocked, and his friends love her. Haley is his new buddy. Jason will keep the obnoxious men away from her, even his man-whore friend Mitch. In fact, he will keep all the men away from Haley. Jason has only her best interests in mind, but that is not what his friends and family as they wear their smirks.
My Thoughts
Playing for Keeps had me laughing so hard my husband turned around to find out what set me off. The characters are over-the-top with their antics, especially Jason’s obsession with food. While the story is somewhat light reading it engaged my emotions. I cared about Jason and Haley’s outcome and cried over their heartache. At times, they are silly and it’s okay because Mathewson exposes their vulnerabilities giving them dimension. Overall, if you are looking for a coming off a dark urban fantasy or just need a pick-me-up this would be an wonderful book to lift your mood.
Grade: B

Glad you enjoyed it Anna! Perfection is really good too and you get some more Haley and Jason!

I'm debating writing a review for this book but everyone pretty much covered the story and writing style. Anyway, I'd rather read Perfection next. More Halen and Jason, you say! Yay! LOL
Honestly Anna, sometimes the short reviews are the best. A few words that speak volumes, it says everything.
Yes...I love where they are at in their lives in Perfection and when you see Jason at first...I was like "what the hey", but then it all made sense and it was very funny!
