Rob looked at her small pinched face and her bleeding knuckles and dark eyes, and he felt something inside him open up. It was the same way he felt when he picked up a piece of wood and started working on it, not knowing what it would be and then watching it turn into something he recognized.
He took a breath. He opened his mouth and let the words fall out. “I know where there's a tiger.”
Sistine stood in the drizzly rain and stared at him, her eyes black and fierce.
She didn't say “A real one?”
She didn't say “Are you crazy?”
She didn't say “You're a big old liar.”
She said one word: “Where?”
And Rob knew then that he had picked the right person to tell.

So lovely, Julie! Was this your first book by Kate DiCamillo?

Ilse,
It's our second here, at the house. I did a read aloud of Because of Winn-Dixie with my daughter last year, and I've been wanting to read more. Are you familiar with her work?

Betsy,
It's only my 2nd book of hers, but I think she writes with a solid, "clean" narrative. This one was quite lovely.

Some years ago I read 'The Magician's Elephant', Julie (and my son did too), which we both liked a lot; last year I have read her most recent one, Louisiana's Way Home which I would wholeheartedly recommend. Your daughter's a lucky one with your book choices :-)!

Michael,
You're basically the same age as my first child, and, somehow, Kate DiCamillo books were not a part of our nightly read-alouds. We missed Neil Gaiman, too, in that round. Don't worry, I read plenty of books to him, but I guess it just goes to show you that you will always have holes in your reading life, despite your best efforts.
Which one was your favorite of hers??

Ilse,
I forgot about the more recent Louisiana book. Thank you for reminding me, and thank you for the compliment you've paid me here. I'm sure your children have had as vibrant an early reading life as mine have. We are fortunate to be surrounded by books and thank God for libraries!! What would we do without them??

I've read almost everything DiCamillo has published (and it is all worth reading!), but my favorite will always be The Tale of Despereaux. For what it's worth.
I loved this one, too, Julie, as well as Louisiana's Way Home, and Raymie Nightingale. I've heard really good things about The Magician's Elephant, but I'm not sure you can really go wrong with her stories. Love your review, your excerpt, and need to add this one, too!
