it was ok
bookshelves: unable-to-finish

It is rare that I don't finish a novel for book club - especially one that I was looking forward to. But I am on page 160 and nothing has happened. And I'm fairly sure nothing is going to happen. Perhaps at another time, I would appreciate page after page of well-crafted sentences with no plot. But for now, I'm not going to endure another minute of boredom.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ 160 pages is more than a fair go. Sorry this one didn't work out, Lisa, but good for you not forcing yourself to finish it. There's such a sense of liberation in DNF'ing boring books! Hope your next one is much more interesting.

Diane Barnes I've had book club assignments like that. I used to feel I had to suffer through it for the sake of discussion, but now I just fess up and admit I couldn't take it.

I just can't torture myself now - even though I realize I might have enjoyed this book in a different frame of mind...

Mrtruscott “I like the cover,” I say, in a shallow comment that tells a lot about my taste in books....

Lisa (NY) Mrtruscott wrote: "“I like the cover,” I say, in a shallow comment that tells a lot about my taste in books...." Me too. I might have liked this book in a more patient, contemplative mood.

Judith E Time to let it go, let it go, let it go.......

david I know, I know, Lisa. I just stopped reading a book myself. If you don't feel it, you don't feel it.

JimZ Well that is too bad Lisa...I think this was my first read of Williams and I absolutely loved it. But I did not like his novel, John. I have at least 2 more of his on my TBR list...

Cathrine ☯️ I'm really interested in what your book club thought. Or did you skip that meet up?

Lisa (NY) Cathrine ☯️ wrote: "I'm really interested in what your book club thought. Or did you skip that meet up?" In a rare show of unity, we all disliked it and most of us could not bring ourselves to finish. I can see why a few people might love it for the beautiful writing but I'm puzzled by the overall high ratings.

I should have stopped. There is something about the writing that lures you in, expecting something, but how about a story!

Bianca I'm struggling with this one. I don't hate it, but I find myself only reading a few pages and then setting aside opting to watch Schitts Creek or the French Open. I'm on page 190. I guess I should finish it since I invested so long, although I feel pressured to read it faster as I have 5 library books on my bedside table.

Liz I felt similarly at p. 160 but persevered, and the last half of the book was actually much better! Things happened. :)

Nancy Liz, that is encouraging! I’m debating whether to let it go or persevere. I do like his humorous way of describing things, even laughed out loud a few times. However, I find the long story telling too tedious. I end up skimming. Perhaps I could enjoy it more if I had no other cares in the world, an Irish whiskey in my hand, and Liam Neeson reading to me by the fire...

Kathy Oh, you should have stuck around. It took me until 40% in to fall in love with this one but fall I did. Gorgeous

Lisa (NY) Kathy wrote: "Oh, you should have stuck around. It took me until 40% in to fall in love with this one but fall I did. Gorgeous" 40% is a long time - but I'm glad you loved it!

Rebecca Moore This is where I am at right now. 43% and really struggling.

Robin I can’t get into it, but am thinking of switching to an audio book version as others have recommended.
