Finlay Donovan Is Killing It (Finlay Donovan, #1)

You know that scene at the beginning of The Lion King where Rafiki walks out to the edge of Pride Rock and hoists baby Simba in the air to be presented to all the animals of the Pride Lands? The one where the opening chant of “The Circle of Life” blares in the background? "Nants’ ingonyama, bakithi, baba. Sithi hu ‘ngonyama.”
Well I’m Rafiki and this book will be Simba anytime any of my suburban book club member friends (“SBCMFs”) ask me what they should read next in 2021.
Not to say only SBCMFs will enjoy this romp about a barely-scraping-by newly-divorced writer and mother of two who’s mistaken for a hit woman, but man those MFs are gonna love it.
I did too. 4.5 stars.
My appreciation goes to St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books and the author for granting my wish to read an advanced copy via NetGalley. Thanks to you, my 2021 recommendations are already killing it.

I still can't figure out what exactly a wig scarf is??? I even googled it. Is it just like a bandana with hair coming out the bottom?

You make me laugh, Regina. Somehow the Lion King reference makes perfect sense when you say it!! 🤣 Delightful review.

Aww, I'm glad Kat! This book made me laugh more than a few times, so I guess I wanted my review to reflect its tone. Thanks so much for your kind words.

Cute review, Regina! I passed on this ARC due to time constraints, and I really wish I would've had time for it. I will get around to it eventually, one way or the other. :)

I don’t know how I missed this review, but I’m glad I read it. Sounds like so much fun. Especially the part about the hair scarf! 😂. I’m going to add this. 💕💕

Okay, you can't hold up a book that isn't physical. If you love it, get yourself that copy! I always smile at your imagery and think you must have been in theatre, am I right? I want to sit and listen to you telling or reading a story. It would be the highlight of my day.

Too funny, I suppose you've got a valid point there Carolyn! And I really appreciate the kind words. I was never in theater, but my background is in film marketing. I worked at Disney during a few iterations of Lion King releases. ;)

Working for Disney! "All Whole New World" sticks in my head, with comedy's greatest performance by Robin Williams. I have both CD soundtracks from the 1990s. You are kind to look for some reviews, which I have not written lately. I read awhile, then catch-up in bulk. Here is one from 2019, by a nearby Pinawa, Manitoba author, whose trippy historical reincarnation novel is popular worldwide. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Should you read it, I can just see the hilarity ready made for your review. How only a Manitoban could take the grim subject of a recovering burn victim, a porno actor whose you-know-what was amputated.... and blend it with a majestic quartet of fable-like historical adventures pertaining to reincarnation, occurring largely in a monestary.
