Boundary Waters (Cork O'Connor #2) by William Kent Krueger (Author), David Chandler (narrator)
I probably jinxed former sheriff, Cork O'Connor, by wishing that book #2 would have a lower body count than book #1. Nine months after the last book Cork and his estranged wife are on better terms, his hamburger stand has had a good season, and Cork is much healthier, having quit smoking, taken up running, and actually just run his first marathon. Things are looking good for Cork and his family.
Then a man comes town, looking for his daughter. It turns out a lot of other folks are looking for her. Some hopefully good guys and some definite very bad guys want to find Shiloh. Bodies have already dropped and more continue dropping as the story starts. Cork, some FBI agents, and a ten year old Ojibwe boy and his father, head into the wilderness to look for Shiloh. The area is beautiful and harsh but at least Cork, the boy, and his father know it's ways and they will be covering it mostly by canoe.
There are a lot of people involved in this story. Along the way we learn more about the Ojibwe ways and that's one of my favorite things about this series. There is a very strong feel for the Ojibwe connection to animals and the land and that connection plays a part in this story. There is also a very strong message about family and a growing camaraderie that comes from fighting on the same side, for what is right and good.
This story was often tough to read, with all the bloodshed and cruelty. The tension of the hunt, chase, and running for one's life was strong. Now on to book #3 where I won't have my hopes up that everyone stays alive.

Wonderful review, Marilyn! I loved this book. So incredibly atmospheric. Book three is also a winner. The end was SO intense! It was the first time a thriller made me cry I was so worried!

I appreciate knowing that the author has thoughtful underlying themes, and they aren't simply whodunits. Terrific review Marilyn!

Yes it does...there is so much that you will learn as the people in the books travel the area and live in the area.

The series is much about the area and the Ojibwe people as it is about the individual character of Cork O'Connor. The background of the area and people is very interesting. Thanks, Jan!

Fantastic review Marilyn, I like the part about the Ojibwe tribe but maybe the cruelty wouldn't work for me. I'm happy you liked it!

Thank you, Susan...this was very violent so it's best knowing that before going in (or not) 💕

Great honest review. Is the bloodshed between humans? Is it important to the story? I'm just wondering if I should give the series a try I loved the prequel :)

The bloodshed is between the humans and it's all part of the story. Give the first book (#1) a try and that will tell you if you want to go on. The human nature part of these books is so very good. I couldn't handle it if all this bloodshed was animals but fake people is a bit easier to take (even though it still makes me very sad when good fake people meet bad ends).

You totally jinxed Cork, Marilyn! Haha, joking of course. Great review, and I'm wondering how the audio narration was for you. I have yet to pick up the third in the series, and think I may try one of his latest stand-alone first.

Yep, I have people falling like dominoes with my Cork jinx 😂 It seems that there are two choices for a narrator with the Cork series and I've been using the audios narrated by David Chandler. I'm on my third Cork audio by him and I hope I can stick with him the entire way since I like him.
One thing about the Chandler narration is that a lot of the guys sound the same but with so many characters in each book, it'd be hard to make that many distinctive voices without some of them sounding like a cartoon (cartoon voices mess up a story) 🥴😁
I listened to Ordinary Grace, narrated by Rich Orlow. I can't remember his narration 😕

Wonderful review Marilyn. I enjoyed this book too but lost interest in the series part way through the next book. I hope you like that one more than I did (I DNFd). ❤️

Thank you, Pat, interesting...I've started it so we'll see how I like it. 😊 At the moment it's a lot less "active" than book #2.

😂 I'm hooked...I can be very obsessive like that so now I will be listening to the audios (or reading when I can't check out the audio) one right after another. I can't even play hard to get anymore 😁

I am about 75% done and I was also thinking that I was tired of all the random killing. Some were literally just bystanders.

Kay, the entire series (I've read 11 books now) has an unbelievable body count. It certainly doesn't get better in most of the following books. Very OTT so that's something to keep in mind before going forward with the series.
