I finished Assembly last September (2021) and have been thinking about it ever since. I'm stunned that it didn't get the marketing push in the US that would have gotten it into all of the readers' hands who would have no doubt sat mesmerized while they read it in a single sitting, relating to and learning from her narrator's observations and lived reality, struck by Brown's talent and the polished, sophisticated style that defies Assembly's debut status. It deserved that much and more. And yet, I can't compose the words that would do it justice in a review.
If you haven't read it, read it. If you need a push, access my friend Claire's review at this link: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

"I love you, he said, a timid voice, that first time. After four pints of deniability. Now it’s with an everyday, pragmatic brusqueness. Love you! When I leave for work. Love you! Before we hang up. And sometimes also, tongue in cheek, je t’aime!"

"The lawn extends in all directions into geometric eruptions of flowers and leafy plants. Further back, stone steps lead down to a mossy fountain, framed by hedges and still more flowers. It’s all beautifully cultivated, with just a touch of overgrown wildness. Presumably achieved via attentive gardening."

Carol, I finished it a week ago and am still mulling over it as well. Your pointy last sentence is awesome - an excellent aphoristic encapsulation of this powerful book.

Thank you, Ilse. It confounds me whenever I try to describe it; I'm glad you found that effective.

I am reading it now Carol, it is a cracking book, the kind of debut worth making a fuss about, yes certainly a hard book to do justice to

Good deal. I’ll be looking forward to your review when you’re done, Jan-Maat.
