I was unsure if I would like this Heyer book based on reviews that I've read, but I read the first chapter anyway. The consensus being that this book is more historical fiction than romance. And not just historical fiction but non-fiction war history, which is one of my least favorable topics to read. With the book being about five hundred pages, I don’t care to skim over the incredibly detailed war tidbits to get to the romance and wit I appreciate from this author.

I got that sense from the first chapter and decided I wouldn't enjoy this much. Glad you liked it though! 😊

Appreciate your words. I feel like the title and cover may scare away history aficionados that would love the book.

Thank you, Chantel! Reading a detailed fiction on war is the equivalent of purgatory for me. 🤣

I read it more for the history than the romance, and I read it in parallel with the original journal of Harry Smith. The romance, such as it was, came into its own in the final few chapters, around Waterloo.

Glad you enjoyed it so much, Andrew! Sounds like you found the perfect combo - interest in history and a supplemental resource - to go with this book.

This book is actually about my relatives we have papers of Harry Smiths letters laying around locked in a safe amongst other belongings of his,I got this book purely to learn more about my family history but I definitely found that it’s definitely not my kind of story I started getting into a reading slump sadly to say because I was really excited, it was fascinating in the beginning to learn nothing in my family has changed when it comes to being stubborn haha but I hope some day I actually manage to read it fully :(
