it was amazing

I think that Borowski has to be considered a victim of the Holocaust since he committed suicide after the war (as perhaps Primo Levi must). These stories about Auschwitz were depressing but beautifully written. It is a shame he died so young.

Judyta Szacillo He was a talented writer, true. I had to read his stories as a teenager as they were part of the school curriculum at the time. I found it traumatic and never searched for his writings again, but I understand the importance of knowing the testimony of those crimes against humanity.

Matthew Devereux ∞ Hi Judyta. Thanks for your comment. Was that in Poland? Is it on the school curriculum there?

message 3: by Judyta (new)

Judyta Szacillo Yes, it was in Poland. A selection of Borowski's short stories was a part of the school curriculum, along with Hanna Krall's "To outwit God" - both highly traumatising reads. We read them in high school, at the age of 18 or 19. But that was over 20 years ago and I'm not sure if those authors are still included in the curriculum.

Matthew Devereux ∞ Interesting. I will check out Hanna

Chanii I wish this book was mandatory reading for every high school student in the world.
