did not like it
bookshelves: dnf

DNF at 57%. I feel like I’ve read a completely different book to everyone else?

I went in with high expectations due to the hype but ended up being disappointed. A great concept but it was poorly done.

The lack of world building made me feel disconnected from the entire story.
The characters lacked depth and the dialogue was cringy, especially the letters 😖
The plot stumbled along, and the central war element was majorly underdeveloped. There was no suspense whatsoever from what you’d expect whilst living through a war.

I just don’t get it 😞

Nicki Agreed! I don’t understand the hype. I struggled to get through it thinking I was missing something

sophie Such a shame because it had so much potential!

message 3: by Daria (new)

Daria I read this right after finishing The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy (similar letter premise) and it was WORLDS better!!

Ooo I’ll check it out, thanks!!

message 5: by Cate (new) - rated it 1 star

Cate I DNF’d at 60%. right there with you!

Agnieszka Literally my thoughts. DNF at 50-something, I was so confused. Was I reading a different book than everyone else fr... ??? The worldbuilding was absolutely awful, the magic system (magic realism more like) didn't make much sense, the articles and letters written by the characters who were supposedly brilliant writers were absolutely cheesy, the characters didn't behave nor speak like normal people and I JUST DON'T GET IT

Zandra Im so happy im not the only one!! I ended up pushing through and reading the whole thing but im convinced I read a different book because i don’t understand the hype😂

sophie @Cate @Agnieszka @Zandra I’m glad I’m not the only one as well!! Agree it felt cheesy, couldn’t stop cringing!!

message 9: by oli (new)

oli Im like 50 pages in and im feeling a book slump coming on

sophie oli wrote: "Im like 50 pages in and im feeling a book slump coming on"

Oh noooo 😭 Quit while you’re ahead!!

Alana Kelly Yes! It just felt like a whole bunch of booktok tropes thrown into one book

sophie Alana wrote: "Yes! It just felt like a whole bunch of booktok tropes thrown into one book"

The booktok hype set my expectations too high so I ended up just being let down 😕

Dana I have 40 pages left and I might not finish. I said the same thing to myself, am I reading a different book than everyone else?

Sorry you aren’t enjoying it either! It’s a shame because I really wish I did love it, but yeah I feel like I read a totally different book

message 15: by Katie (new) - rated it 1 star

Katie DNF @ 13%. It’s just so bland!

sophie @Katie it really was!!

message 17: by Utkarsh (new)

Utkarsh I have never seen you DNFing, Sophie. I am sorry that it sucked. Hope your next read is better.

sophie @Utkarsh it just wasn’t for me in the end! thank you!☺️

paula ♡ So sad to that you didnt like it. Hope the next one its better! <33

allie woolsey ugh i also dnf’d 🫠🫠

Emms-hiatus(ish)-if I write it, will you read it? This is why I've been hesitant to pick this book up even though it's been on my TBR forever. Just a gut feeling that it's overhyped and I'm going to hate it LOL

sophie @paula I really wanted to but just didn’t work for me ☹️ thank you love <33

giulsxx omg i don’t think i’ve ever seen a dnf for dr😃 i’m so sorry it didn’t deliver baby😭😭 i hope your next read will be better🩶✨

Casey Bee agreed

Noorj agreed, honestly the story is so rushed. the world building and especially the romance. and there is really no rivals.

April (catching up) So sorry that you didn't enjoy this like many of us did 🥺 I do agree that the world building was lacking. I hope you love your next read so much bby 💗

Michelle I think everyone goes into this book thinking it’s fantasy and it’s really not, at best it’s lit fic with some romance and a touch of magic with the typewriters! So sorry you didn’t love it and the expectations fell flat for you.

Marielli (lellireads) Same. I also DNF'd this book

Charles I also got caught up in the hype, and read the whole book and to me the ending (which you fortunately missed) was the worst part of the whole story.

Nicky Agreed.

Amanda Thanks for the review. I only have a hundred pages left and I don't want to finish. Too many cliches and not enough depth. I decided to take a break from the book to see if I want to finish later because I felt bad DNFing this far into the book. Thank you for your review. I don't feel bad stopping now.

Reader OMG me too!

message 33: by Madysen (new) - added it

Madysen Goff i just can’t even get into this book everytime i pick it up i read the first chapter and can’t go any further

Daniela Good for you for DNFing, I wish I'd listened to my gut feeling that told me to DNF basically from the beginning. I pushed through because I wanted to know what the hype is about but it was so not worth it. People criticise Twilight but it seems 20 years later YAF has hardly evolved.
