Every Rating & Review for 2024

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
(A-) 83% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/10/2024
Notes: On ugly truth, fading youth, dead appeals, courage, morals, community quarrels and fallible humans spoiling ideals.

The Arctic Incident by Eoin Colfer and Nathaniel Parker
(A-) 82% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/11/2024
Notes: Wherein former foes go quid pro quo—to boot, two villains team—it's a do-or-die trust exercise: misgivings to esteem.

BRZRKR: Fallen Empire #1 by Mattson Tomlin
(B+) 79% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/11/2024
Notes: More plot than fists, it's twists on twists, a lucid, lively story, still lots of blood, but not a flood (not ludicrously gory).

Kaya #14 by Wes Craig
(B+) 77% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐ – 01/12/2024
Notes: Big setting-shift (full urban drift), its action scenes are thrilling, a revolt/despot/messiah plot (it's prophecy-fulfilling).

Zorro: Man of the Dead #1 by Sean Gordon Murphy
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/13/2024
Notes: Bit farfetched, synthetic/stretched, Quixotic tale indeed, while art's first-rate, no charm nor weight to either hero lead.

Book of Butcher #1 by James Tynion IV and Tate Brombal
(A-) 80% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/13/2024
Notes: A monster guide, real legends tied, all real plum information, its story bits, though, rarely hit, it takes a plot vacation.

Superman '78: The Metal Curtain (2023-2024) #3 by Robert Venditti
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/14/2024
Notes: Sprinkling in wrinkles: new relationshippy drama, broken trust (things not discussed) and painful post-fight trauma.

Edenwood #3 by Tony S. Daniel
(C+) 66% | Almost Satisfactory | ⭐⭐ – 01/15/2024
Notes: Who's who and why are facts denied, its storytelling sucks, connects no dots, all scattershot, its scenes just run amok.

Spawn Origins Collection, Volume 16 by Todd McFarlane and Brian Holguin
(B+) 77% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐ – 01/19/2024
Notes: Hardly Spawn here early on, and hardly more than build, stuff introduced, but lacking juice, the arc's left unfulfilled.

The Woman in Me by Britney Spears
(A-) 80% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/22/2024
Notes: A kind of jailed-princess tale (bit Nineteen Eighty-Four), on wounding feuds, abusive dudes, relentless grief and more.

Spawn Origins Collection, Volume 17 by Todd McFarlane and Brian Holguin
(B+) 77% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐ – 01/24/2024
Notes: Hot to start, super art, just bold and consequential, its back half tales, though, really pale: worse art and nonessential.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #1 by Marv Wolfman
(B+) 79% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/25/2024
Notes: Apocalypse now! The art really wows, a main event feel, and awful ambitious, but gets repetitious, diminishing zeal.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #2 by Marv Wolfman
(B+) 79% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/26/2024
Notes: More warm than hot, a steady plot, not boring nor berserk: task-assigning, scope-defining, wrenches tossed in works.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #3 by Marv Wolfman
(B+) 79% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/27/2024
Notes: A multiverse blend, just plot at both ends, it's mostly big action: historical eras, team-up chimeras, ad hoc interactions.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #4 by Marv Wolfman
(A-) 80% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/29/2024
Notes: More people die, Pariah cries (which seems his only role), and quite a few quite varied views on dying (fate and toll).

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #5 by Marv Wolfman
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/30/2024
Notes: Seeing is believing, convincing doubting Thomases; just shocked expressions, info sessions, partnering and promises.

The Eternity Code by Eoin Colfer and Nathaniel Parker
(A-) 82% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/30/2024
Notes: Wherein heroes heist, get truly iced, betray and get betrayed, get up from fails (adapt, prevail), and favors get repaid.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #6 by Marv Wolfman
(A-) 82% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 01/31/2024
Notes: Heroes are foes, a just go with it flow, it's really high gear if not always clear, no story protraction, all narrative action.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #7 byMarv Wolfman
(A-) 82% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/02/2024
Notes: A fortress raid, distress displayed, expounds essential lore (forbidden learning, gods returning), selfless death in war.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #8 by Marv Wolfman
(A-) 80% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/03/2024
Notes: A kind of resetting/hiatus (no sweating), on Earth it's quite serene, a hero dies but no one cries—self-sacrifice unseen.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #9 by Marv Wolfman
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/04/2024
Notes: Lots of killing (not-so-thrilling/undistinguished culling), cool battle scenes if brief and lean: all rather impact-dulling.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #10 by Marv Wolfman
(A-) 80% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/06/2024
Notes: Crescendoing well, its seriousness swells, the bonus story's fine: but never jells (told parallel) and doesn't quite align.

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #11 by Marv Wolfman
(A-) 83% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/08/2024
Notes: Post-merger pains, what's lost/remains, a single earth rebuilt, beyond repair for hero spares (intense survivor's guilt).

Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) #12 by Marv Wolfman
(A-) 83% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/09/2024
Notes: Bit convenient (logic-lenient), but epic all-around: right nightmarish, heroes perish, and the foe just won't stay down.

History of the DC Universe (1986) #1 by Marv Wolfman
(A-) 80% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/11/2024
Notes: No story here (it's info-geared), a Time-Life textbook feel, great overviews, myth-melding too, and tons of art appeal.

History of the DC Universe (1986) #2 by Marv Wolfman
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/12/2024
Notes: Though hardly deep (a shallow sweep), it's certainly extensive, a hero blitz in bite-sized bits, it's never lore-intensive.

The Opal Deception by Eoin Colfer and Nathaniel Parker
(A-) 83% | Very Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 02/26/2024
Notes: Wherein shifts are felt, convictions melt, dormancies awaken, evil aims go Hunger Games, and leaps of faith are taken.

Spawn Origins Collection, Volume 18 by Todd McFarlane, Brian Holguin and Steve Niles
(B) 73% | More than Satisfactory | ⭐⭐⭐ – 02/29/2024
Notes: The artwork sucks (it's clear as muck), a needless story strain: not that plot's so great or taut, just art's a mental drain.

Spawn Origins Collection, Volume 19 by Todd McFarlane and Brian Holguin
(B) 74% | More than Satisfactory | ⭐⭐⭐ – 03/04/2024
Notes: Art is intense but terribly dense (all speed lines and shapes), plots are too trite, its pivotal fights are nebulous scrapes.

Spawn Origins Collection, Volume 20 by Todd McFarlane and Brian Holguin
(B-) 71% | Satisfactory | ⭐⭐⭐ – 03/10/2024
Notes: A pain to read (art misleads), shambles from the start, plot twists are nice but not worth the price of noisy/blobby art.

Zorro: Man of the Dead #2 by Sean Gordon Murphy
(B+) 77% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐ – 03/10/2024
Notes: Follows-up fine, but nothing sublime, more of the same, battles are fought, advances the plot: just fanning the flames.

Kaya #15 by Wes Craig
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 03/10/2024
Notes: All meeting/meshing/character-fleshing, attitudes defogged, fairly succinct, everyone is distinct, never a tedious slog.

Kaya #16 by Wes Craig
(B+) 77% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐ – 03/13/2024
Notes: Tepid tension, light dissension, loyalty conniption, new friends get close, drug overdose: just follow the prescription!

House of Slaughter #21 by James Tynion IV and Tate Brombal
(B+) 76% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐ – 03/14/2024
Notes: Nothing shocking, lots of talking, delegations meeting, passive jibes between the tribes: in league but still competing.

Superman '78: The Metal Curtain (2023-2024) #4 by Robert Venditti
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 03/16/2024
Notes: Just simple fun, not overdone, it goes by pretty quick, bit standard-plot, though hits the spot, plain Cold War politics.

Superman '78: The Metal Curtain (2023-2024) #5 by Robert Venditti
(B+) 78% | Good | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ – 03/17/2024
Notes: With lots of talk and taking stock, it highlights motivations, strife abroad, and stacks the odds before the culmination.

Jayson Mary ♥ wrote: "What are your new goals hun?"

Still putting that together, but probably same as always:
- Read 150 total books
- Read at least one non-fiction book
- Read at least one 500+ page book
- Read at least one mega bestseller
- Do at least one buddy-read

Some more will likely come to mind between now and 2024 😅

Mary ♥ All great goals! How about reading a genre you're not usually into? Can I also suggest a non-fiction: The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk. I'm almost done but I keep crying, I have to stagger my reading.

Mary ♥ Also how do you usually count your comics in the reading goal?

Thanks for the recommendation! I will look into it and keep it in mind :)

With my reading goal, it really doesn't matter until December. I start off with something fairly reasonable, if I were to read a lot of long books. I have a rule of not decreasing my goal, but I'll raise it throughout the year when it's clear that I'll make it. In December, when I have an idea of what's possible, I set a goal that's actually a challenge to complete by the end of year.

I hear you. It's like having to read for school; nothing makes you hate your favorite book like being graded on your interpretation.

Jayson TL wrote: "And dealing with people who act like its your fault if that "must have item" isn't in stock or prices go up"

Yeah, "the customer is always right" is not a motto I put a lot of stock in.

Alexandra Elend Wolf These all look like super fun and taste-broadening goals! I hope they all satisfy and you can tackle as many of them as you want.

message 24: by Chad (new)

Chad Have you made any decisions on what you'll be reading to fill these criteria?

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "These all look like super fun and taste-broadening goals! I hope they all satisfy and you can tackle as many of them as you want."

Thank you very much, Alexandra! It should be all attainable. I did them all last year except for the five "forgotten" books goal. It sort of all depends on my mood. I don't want to be putting off some of these indefinitely and then have to squeeze in a 500-page book or a five-novel series by the end of December. Probably I'll try to cross them off as quick as possible 😅

Jayson Chad wrote: "Have you made any decisions on what you'll be reading to fill these criteria?"

I have definite ideas for some of them, but mostly I'll use the goals to help decide on which books to read. I'm entirely a mood reader, so this all depends on what I feel like at the time.

In some cases I can knock out multiple goals at once. For example, I have a hardcover box set of The Chronicles of Narnia that could satisfy all three of the novel series, forgotten books and household name goals. Or alternatively, I could settle the series goal with audiobooks. I've got options.

message 27: by Chad (new)

Chad The Chronicles Of Narnia is a childhood favorite of mine. I've read through all 7 books multiple times. Have you decided what order you are going to read them in chronological or when they were released? I recommend when they were released or the origin story won't mean as much to you.

Also I love the cartoon of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe they made when I was a kid. That's how I found out about the books too. The BBC made some good adaptations of the first 4 books in the late 80's. I actually like those better than the more recent movies.

Thanks! I actually did a lot of research into that too. Ultimately, I plan to read by release date the first time around, even though the box set I own isn't arranged that way—I don't think any of them are. After that, I'll go chronological during my inevitable audiobook reread sometime down the line.

I saw the first of the recent movies in theatres, but haven't seen the rest. Growing up in Canada, the 1980s BBC adaptations were on TV a bunch, but I think I may have only casually caught them flipping through the channels when I was younger. It was never appointment viewing or anything. I probably never watched consecutive episodes. In any case, I've only seen a handful and remember virtually nothing.

I have a loose understanding of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but this will be my first time actually reading any of the books.

I still have my copy from when I was a kid. It's in release order. They all used to be. It wasn't until I was an adult that I started seeing them put The Magician's Apprentice first. It doesn't even make sense to read them that way because there are things that happen in it that won't mean anything until you have at least read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Growing up in the U.S., only PBS would show any British television and I don't think the adaptations ever aired here. I actually found them as a box set at Costco in the early aughts. PBS is where I'd watch Doctor Who as well.

I remember I had a paperback box set as a kid that I got handed down from my cousin. Never read it, mostly used it as a bookend. Anyway, it had such 1980s box art, so I assume it's of the era. That had books listed chronologically. So, I assume sometime in the 1980s (at the latest) they must have changed publishers or else decided chronological was the way to go.

I watched a good deal of PBS as a kid. Got the Seattle KCTS feed. Mostly was the television destination on weekends when the only thing else on were infomercials. So, for me, it was a lot of reruns of The Joy of Painting and The New Yankee Workshop.
