TBH two stars is probably being generous so 1.5 is the best I can give

From the stilted dialogue, to the very tell-not-show style of writing, to the far fetched storyline, this book really wasn't for me. When I read the prologue I thought the "once upon a time" style of writing was due to it being a fairytale and foolishly assumed it would change once the story properly began. However it continued in a similar vein. This just didn't allow me to connect with any of the characters, who with their lack of emotion and realistic reactions came across as wooden and rather one dimensional.

The story and writing was very simplistic, not terrible, not poor, just - basic. I need to feel the emotions of the characters in order to connect with them. Now I'm not quoting directly but "I was shocked" "I was happy" "I was excited" is not showing emotion in the way that I need.

The storyline with Zell's mother (view spoiler) sailed just a little too far from the shores of believability, particularly given her abrupt change of mind a few hours later when she met with Quinn. Up to that point I could have been persuaded of the validity of her actions with the phrase "stockholm syndrome", but that wouldn't explain her sudden vault face. I also found myself rolling my eyes to how the heroine seemed to be totally unaffected by (view spoiler). I got to just past 70% but really just could not continue any further.

Gabbibuu Omg... the sinister collection keeps getting worse

Birjis Should I read the next book of this series or not. Sorry it was dull for you, I'm thinking of jumping to my favourite authors books of this series.

Louise H - ⭐ Life in the Book Lane Reviews ⭐ I've found some good new authors via these types of collection before, but am very disappointed by this one. First of all I wouldn't have called any of them dark or sinister. The first two were the grittiest IMO but nothing unusual or very different from the vast majority of paranormal/fantasy books to be honest (all those shifter books aside) .

It seems that the strongest authors (other than K Webster) are all towards the end, which is a shame because I've really lost interest in this series and I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling like that. People are probably going to miss out on the better books.

I totally agree - though I WILL be reading Lexi C Foss' contribution and A Zavarelli's. I've mainly read the second authors mafia books but enjoyed her retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

Looking at who is left I think these are the better authors in the series. I enjoy A Zavarelli's work, though she is more of a mafia/romantic suspense author.
I would highly recommend Lexi's work and though I've never read Ker Dukey I've also heard great stuff about her.
Anna Edwards is a little hit and miss with me, her books lack the depth that I need.
I've only read one Cora Kenborn book (from the Cavalieri Della Morte series) which I did enjoy. However that was romantic suspense so how she will handle this genre remains to be seen.

Birjis I'm looking forward to A. Zavarelli's book only, the rest I think I'm going to skim so I can sate my soul that I finished the series. 😩

I don't blame you. I know I'll enjoy that one and Lexi's book, so that's something to look forward to.

Geraldine I was expecting more of a reaction to Jackie reuniting with her daughter. Nope didn't get it.

Totally agree - it lacked in any emotion and that's a deal breaker for me.

Chris I've started reading this one and I never finished it. Not sure if I'll ever do so... Just couldn't keep me focused. Wonderful review!

Thanks Chris - at times it read like something a teenager would have written. Some great ideas but poor execution.
