For Spacious Skies: Katharine Lee Bates and the Inspiration for "America the Beautiful"
by
by
"For Spacious Skies" traces the life of Katherine Lee Bates and how she came to write "America The Beautiful."
Bates grew up loving books and writing, which was not the norm for girls in her time period. She eventually went to college and traveled. As she traveled, she was stuck with the awesome beauty of America and wrote poems about our lovely nation. Her poems were published in magazines and a final version was eventually set to music.
Illustrations depict historical time frame and the sights that inspired lines in the song.
i.e. "For amber waves of grain."
