“There is not love of life without despair about life.”

“This goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory, this most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire, why, it appears no other thing to me than a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. What a piece of work is a man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”

“I have always disliked the morning, it is too responsible a time, with the daylight demanding that it be 'faced' and (usually when I wake for I wake late) with the sun already up and in charge of the world, with little hope of anyone usurping or challenging its authority. A shot of light in the face of a poor waking human being and another slave limps wounded into the light-occupied territory.”

Angela Meyer, thank you for recommending S.A. Jones' The Fortress. It doesn't sound like what I might normally read, but I like to be surprised and I like to read widely, so I'm looking forward to reading this soon. It sounds intriguing. Thanks again.
Hi Kris, no problem! I'm always trying to read 50 things at once. Just had a look at your profile and am looking forward to browsing your shelves. I joined Goodreads about a month ago, and am (slowly) adding and categorising. It's great fun.
Angela, thank you for accepting my friend request. What great books you are reading, even outside the historical fiction course!
Hi Angela,
