Rasmenia Massoud was born just outside of Washington D.C. somewhere during the era of Hunter S. Thompson vs. Nixon, but never lived there. She just happened to be in the area. She grew up in Colorado where she made a living with both blue and white collars at various times in her life before deciding that collars are not good, and that writing stories was very good.

In addition to spending several years in various Colorado towns, she has also lived in Florida, Pennsylvania, Indiana, England, Paris, and the French countryside; traveling to a number of states and countries in between. All the while, thinking deeply about the places and the people she encounters, and writing things down. She looks for the cracks, the scars under the flesh, gath

I'm afraid I can't remember quite that far back. It's likely that it was something with a golden spine about puppies. Or Dr Seuss. Or a Little Engine That Could. Since that answer is dull and vague, I'll tell you the first book I read that really knocked me out. It was 'Island of the Blue Dolphins' by Scott O'Dell. It's a children's novel about a girl stranded alone on a desert island who learns to fend for herself for several years. Being a very small and lonely girl myself, it floored me to imagine someone like me could be strong, brave, and self-sufficient. I learned strange new words like 'abalone' and 'cormorant'. It was the first book I read that left a strong imprint in my brain. That imprint remains there to this day, and the battered paperback still remains on my shelf.(less)

Laughing Through the Blood

I got the shopping cart for Xmas when I was 3 years old. Immediately, I began planning a shopping trip to 7-11. No, not a grocery store. Just as I would later insist as a stoned teenager craving a Super Big Gulp and risky nachos, it had to be the goddamn 7-11. The adults informed […]

“I know that mirrors give us a false sense of confidence.” I continued. “The reflection that we see everyday has nothing to do with how others see us. The glass lies.”
Rasmenia Massoud, Human Detritus

“Who’s happy? Happy is just what people think they are when they can’t find anything to bitch about.”
Rasmenia Massoud, Human Detritus

“Hate isn’t the opposite of love, apathy is. Hating doesn’t free you from feeling anything. You have to carry it around, using every scar, every little memory like a building block. Like a stone in a wall, until you’ve created a new person, a new life that you can live with.”
Rasmenia Massoud, Broken Abroad

“Writing about the unholy is one way of writing about what is sacred. ”
Clive Barker

“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night

“Many people need desperately to receive this message: 'I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Timequake

“And Lot's wife, of course, was told not to look back where all those people and their homes had been. But she did look back, and I love her for that, because it was so human. So she was turned into a pillar of salt. So it goes.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five

“Say what you will about the sweet miracle of unquestioning faith, I consider a capacity for it terrifying and absolutely vile.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night

Jesse Hanson Dear Rasmenia,
I'm glad you added me as a friend here on Goodreads. I see we enjoy some of the same writers. Here's wishing you a good year and much success with Human Detritus. And if you get a chance, I hope you'll take a look at my spiritual fiction allegory, Song of George: Portrait of an Unlikely Holy Man. Namaste, jesse
