Reading from infancy. Writing stories since I could hold a pencil. Always fascinated by the power of words to entertain, illuminate, transform, educate, and influence. Stories are fundamental to our psyche: we love them. It's an honour to be privileged to tell my own versions of tales that have abounded for millennia.
Fantasy fascinates me: that ability to enter an imagined world and witness events not always shackled by Earthen rules.
Science Fiction allows speculation on our future: what will happen if we carry on in certain directions, and what will occur if we allow developments that might actually threaten our very existence?
Romance is fundamental to human relationships and love, with its opposite, hate, form the roots of most stories.

As a writer, I can go anywhere, in any time, as any person (including animals or even non-sentient objects). I can experience, in imagination and via empathy, every known emotion. I can commit any crime you can name, and I can perform every good deed, every form of excitement, every wonder known, and all from the safety of my seat at the desk. Of course, this form of vicarious experience is demanding and sometimes exhausting, but it is limited only by my own imagination.

As a reader, most of the created worlds have either fallen into the dystopian category or have held some form of threat, so are uninviting as places to visit!
So, as self-serving as it will undoubtedly seem to many, my only answer would have to be the island of Muhnilahm at the conclusion of my fantasy trilogy, A Seared Sky.
There, I'd enjoy the tranquility that has descended after the trials and battles, living in one of the coastal villages and meeting up with Aklon, Tumalind, Shoarhn, and Okkyntalah to relive their fantastic adventures with them. I'd also take a trip across the Shylna Sea to the wondrous city of Litkala, where I'd especially love to meet the mysterious and gifted Ivdulon.
In creating the story, I 'lived' with these characters for so long that I feel for them as friends. Whilst we come from vastly differing societies and times, I feel I understand their world very well; certainly well enough to enjoy living there.
I've visited many other worlds on my trips through the millions of pages I've read and it would be unrepresentative of the pleasure, entertainment, fascination, and joy these many lands have gifted me, so I'll resist selecting just one.(less)

Stuart Aken Currently so busy with the WIP that I'm finding less time to read, so no reviews recently. But I should finish the final editing by the end of the month and I'll be back to the normal output then.

message 35: by Stuart

Stuart Aken I have been less active in both writing and reading recently, due to moving house. So much has needed doing to leave the old bungalow and move into the new home, that I have had to neglect my loves for a while. But things are now settling down and the house is more our home, so I shall be slowly getting back to 'normal', whatever that may be! Thank you all for your patience.

Just finished the final re-reading of book one of my fantasy trilogy. Book two is edited and ready for a re-read before I start to write book 3, hopefully next week. Now all I have to do is either find a publisher or consider self-publishing. How goes it with you, Zoe?
