I'm thinking that one of the reasons this book has low-ish ratings is because it paints a rather unflattering portrait of psychiatric care. But Victorian-era psychiatric care WAS fucked up. People could go on tours of asylums as if they were zoos, to laugh at and mock the patients. The treatments were often worse than the disease. People should not be penalized for portraying history as it was. That's how you learn.
