High frequency and large bandwidth are growing trends in communication radio-frequency devices. The LiNbO3 thin film material is expected to become the preferred piezoelectric material for high coupling resonators in the 5G frequency band due to its ultra-high piezoelectric coefficient and low loss characteristics. The main mode of laterally excited bulk acoustic wave resonators (XBAR) have an ultra-high sound velocity, which enables high-frequency applications. However, the interference of spurious modes is one of the main reasons hindering the widespread application of XBAR. In this paper, a Z-cut LiNbO3 thin film-based XBAR with arc-shaped electrodes is presented. We investigate the electric field distribution of the XBAR, while the irregular boundary of the arc-shaped electrodes affects the electric field between the existing interdigital transducers (IDTs). The mode shapes and impedance response of the XBAR with arc-shaped electrodes and the XBARs with traditional IDTs are compared in this work. The fabricated XBAR on a 350 nm Z-cut LiNbO3 thin film with arc-shaped electrodes operating at over 5 GHz achieves a high effective electromechanical coupling coefficient of 29.8% and the spurious modes are well suppressed. This work promotes an XBAR with an optimized electrode design to further achieve the desired performance. Full article

The primary objective of modal identification for variable thickness quartz plates is to ascertain their dominant operating mode, which is essential for examining the vibration of beveled quartz resonators. These beveled resonators are plate structures with varying thicknesses. While the beveling process mitigates some spurious modes, it still presents challenges for modal identification. In this work, we introduce a modal identification technique based on the energy method. When a plate with variable thickness is in a resonant state of thickness–shear vibration, the proportions of strain energy and kinetic energy associated with the thickness–shear mode in the total energy reach their peak values. Near this frequency, their proportions are the highest, aiding in identifying the dominant mode. Our research was based on the Mindlin plate theory, and appropriate modal truncation were conducted by retaining three modes for the coupled vibration analysis. The governing equation of the coupled vibration was solved for eigenvalue problem, and the modal energy proportions were calculated based on the determined modal displacement and frequency. Finally, we computed the eigenvalue problems at different beveling time, as well as the modal energies associated with each mode. By calculating the energy proportions, we could clearly identify the dominant mode at each frequency. Our proposed method can effectively assist engineers in identifying vibration modes, facilitating the design and optimization of variable thickness quartz resonators for sensing applications. Electromagnetic waves propagating in a layered superconductor with arbitrary momentum, with respect to the main crystallographic directions, exhibit an unavoidable mixing between longitudinal and transverse degrees of freedom. Here we show that this basic physical mechanism explains the emergence of a well-defined absorption peak in the in-plane optical conductivity when light propagates at small tilting angles relative to the stacking direction in layered cuprates. More specifically, we show that this peak, often interpreted as a spurious leakage of the c-axis Josephson plasmon, is instead a signature of the true longitudinal plasma mode occurring at larger momenta. By combining a classical approach based on Maxwell’s equations with a full quantum derivation of the plasma modes based on modeling the superconducting phase degrees of freedom, we provide an analytical expression for the absorption peak as a function of the tilting angle and light polarization. We suggest that an all-optical measurement in tilted geometry can be used as an alternative way to access plasma-wave dispersion, usually measured by means of large-momenta scattering techniques like resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) or electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). A new compact wideband filter is introduced to address the requirements of recent communication and radar systems. The filter is based on a quarter-wavelength short-circuit coupled stepped impedance resonator (SIR). The analytical solution shows that the suggested SIR resonator provides a compact size and a wide stopband response, which are essential features in many wireless communication systems. The analytical results also reveal that increasing the impedance ratio of the SIR extends the stopband by increasing the first spurious response and reducing its total length. A compact two-coupled short-circuit SIR filter is designed at 1.23 GHz. The design approach is validated using an ideal transmission line modeling analysis and electromagnetic simulation using CST Microwave Studio 2021. The proposed structure is shown to be flexible, allowing the achievement of a relative bandwidth as low as 5% and as high as 50%. A four-resonator filter is designed by cascading two stages of the designed two-coupled short-circuit SIR filter, which are coupled through a quarter-wavelength line. The simulation results illustrate that the suggested structure can be used to design a filter with any number of resonators. The filter is implemented using a high-resolution LPKF laser machine on Rogers RT/duroid 6010.2LM material with a thickness of 0.635 mm. From the measurements, the bandwidth is found to be 390 MHz and centered at 1325 MHz (29.4% relative bandwidth) and the insertion loss is 1.3 dB. The simulation and experimental results verify the proposed approach and indicate the potential of this component in meeting the design requirements of next-generation microwave circuits related to flexibility and size-compactness. The piezoelectric thin film composed of single-crystal lithium niobate (LiNbO3) exhibits a remarkably high electromechanical coupling coefficient and minimal intrinsic losses, making it an optimal material for fabricating bulk acoustic wave resonators. However, contemporary first-order antisymmetric (A1) Lamb mode resonators based on LiNbO3 thin films face specific challenges, such as inadequate mechanical stability, limited power capacity, and the presence of multiple spurious modes, which restrict their applicability in a broader context. In this paper, we present an innovative design for A1 Lamb mode resonators that incorporates a support-pillar structure. Integration of support pillars enables the dissipation of spurious wave energy to the substrate, effectively mitigating unwanted spurious modes. Additionally, this novel approach involves anchoring the piezoelectric thin film to a supportive framework, consequently enhancing mechanical stability while simultaneously improving the heat dissipation capabilities of the core. To ensure that surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters fulfill the requirements of Carrier Aggregation (CA) applications, the development of modeling tools that can forecast and simulate high-frequency spurious responses has been necessary. This paper presents an advanced methodology for extending the coupling-of-modes (COM) model to obtain precise modeling of the high-frequency spurious responses of incredible high-performance surface acoustic wave (I.H.P. SAW) devices. The extended COM (ECOM) model is derived by modifying the conventional COM model and extending it accordingly. The parameters used in this model are determined through numerical fitting. For validation, firstly, the ECOM model is applied to a one-port synchronous I.H.P. SAW resonator, and the simulation and measurement results match. Then, the structural parameters of the ECOM model are varied, and the accuracy of the model after the structural parameters are varied is verified. It is demonstrated that this model can be applied to the design work of SAW filters. Finally, the ECOM model is applied to the design of the I.H.P. SAW filter based on a 42°YX-LiTaO3 (LT)/SiO2/AlN/Si structure. By using this method, the I.H.P. SAW filter’s high-frequency spurious response can be predicted more accurately. Full article

SAW devices with a multi-layered piezoelectric substrate have excellent performance due to advantages such as a high quality factor, Q, low loss insertion, large bandwidth, etc. Prior to manufacturing, a comprehensive analysis and proper design are essential to evaluating the device’s key performance indicators, including the Bode Q value, bandwidth, and transverse mode suppression. This study explored the performance of SAW resonators employing a 42°Y-X LiTaO3 (LT) thin-plate-based multi-layered piezoelectric substrate. The thicknesses for each layer of the 42°Y-X LT/SiO2/poly-Si/Si substrate were optimized according to the index of phase velocity, Bode Q value, and bandwidth. The effect of the device structure parameters on the dispersion curve and slowness curve was studied, and a flat slowness curve was found to be favorable for transverse mode suppression. In addition, the design of the dummy configuration was also optimized for the suppression of spurious waves. Based on the optimized design, a one-port resonator on the 42°Y-X LT/SiO2/poly-Si/Si substrate was fabricated. The simulation results and measurements are presented and compared, which provides guidelines for the design of new types of SAW devices configured with complex structures. Full article

Surface acoustic wave resonators are widely applied in electronics, communication, and other engineering fields. However, the spurious modes generally present in resonators can cause deterioration in device performance. Therefore, this paper proposes a hexagonal weighted structure to suppress them. With the construction of a finite element resonator model, the parameters of the interdigital transducer (IDT) and the area of the dummy finger weighting are determined. The spurious waves are confined within the dummy finger area, whereas the main mode is less affected by this structure. To verify the suppression effect of the simulation, resonators with conventional and hexagonal weighted structures are fabricated using the micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) process. After the S-parameter test of the prepared resonators, the hexagonal weighted resonators achieve a high level of spurious mode suppression. Their properties are superior to those of the conventional structure, with a higher Q value (10,406), a higher minimum return loss (25.7 dB), and a lower ratio of peak sidelobe (19%). This work provides a feasible solution for the design of SAW resonators to suppress spurious modes. Full article

In this work, a longitudinally excited shear-wave resonator (YBAR) based on single-crystalline lithium tantalate (LiTaO3, LT) thin film is proposed. The YBAR has a 200 nm X-cut thin film and molybdenum electrode. A high effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (k2eff) of up to 19% for the suspension-type structure was obtained. Furthermore, a Bragg reflector (SiO2/Pt) with optimized layer thickness ratio was employed to improve the performance of the YBAR. Compared to the acoustic wave resonators with the conventional quarter-wave (λ/4) Bragg reflector, the proposed YBAR with an optimized Bragg reflector can reflect both the longitudinal and shear waves efficiently, and resonators with spurious-free response and high quality (Q) value were achieved. This work provides a potential solution to enabling high coupling micro-acoustic resonators with high Q factor in the 5G/6G communication system. Full article

Lateral modes are responsible for the in-band spurious resonances that appear on BAW resonators, degrading the in-band filter response. In this work, a fast computational method based on the transmission line matrix (TLM) method is employed to model the lateral resonances of BAW resonators. Using the precomputed dispersion curves of Lamb waves and an equivalent characteristic impedance for the TE1 mode, a network of transmission lines is used to calculate the magnitude of field distributions on the electrodes. These characteristics are specific to the stack layer configuration. The model’s implementation is based on nodal Y matrices, from which particle displacement profiles are coupled to the electric domain via piezoelectric constitutive relations. Consequently, the input impedance of the resonator is obtained. The model exhibits strong agreement with FEM simulations of FBARs and SMRs, and with measurements of several SMRs. The proposed model can provide accurate predictions of resonator input impedance, which is around 200 times faster than conventional FEM. Full article

This paper studied the impact of the microstructure of interdigital electrodes on the performance of surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators and proposed an innovative piston, dummy finger and tilt (PDT) structure, which was then applied to the GLONASS L3 band filters. Through the adoption of 3D finite element simulation (FEM), photolithography, and testing on an incredible high-performance surface acoustic wave (I.H.P. SAW) substrate, it is concluded that the total aperture length is 20T (T is period), resulting in a more optimal resonator performance; changing the width and length of the piston can suppress transverse modes spurious, but it does not enhance impedance ratio; to further improve the quality of the SAW resonator, the proposed PDT structure has been experimentally proven to not only effectively suppress transverse modes spurious but also possess a high impedance ratio. By utilizing a PDT structure within a “T + π” topology circuit, we successfully designed and manufactured a GLONASS L3 band filter with a bandwidth of 8 MHz and an insertion loss of 3.73 dB. The design of these resonators and filters can be applied to the construction of SAW filters in similar frequency bands such as BeiDou B2 band or GPS L2/L5 band. Full article

Despite the dominance of bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filters in the high-frequency market due to their superior performance and compatible integration process, the advent of the 5G era brings up new challenges to meet the ever-growing demands on high-frequency and large bandwidth. Al1-xScxN piezoelectric films with high Sc concentration are particularly desirable to achieve an increased electromechanical coupling (Kt2) for BAW resonators and also a larger bandwidth for filters. In this paper, we designed and fabricated the Al1-xScxN-based BAW resonators with Sc concentrations as high as 30%. The symmetry of the resonance region, border frame structure and thickness ratio of the piezoelectric stack are thoroughly examined for lateral modes suppression and resonant performance optimization. Benefiting from the 30% Sc doping, the fabricated BAW resonators demonstrate a large effective electromechanical coupling (Keff2) of 17.8% at 4.75 GHz parallel resonant frequency. Moreover, the temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF) of the device is obtained as −22.9 ppm/°C, indicating reasonable temperature stability. Our results show that BAW resonators based on highly doped Al1-xScxN piezoelectric film have great potential for high-frequency and large bandwidth applications. Full article

This paper proposes a method to realize ideal lithium niobate (LiNbO3) A1 resonators. By introducing subwavelength through-holes between the interdigital transducer (IDT) electrodes on the LiNbO3 surface, all unfavorable spurious modes of the resonators can be suppressed completely. It is convenient and valid for various IDT electrode parameters and different LiNbO3 thicknesses. Also, this method does not require additional device fabrication steps. At the same time, these through-holes can greatly reduce the suspended area of the LiNbO3 thin film, thus significantly improving the design flexibility, compactness, mechanical stability, temperature stability, and power tolerance of the resonators (and subsequent filters). It is expected to become an important means to promote the practical application of LiNbO3 A1 filters and even all Lamb waves filters. Full article
