Work Integrated Learning

Gain valuable work experience during your NAIT program

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is a form of experiential learning that integrates academic studies with relevant work-based experiences, directly tied to the curriculum and part of an approved program of study.

WIL at NAIT offers  unique and valuable  educational opportunities, such as  the development of learning outcomes that lead to employability, the assessment of learning outcomes, purposeful reflection, an engaged partnership between the institution, the student, and a host-organization, and a meaningful, supervised experience.

Types of WIL Placements

At NAIT, there are several types of WIL placements. These experiences may differ in length, pre-requisites and an assortment of both paid and unpaid experiences. Some of these experiences are mandatory and are required for industry accreditations, and some are optional as an opportunity to gain industry experience and practice program outcomes.

Co-op

A Co-op provides experience in a workplace setting related to the student's field of study. The number of required work terms varies by program; however, the time spent in work terms must be at least 30% of the time spent in academic study for programs over 2 years in length, and 25% of time for programs 2 years and shorter in length.

Clinical Placement

A Clinical Placement involves work experience under the supervision of an experienced registered or licensed professional (e.g. preceptor) in any discipline that requires practice-based work experience for professional licensure or certification. Practica are generally unpaid and the work is done in a supervised setting.

Field Placement

A Field Placement provides students with an intensive part-time or short-term hands-on practical experience in a setting relevant to their subject of study. Field placements may not require supervision of a registered or licensed professional and the completed hours are not required for professional certification.

Mandatory Professional Practices

Mandatory Professional Practices include work hours needed to obtain a license to practice or a professional designation or to register with a regulatory college/professional association.
