Bangladesh vs Afghanistan ODI World Cup 2023 HIGHLIGHTS: Bangladesh next face England on October 10 in Dharamsala after registering a 6-wicket win over Afghanistan.
New Delhi: A superlative batting display by Mehidy Hasan Mirza and Najmal Hossain Shanto and a splendid bowling show by skipper Shakib Al Hasan helped Bangladesh register an easy 6-wicket victory over Afghanistan in their opening match of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Dharamsala. Chasing 157, Bangladesh eased to the target in just 34.4 overs. Shanto played a knock of 59 not out off 83 balls, which was laced with 3 fours and a six while Mehidy Hasan scored 57 runs off 73 balls.
Litton Das made 13 runs while Tanzid Hasan was just run out for just 5. For Afghanistan, Naveen-ul-Haq (1/31) and Fazalhaq Farooqi (1/19) and Azmatullah Omarzai (1/9) took a wicket each.
First Innings
Earlier, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan bowled a splendid spell as Afghanistan were bundled out for 156 runs in 37.2 overs. Shakib took 3 wickets for just 30 runs. After being sent into bat first, Afghanistan were well-placed at 47/1 and 112/2 but Shakib’s spell and Mehidy Hasan Mirza’s 3 for 25 led to a collapse as the Afghans lost their last 8 wickets for just 44 runs.
Apart from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz (47 off 62 balls), none other Afghanistan batter was able to convert their small scores into larger ones. Ibrahim Zadran (22), Rahmat (18), Shahidi (18) and Azmatullah (22) failed in coverting their starts and succumbed against a superlative Bangladesh bowling attack.
With this easy victory, Bangladesh have boosted their morale ahead of the next crucial clash against England on October 10 at the same venue. Meanwhile, Afghanistan will have to do a bit of homework on what worked and what did not before their next match against hosts India on October 11 in Delhi.
