The 15 Best Non-Canon ‘My Hero Academia’ Characters, Ranked
Vote up your favorite non-canon MHA characters.
My Hero Academia is an exciting shonen anime with tons of memorable characters. Not all of those characters are canon - meaning, not all of them originally appeared in the manga. These anime-only characters might not have sprung from the mind of Kohei Horikoshi, but some of them are still pretty cool.
Some of the characters we've highlighted are the strongest non-canon My Hero Academia characters, including major movie villains like Wolfram and Flect Turn. Others aren't especially strong but have unique talents and personalities that make them worth following - Melissa Shield and Rody Soul being two great examples. Which non-canon MHA character is your favorite?
- 1
Rody Soul
Rody is a good kid who works hard to take care of his younger brother and sister - but because he has no other choice, he does this through criminal means. He's extremely cagey and cautious of others, so it's tough for him to warm up to Izuku when they first meet.
Though he likes to keep his emotions to himself, they're obvious because of his quirk, Soul. His soul manifests as a little bird named Pino who reflects his actual emotions, regardless of what he says.
- 2
Sirius
Sirius is Selkie's sidekick. Though she looks up to her captain, she's also kind of embarrassed by his attempts to look adorable.
Her quirk, Good Ear, allows her to pick up high frequencies and quiet sounds over long distances. This is useful for communicating with Selkie without the use of radio equipment.
- 3
Melissa Shield
Melissa Shield is an American teenager and the daughter of David Shield. She's a kind, intelligent person with a positive outlook on life. Like Izuku, she doesn't have a quirk, but she doesn't let that get her down. Instead, she focuses on inventing support items for heroes, such as the Full Gauntlet, which she gives to Izuku to help him manage One For All.
- 4
Selkie
Selkie is the world's most adorable hero - okay, not really, but that's what he wants you to think. He's constantly trying to make himself seem cute, much to the embarrassment of his fellow heroes. But underneath the running gag, he's actually a very competent hero and captain of the Oki Mariner.
His quirk gives him all of the abilities of a spotted seal, from the power to hold his breath for long periods of time to enhanced physical strength.
- 5
Katsuma Shimano
Katsuma Shimano is a six-year-old boy who is a huge fan of all things hero - he's especially fond of Edgeshot, and shows his fandom by wearing an Edgeshot enamel pin on his bag.
His quirk, Cell Activation, lets him speed up and improve the growth of cells. This can result in rapid healing and increased strength. Unfortunately, it's a tough quirk to use because it quickly drains his stamina.
- 6
Beros
Beros is a total badass, so it's kind of a shame that she's not a canon villain. With her goal of ridding the world of quirks, she would have made a great sidekick for Overhaul. Instead, she works for Flect Turn in an organization called Humarise.
In order to defeat her foes, she uses a quirk called Longbow, which lets her transform her left thumb and pinky finger into an actual archery bow. The arrows shot with this bow are powerful enough to pierce through a car.
- 7
David Shield
While All Might worked as a hero in America, David Shield was his sidekick. Unfortunately, he had a hard time accepting All Might's loss of power, and ended up going to extremes in order to try and restore it.
Specifically, he orchestrated a fake siege on the I-Island tower in order to steal the Quirk Amplification Device, which he hoped to use on his idol. His plan was usurped by actual villains, and he ended up putting everyone - including All Might - in danger. In the end, he was willing to sacrifice himself in order to undo his mistakes.
- 8
Mahoro Shimano
Mahoro is a ten-year-old girl living on Nabu Island. She's extremely protective of her brother ever since their mother passed away. She doesn't really have a good impression of heroes - in fact, she sees them as pretty much useless, and goes out of her way to prove that to her brother by messing with Class 1-A using her Hologram quirk. After seeing them in action, she changes her mind.
- 9
Mr. Smiley
Despite having a quirk that might be considered a bit absurd, Mr. Smiley proves to be an impactful non-canon character in the OVA episode “Laugh! As If You Are in Hell.” His quirk is called Smile, which sends anyone into an uncontrollable laughter once he smiles at them.
Watching Mr. Smiley evade what some fans believe are the most powerful heroes in the series makes him a fun and lovable character. He is an artist at heart and uses his quirk to evade police so he can graffiti his work all over the city. While he might classify more as a criminal and not so much a villain, his backstory and reasoning for breaking the law only adds to why he's one of our favorites.
- 10
Taneo Tokuda
Taneo Tokuda is a journalist who tries to figure out who All Might's successor is. His quirk is perfect for journalism - he can sprout cameras all over his body.
At first, he seems kind of manipulative and creepy in that he's trying to expose something that Izuku very much does not want exposed. But he's actually a nice person - he's admired All Might ever since he saved his father from a burning building, and he really just wanted to meet his successor. He ultimately agrees to keep the whole thing a secret.
- 11
Nine
Despite believing that a just world would prioritize those with high physical strength, Nine actually isn't that strong. His Weather Manipulation quirk is powerful, but it's too much for his body to contain. His cells degraded and he was on the verge of passing away. In order to combat this fate, he donated his body to the League of Villains and had them make surgical modifications on him that would amp up his strength and give him additional quirks.
His obsession with strength despite his own weakness makes him a fairly complex villain.
- 12
Saiko Intelli
During the provisional hero license exam, Class 1-A faces off against Saiko Intelli and her classmates at Seiai Academy. Saiko is immensely proud of her intelligence to the point of being a little bit arrogant about it. Her quirk, IQ, boosts her already high IQ to super-genius levels.
The one drawback is that she can't use logic to predict everything - her quirk doesn't help her manage moves inspired by emotion or spontaneity.
- 13
Flect Turn
Flect Turn's quirk, Reflect, is incredibly dangerous because it's constantly active. Anyone who touches him is going to get hurt. Because of this, he had a very lonely and miserable life.
This led him to believe that quirks could only harm humankind - in fact, they were diseases that needed to be eradicated before they wiped out humankind altogether. Basically, he's kind of like Overhaul except with less time to develop as a character.
- 14
Wolfram
Unlike a lot of villains in the series, Wolfram wants something pretty concrete: money. He's willing to do whatever it takes to get it, including throw his own allies under the bus and take innocent peoples' lives.
While he's definitely not the sort of villain most people root for, he does present the heroes with a major challenge. His original quirk lets him reshape metal to his specifications. He also has another quirk, given to him by All For One, that dramatically increases his muscle mass.
- 15
Romero Fujimi
Romero Fujimi is the main villain of “Training of the Dead,” a non-canon OVA. He's kind of a jerk - he looks down on Class 1-A and has no qualms about saying so. He ends up attacking them with his Zombie Virus quirk, turning most of the class into brainless, super strong monsters. He's not immune to his own quirk, though, and he eventually gets turned into a zombie himself.
Romero is the kind of character that's fun to see get their butt handed to them. But his classmates know that underneath all of the nonsense he actually has a good heart, which makes him slightly less one-dimensional than he might have been otherwise.
