Goals Goal 1 (Medium term) Literacy and numeracy through science To use current events in science and engineering

as a means of developing students literacy and numeracy skills.

Steps to get There - Subscribe to science news magazines in order to keep abreast of current research and discoveries. - Design lectures and related activities for all subjects focusing on interpreting media accounts of current science and engineering events. - Promote scientific inquiry through encouraging students to seek out scientific topics that interest them. This will include periods of guided research where students are given access to media, such as the internet and magazines, and allowed to explore current events in science and engineering. - Undertake professional learning in an effort to promote mental and physical health amongst students and to be able to intervene when mental or physical health situations arise. This professional learning will take the form of self-directed learning as well as training courses such as first aid, CPR, anaphylaxis first aid, and mental health first aid. - Integrate a variety of co-operative learning strategies into my teaching. - Discussions centered around inclusive topics will be encouraged, such as the effects of bullying, the stigma surrounding mental health, issues facing LGTBTS adolescents, and the role emotional manipulation in the media

Goal 2 (Short term) Promoting a safe and caring classroom community To provide a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for all of my students.

Benefits to Students (advantages) - Students will be able to explore topics of interest to them which are relevant and current in the media. While the focus is on science current event, - Students will become more aware of the impact of science in their lives. They will learn how to interpret science related news thereby increasing their scientific literacy. - In order to interpret science news stories and articles, students will read a variety of written forms including discussions and procedures. They will also read graphs and related figures. These skills help to develop literacy and numeracy skills while not existing specifically in the language arts or math disciplines. - Students will be able to focus on subject and skills learning without worrying about their emotional and physical safety. - Students will be encouraged to work in groups, providing them with opportunities to develop their interpersonal skills. - Students will benefit from the validification of a large variety of lifestyle choices and the condoning of bullying behaviour. Potential benefits to students include greater selfesteem, and some strategies to deal with bullies.
