How does your

media product
represent
particular social
groups?

My media product represents the rock music culture. Rock music reaches
both male and female people mostly of a white English or American
ethnicity. Now however rock music reaches a wider range of ethnicities as
the music is becoming more popular. My magazine focused on white British
people because this is my own ethnicity so I would know more about it
than any other. I chose to target both male and female people because
when doing my research the percentages of people listening to rock music
was 48% female and 52% male so there wasnt a lot of difference. Rock
music doesnt really specify towards a particular gender so targeting both
was easy. To make sure my magazine was for both genders I used a female
band. Male people would be interested in a female band as that is what
they would be attracted to and what they would maybe want to read
about. The female band was good for females and this could be someone
they relate to as they are the same gender.
For the age of my target audience I chose older teens and young adults, so
people aged between 16 and 20. I did this because again this is the
category I fall into so I knew more about what this age range would want
rather than what older or younger audiences would prefer. I also
photographed a band which was from this age range because it would be
what my target audience would be related most to.

Rock music tends to see two types of people come from it; Goths and
Emos which are both quite similar. These are two social groups that listen
to rock music and have a similar look to each other. Goths and Emos
stereotypically have dark black dyed hair and wear dark clothes. Most
band t-shirts for rock are normally black which is what these types of
people would be wearing. Goths and Emos tend to wear dark makeup eg
black eye shadow/eyeliner and black lipstick. This is for both female and
male members are these social groups. Rockers like Goths and Emos
sometimes also have face piercings and tattoos which is taken form the
people from the actual rock band.
