ISC at Haileybury
Course Director
The setting
Haileybury has been one of Britains major independent
schools for the last 150 years. It is set in a large and well
maintained site of 500 acres just outside the county
town of Hertford, within easy reach of central London
and the airports.
The school has many fine historic buildings and has
added an impressive collection of new buildings in
recent years, beautifully designed to blend with and
enhance what was already there. Some have won RIBA
(Royal Institute of British Architects) National Awards for
architectural merit.
The sports facilities are exceptional with a large sports
hall, an indoor swimming pool, 8 tennis courts, football
pitches and lots of outdoor playing fields.
The campus is compact with the
dining hall, classrooms and sports
facilities within five minutes walk
of the boarding houses. It is a
particularly safe and secure venue
due to its location and has the
additional benefit of 24 hour on
site security.
All in all, a wonderful place to live
and learn.
About ISC
We are Jill Cutting and Martin
McMahon Course Directors of the
school. We have more than 40 years
experience between us in organising
junior summer schools and we put all
that experience into making the courses
as special as we can.
We are well supported by a team of
loyal and hard working senior staff who
share our values and, with their talent,
experience and enthusiasm, aim to
provide you with the best possible
summer school.
We pride ourselves on having a positive and friendly team of teachers and activity staff who are
professional and fun to be with and as committed as we are to giving each student a memorable
and enjoyable experience.
What we offer
At Haileybury we offer a fully inclusive programme comprising:
Accommodation
The boarding house accommodation is well appointed and comfortable with a variety of different
rooms. Each house is different, with at least one large common room with TV, DVD and music
centre and a fully equipped kitchen in each house. The houses are single sex, though students can
visit each other in the common rooms.
The houses have single and twin rooms for
older students and dormitory or multi-bedded
accommodation for the younger students.
There are ample bathrooms on each floor.
You will share the house with students of
different nationalities and can share a
bedroom if you want to giving you more
opportunities to speak English. There are also
several members of staff in each house to
help you to settle in and ensure you feel at
home.
Bedding is provided and changed once a week. A personal laundry service is provided for a small
charge during the second and third weeks of the course. Towels are not provided so please bring
your own for swimming and showering.
Food
The standard of catering at Haileybury is very high. We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner in the
elegant, wood-pannelled dining hall. There is always a
good variety of meals usually at least 3 different choices
for lunch and dinner including a vegetarian option. For
breakfast we offer a cooked breakfast or cereal, toast etc.
Before going to bed, you can have a light supper in your
boarding house toast or biscuits and a drink.
Activities
When lessons are over, we organise a programme of
sports, arts and crafts, competitions, dance workshops
and games. These all take place on campus and we
expect you to join in these activities every day, spending
time with your new friends and using your English to
communicate with them.
We have very varied and stimulating activities led by
young, energetic staff - join us and see just how much
you can do in English. You can choose the activities you
prefer to do let us know what you like and we will do
our best to organise it.
You will be put into an international team and you can earn points for your team by showing
enthusiasm, good behaviour and effort, both in and out of class. You and your team then compete
for the Project Cup, which is presented at the end of the course.
There is an internet room that is open each morning and
afternoon at set times. There is a small charge for use of the
internet room. Throughout the school there is free wifi for
students from 17.00 18.30 each day.
Excursions
Two or three times a week we organise trips to places of interest in this culturally important part of
England. The excursion programme is designed to help introduce you to our history and culture. We
have a ratio of at least 1 adult to 15 students. On most trips you will also have some free time for
shopping or to explore the area yourself.
We are very lucky to be close to London so we go there at least once a week. There are also
excursions to Cambridge, Hertford, Windsor and St Albans.
You will also have opportunities to visit a variety of other places on Sundays within our optional trips
programme, for which there is an extra charge.
Welfare
The most important thing for us is that you are well cared for and happy while you are with us.
Lessons, trips and activities will all be more enjoyable if you feel comfortable and relaxed. It is also
important that you know we will look after you if you need help.
The office is open from 08.30 22.00 every day and there will be a Head of House and other staff
in your boarding house after that time. If you have any problems, there are plenty of people happy
to help.
If you feel unwell, we have several first-aid trained staff on site and a doctor nearby. We also have
2 hospitals within 20 minutes drive.
Jill and Martin live in the school and you will be given a 24
hour emergency number when you enrol, so you can
contact them any time.
Even though there are lots of things for you to do on
campus, Haileybury remains a very safe and tranquil
environment. We expect you to stay on campus, except
when you go on organised trips, and to follow the school
rules which are there to protect you.
