Stage 1 - Desired Results

Content Standards: Identify, evaluate, and use applications - National Business Standard VII
MN Academic Standards for ELA 9.13.7.7 Translate quantitative or technical information
expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or chart)
Common Core Reading: Common Core Reading Standard #1 Read closely to determine what the
text says explicitly
Student Objectives (outcomes):
Identify and use resources to solve problems using application software
Apply advanced features of applications for productivity
Use the collaborative features of applications to accomplish organizational tasks
Demonstrate the transferability of skills between applications
Students will use skills and application features in Microsoft Excel that were available to them in
Microsoft Word to see how skills transfer between applications.
Use applications to analyze data for making good business decisions
Students will use features that are available in Microsoft Excel that can be used to make good
business decisions. Examples are: formulas, functions, and charts.
Understanding(s)/Goals:

Students will use Microsoft Excel to perform
mathematical computations.
Students will use Microsoft Excel to support
decision-making.

Essential Question(s):
How can I learn to use a new application using
the information that I already know?
How can I use Excel to solve a mathematical
computation (examples: adding, subtracting,
multiplying)?
How can I use Excel to support decision-making
(example: using if function)?

Students will be able to (skills, processes,

thinking, planning):

Students will know (facts, dates, definitions,

rules, people, places):

Compare and contrast (application features)

Demonstrate (the transferability of skills between
applications)
Students will use
skills and application features in
Microsoft Excel that are available in
Microsoft Word to see how skills
transfer between applications.
Use (applications) to analyze (data for making
good business decisions)

Which application features are in Microsoft

Excel that are also available in Microsoft Word.
Why Excel should be used instead of Microsoft
